Week Focus 4 – we are SAFE at assembly.

Our library was bursting at the seams with excited children and parents. The children were fantastic and they interacted extremely well while participating in activities in the classroom. Year 5 Camp

What a fantastic time the year 5 campers had at

Smiths Lakes. I have heard some wonderful tales of

ACADEMIC

CORNER

KL

From Little Things Big Things Grow!

The only thing we are assured of in life is “Change.” From

the beginning of the Kindergarten year to now, KL

students have certainly changed! Our Science unit for

this term is ‘Changes’. We are observing changes in

weather and keeping a record of the daily weather,

recording morning and afternoon weather in their

weather books. We will be planting bean seeds this week

and keeping a seed diary, observing and recording changes

weekly.

Our news topic last week was how the students have

changed and these were some of their comments;

“I have become a lot braver and I am happy to come to

school.”

“I have grown taller and bigger and can now go on the

flying fox.”

“I have become older and taller and can go on the flying

fox and monkey bars.”

“I have learnt to be kind to my friends and have made

lots of new friends at MPS.”

“I have learnt to read and write and learnt how to do my

personal best.”

I have learnt how to be safe at school and not to run on

concrete.”

“I have lost some of my teeth and my big teeth are now

growing.”

“I can count up to 100 and love Maths.”

I have learnt not to watch too much TV and not to eat too

much junk food.”

I have learnt to hold my pencil properly and write my

letters.”

“I can now play handball and know about halves and

numbers.”

I am very impressed with how students in KL have grown

and changed in all areas of their development!

We have also had some changes on the Canteen Oval this

year.

The beautiful carpet of green grass has replaced a

barren, weed ridden play area. It is wonderful to see

students of all ages enjoying and appreciating this area.

Thank you to the P and C for all their hard work and

dedication in creating this oasis!

After discussions with the environmental team, Mrs

Stephens and Malabar Coal, our dream of a Sensory

Garden has come true. A big thank you to Mr Casey, who

spent many hours constructing the garden beds and

paving the area.

This garden is an outdoor learning

area and a place of respite for all

students to enjoy. Children can

be hesitant about approaching

plants, since they’re so often told

not to touch. Sensory gardens

are an exciting place for students

to connect with nature, because they are actually invited

to touch, rub, smell, listen, look and taste when an adult is

leading a tasting session. Students will develop an

awareness of nature and biodiversity, and responsible and

respectful behaviour in garden environments.

KL and some of our “green thumbs” from the garden club

had a busy time planting up the Sensory Garden with our

kind sponsors from Malabar Coal, Mrs Stevens and Mr

Kerrigan. The Sensory Garden has a wide variety of

vegetables, herbs, flowering plants, edible native plants,

strawberries, citrus trees, wind chimes and some fun

artefacts for the students to enjoy.

The garden club members along with other willing

students will take care and nurture this special place that

we are so fortunate to have.

I would like to take this

opportunity to thank

Donna and her team from

Malabar coal for all their

hard work and generosity

in providing our school

with a beautiful

environmental asset.

All the changes that have happened in KL and at MPS

have been amazing!
