IIHR Summary of Activities 2011 1 COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering 100 C. Although I know the researchers at IIHR are unusually gifted and dedicated, I am always amazed at the sheer volume of work they produce. Compiling the annual IIHR Summary of Activities offers the perfect opportunity to pause and take stock of our progress and productivity. I believe this is a constructive exercise — both the process of collecting the data, and the acknowledgement of our researchers’ outstanding efforts. It is my hope that this document will be a valuable and useful historical record of the activities supported by IIHR. The Summary of Activities also allows us to assess our level of success in achieving the institute’s mission and vision. Are we leaders in the field of fluids-related research? Are we providing an interdisciplinary education to nurture the future leaders in our field? Are we advancing knowledge in support of sustainable natural and engineered systems? The work documented on these pages demonstrates the level to which the researchers, staff, and students of IIHR are achieving these goals. It also gives us the chance to look closely and assess any areas where we might need to increase our efforts. It is my belief that these are few, but it is important to regularly make an honest appraisal. Please note that this Summary of Activities is the first to cover a calendar year rather than a fiscal year. We hope this change will simplify the use of this information. Sincerely, Larry J. Dear Friends of IIHR,

It is my great pleasure to share with you this summary of the work and achievements of the faculty, students, and staff of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering in 2011.

Sincerely,

Larry J. Weber Director, IIHR—Hydroscience & EngineeringProfessor, University of Iowa Department of Civil and Environmental EngineeringEdwin B. Green Chair in Hydraulics
