Just like that we are on the last lap or our 2017/18 Rotary year. Great & impactful work has happened across our beloved District. Many projects that are changing what an amazing year that have changed the lives of the communities we live in & those around us.

In June we celebrate the Rotary Fellowships Month. Rotary Fellowships are international groups that share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends around the world, explore a hobby or profession, and enhance your Rotary experience.

When we talk about “Rotary Fellowships”, we actually refer to the groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses and Rotaractors who join together to:

• Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.).

• Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession.

• Make new friends around the world. (as will all who will join us at the Rotary Convention).

• Explore new opportunities for service. (as will all club directors who will be serving the first time or

taking on new roles)

• Have fun and enhance their experience in Rotary. (as we will experience during the spectacular installations planned for this June).

Explore Rotary Fellowships... Interested in a particular subject? Visit the group’s website https://www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/more-fellowships.

Next Month we start our New Rotary Year whose theme is Be the INSPIRATION...

Prepare to share your impact.

As an editorial team we are keen to hear from you & how you are making a difference, no project is too small. Send us the anecdotes of your activities package them in five hundred (500) word articles accompanied by three (3) - five (5) photos of the projects you are doing as a club to Rtn. Joy Mbaabu our District Bulletin Officer.

Thank You for sharing your impact change “Make A Difference - Everyday, though Every Club & How we Impact the communities in every Country we Serve.”

Thank You for Making A Difference.

Yours In Servece,

DISTRICT GOVERNOR

T he month of June is a very emotional month for most leaders in the Rotary world. It is the lat

month in the yearly calendar and it brings out different emotions in all the leaders. Leadership can be very stressful and demanding and for the greatest number, the month June brings with it the promise of great relieve. For others it is a month of sad emotions especially if the score card suggests that you could have achieved more but the time is up. Yet for others it is a month of great celebrations as you realize that you have accomplished way beyond what you imagined possible and that you are indeed a gifted leader.

The beauty about Rotary is that there are many leaders both at club, district, zonal and Rotary International levels. Even ordinary Rotarians have roles and responsibilities to perform like introducing a new member , contributing to the Rotary Foundation etc. At the club level, the leaders range from the President, club officers, club directors, committee members, and all of them have critical roles and targets to meet. This is replicated at the District and other

levels all the way to the Rotary international President. During the month of June, it is

good to evaluate yourself and find out how well you have done in your role. The only luck

you have is that you still have 4 weeks to redeem your legacy and you can still achieve some of your

objectives even on the last day of your term, for example contributing to the Rotary Foundation or even inducting a new member.

In the last quarter of this Rotary year, my clarion call to all leaders and Rotarians has been to ‘finish strong’ by working hard to fulfill and achieve your targets up till and including the last day of June 2018.

In the month of May I was honored and a bit alarmed when I was appointed to serve as the Assistant Rotary Coordinator. This is a zone level appointment and can be seen as a promotion and is indeed an honor to me and the District. Our country chair in Ethiopia Rtn Nebeyu Asheferachew was also appointed as Assistant Rotary Public Image Coordinator. I attended an intensive mandatory training in Harare Zimbabwe joining all other coordinators

from Africa. Kenya is ably represented by PDG Geeta who is the outgoing Coordinator for English speaking Africa and PDG Eric Kimani who is the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for the same region. Carole Kimutai is the outgoing Assistant Coordinator who was replaced by Nebeyu and did attend.

I was slightly alarmed because I was planning to quietly retire after a very active year as District Governor so as to give DGE Jeff time to push his agenda as District Governor. It now looks like my retirement may have to wait for some time as I assist our and other Governors achieve the zonal goals.

The month of June is the Rotary fellowship month. The Rotary fellowship is a Rotary international program that encourages Rotarians to persue their hobbies and passions within the Rotary network. I must admit that this program is not very well adopted here and I will spend some time promoting it this month. While there are many reasons why people join Rotary, I have a friend from India Rtn Ravi who joined Rotary for the simple reason that he could play cricket. That is because the cricket fellowship in India has over 10,000 members and they play cricket regularly and the only criteria to join is you must be a Rotarian. They get international visitors every so often who only come for a game of cricket and they also travel widely for friendly matches.

There are over 50 fellowships and among the fellowships I have reason to believe can be successful here include , Golf, motorcycling, singles, lawyers, cricket among others.

However my first encounter with the fellowship occurred in Nakuru when one Rotarian tourist visited our club and he told us that he belonged to the fellowship of Rotary Magicians. I was very curious to know what this fellowship was all about and I requested him to demonstrate. He invited a Rotarian to volunteer assist in the magic show and Rtn Onono (currently in RC Maseno) volunteered. Onono was given a handkerchief, spread it out and folded it after which balls and other items would come out of it to our great astonishment. They performed several shows. However when the shows ended and Onono went back to his seat, the magician Rotarian recalled Onono to give him some gifts he had brought as a token of his appreciation for volunteering. The gifts turned out to be Onono’s watch, wallet and belt which the magician had stolen right in front of us.

I have attached a list of the fellowships available and I am urging each one of us to consider joining a fellowship soon

I saw the difference that simple wood stoves are making in the lives of women who had been cooking on open fires: They no longer breathe smoke when they cook, they spend less time gathering firewood, and they are using their stoves to start small businesses.

PRESIDENTIALMessageFor 60 years, choosing

a theme has been the privilege, and sometimes the challenge, of each incoming

president. Looking back on those past themes opens a small window into the thinking and the vision of each leader – how they saw Rotary, the place they saw for Rotary in the world, and what they hoped Rotary would achieve.

When my turn came to choose a theme, I did not hesitate. I knew immediately that our theme in 2017-18 would be Rotary: Making a Difference. For me, that small phrase describes not only what we do now, but what we aspire to do. We want to make a difference. We strive to help, to have an impact, to make the world a bit better.

Over the past two years, I have seen so many ways that Rotary is doing just that. In California, after the devastating wildfires last year, I saw Rotarians Making a Difference to those who had lost everything. In Guatemala, I saw the difference that simple wood stoves are making in the lives of women who had been cooking on open fires: They no longer breathe smoke when they cook, they spend less time gathering firewood, and they are using their stoves to start small businesses. In Israel, I visited a Rotary-supported hyperbaric center that is helping brain injury and stroke patients return to healthy, productive lives. In communities around the

world, Rotarians are Making a Difference by resettling refugees, immunizing children, ensuring a safe blood supply, and helping young people learn and thrive.

All over the world, I have been a part of Rotarians’ commitment to planting trees. As this issue of The Rotarian goes to press, we are still awaiting the final count of trees planted, but I am delighted to announce that we have already far surpassed our original goal of 1.2 million trees, one new tree per Rotarian. And, all over the world, Rotary is continuing its advocacy, fundraising, and support for polio eradication. Last year, wild poliovirus caused only 22 cases of paralysis in only two countries. I am confident that soon that number will be zero, and we will begin a new phase in the timeline of eradication: counting down at least three years from the last sign of wild virus to the certification of a polio-free world.

As Juliet and I return home to Australia, we will bring warm memories of the places we have visited, the friends we have made, and the service we have seen. Thank you, all of you, for the tremendous work you are doing, through Rotary: Making a Difference.

8 District Governor | June 2018

June 30th 2018 will mark the end of another Rotary year- what will be your story on The Rotary Foundation?

Will you tell yourself that you intended to do a community project but never really got round to doing it…? Is this not the case about many things in our lives?

Will you tell yourself that you intended to support Rotary’s No. 1 priority to eradicate Polio with $ 10, $ 20, $ 50 or $ 100 but never really got time to do it…?

Will you tell yourself that you intended to support The Rotary Foundation by fulfilling our call for Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) to support The Rotary Foundation at $ 100 but the year ended before you could do so…? That you intended to become a Paul Harris Fellow? That you intended to move one level up the Paul Harris ladder? That you intended to become or fulfil your Paul Harris Society commitment? That you intended to be a Major Donor? That you intended to be a Bequest Society member?

Many Rotarians will give themselves comfort that they intended to but the year ended…..! The year has not ended yet! And truly it does not matter where or when you begin giving!

Many Rotarians have never supported The Rotary Foundation at any level and many are happy to even say that their

Rotary Club is among those that give to the Foundation while a year, two, three and for some, many more- they have never supported even our 30 years fight to eradicate Polio!

Good intentions alone without a firm commitment/action are never good enough for anything in life.

I am convinced beyond doubt that all Rotarians are individually capable of supporting our Rotary Foundation even if it is at $ 10!

This Rotary year we are about to achieve a record for our District where we will have 100% of all Rotary clubs contributing “something” to the Rotary Foundation. Will that “something” include your contribution?

It is not too late!

You can go online on my www.rotary.org/donate or you can Mpesa the Rotary Country Office Mpesa Paybill 542542 & A/C No. 038 015 056 218 10 or in any other way you wish to.

My sincere appeal is that you do not let another year pass you without being counted as one who was part of Rotary Making a Difference!

During the month of May 2018, Rotary Club of Nairobi will carry out the second Kenya Rural Blindness Eradication eye camp for Rotary Year 2017/18 (targeting

another 200 plus cataract surgeries).

During January 2018, over 216 cataract surgeries took place in Kisumu. This was a three day eye camp. Patients were screened and transported from neighboring towns. They were  accommodated, fed and operated thereafter transported safely back to the ir towns. The surgeries were performed at the Kisumu Oginga Odinga Referral hospital with patients from Kericho, Kapsabet, Kisii, Siaya, Ahero and Kisumu. The cataract surgeries were performed by Honorary Rotarian Ophthalmologist Dr Mukesh Joshi

and team. Patients were accommodated at Jalaram School.

The eye surgeries performed have led to the restoration of vision to many beneficiaries and this has in turn enabled them to earn a livelihood and leads to a direct positive impact on their immediate families and community, thus leading to economic empowerment (besides the focus area of disease prevention).

In the past 30 years, over 16,000 free cataract operations have taken place by this program by Rotary Club of Nairobi.

RC Nairobi Has run the Kenya Rural Blindness Eradication Project since1985.

Held under the evening stars at Tulia Village in Kilifi, former Club presidents, District 9212 representatives, and even a Rotarian from

Wisconsin (USA) came to celebrate to Rotary Club of Kilifi’s 20th birthday.

Chartered on 24 May, 1998, and sponsored by Rotary Club of Bahari – Mombasa, Rotary Club of Kilifi has a remarkable history of Service above Self. The founding members knew that their combined knowledge and resources provided a bigger impact on pressing needs in Kilifi County than any of them could accomplish alone.

Signature projects include mHealth, which has now been launched countrywide under the name Kilifi Kids and has multiple partners and funding sources. MHealth is an innovative project that leverages technologies with an aim to improve the delivery of medical care in Kenya, especially in the rural areas.

Kilifi Rotarians are engaged in many service projects including building toilets and improving primary schools in Ganze District, teaching young people about business, literacy programs, deworming, distribution of sanitary towels, blood drives and tree planting.

KESHO Executive Director was the guest speaker at the celebration and noted, “In partnership with other Rotary Clubs in the US and UK, Kilifi Rotarians have raised more than 5.5-million Kenyan shillings and has sponsored 52 deserving young people in their secondary school studies through KESHO”. KESHO is a Kilifi-based charity, registered in the UK that supports deserving children in their studies.

Two new members were inducted into the Club during the gala, which raised funds for the Rotary Foundation as well as the Club’s education kitty. President – elect Charles Kamau and President Rose Kigathi reflected on the Club’s past accomplishments and shared their visions for the Club going forward.

One of most pressing issues in our nation of Kenya today is the availability of quality and affordable medical care. Most people in the lower income cadre find themselves trying to contend with poor health

because of inability to afford the proper health-care services. The public institutions, in many cases, lack in either professional personnel or the drags or both. The health centres are equally ill-equipped. The country has gone through some of the worst strikes in history, with medical doctors absconding duty for over 3 consecutive months, nursers out of hospitals for months and at times lack of various specialists to carryout the required medical examinations, etc.

In an environment like this, it is difficult to imagine the troubles the lower economical class, those who do not have proper medical insurance cover, who are the majority, go through. Mothers and children become even more vulnerable. And this is not something that is going to be properly addressed any time soon by the government.

It is in this regard that there are various organizations of goodwill that organize free medical camps periodically to, at least, try and assist some of these needy population in the society. Rotary Club of Milimani has taken a giant step in organizing a Free Medical Camp annually in an area bordering slams within Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. This helps to address the medical needs of hundreds of patients in a day and give them a chance to meet some specialists.

Most of the patients, being drawn from Mukuru slams in South B, with others coming from as far as Kayole, an estate located about 10km away, were treated from chest infections, stomach, ENTs, eye checkups, dental issues among others, with majority being women and children.

the Rotary Club of Milimani served over 700 patients, on the 24th of March. It took place at St.Catherine’s Primary School, one of the schools that benefit from the sponsorship of this very club, with the recent project being that of the school library commissioned also in the very month of March 2018.

We say a BIG thank you to Rotary Club of Nairobi Utumishi plus all the other Rotarians from various clubs who assisted in one way or the other, with some Rotarian doctors spending a whole day in this selfless service when they could be concentrating in their private practices.

Special gratitudes to our partners who massively supported and made it a huge success including Medanta Africare (providing the triage, optical and dental services), Meditest (bringing triage), CityEye for the eye clinic services including free and subsidized eye glasses, Rockhealth for the selfless provision of pharmaceutical services, KBC channel 1 and The Star Newspaper for covering the event, and all the other partners that we many not have mentioned.

We hope to be able to do this again next year, and even make it bigger. Perhaps in future we shall be able to make it more frequent and be able to develop a follow-up/referral systems. We still make a passionate appeal for all people and organizations of goodwill to come in support of this cause.Vive le vive le Rotary!

in giving guidance and direction to the Board of RCNIA.

On her acceptance speech, PE Lucie stated the Club Theme as Share- Inspire –Connect. She also emphasized that the new Board will encourage innovation and continue to participate in community projects that touch souls. One of key strategies RCNIA is set to adopt to make it lively and build up synergies will be to have scheduled joint club meetings with RC Kitengela, RC Nairobi East and RC Syokimau.

After dinner, there was a raffle and auction session which was well organized and which saw lucky winners walk away with valuable gift items donated by Sponsors as well as club members.

There was also a session which quiz session organized by the Quiz Master which saw every

table participating. The ‘chemsha bongo’ session was very interactive and fun as it had tough questions ranging from Rotary, Environment, Kenyan facts, Sports, and Music. The competitive mood of the crowd was real and which saw the Monster Inc Table emerge number 1 at the challenge. There was a moment of laughter when a table chaired by AG Maina was crowned number 2, having put in a good fight to be number 1. The quiz session was definitely one of the key highlights of the evening and the Club could consider organizing for the same periodically as a strategy for fundraising.

Guests left at their own pleasure as the party went until 3am!!

Congratulations to the new Board of RCNIA and we wish you God’s Blessings.
