From the Chairman… Hello Devon YFC! Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the members, past members and supporters of YFC who have rolled up their sleeves and mucked in to help us in the office whilst we have been short staffed over the last couple of months. Denise and Annabelle have been working hard in the office to keep us on track, but the support from others has been overwhelming! It really has shown what a wonderful community YFC is! Over April we were advertising for a new County Organiser, so hopefully by the time this newsletter is released, we will soon have someone joining us. Thank you to all of those members who have been in contact with me, or attended the extra Members Meeting that we held regarding the motions being proposed at the NFYFC AGM on 12th May. I look forward to attending the meeting, along with a great number of Devon YFC members, to represent our views. The delivery of Rural + continues, and we have now delivered to 24 Clubs with more having a date booked in the dairy. We are right on track to deliver to all Clubs before out County AGM in November, so hopefully we can achieve this. Don’t forget to get in contact with office if you would like to book. I have been lucky enough to deliver to Winkleigh, Withleigh, Cheriton & Tedburn, Okehampton and Buckland Brewer over the past weeks. As always, thank you to FCN for supporting us in the delivery of this. Elsewhere, we had a table of members attend the R.A.B.I Spring Ball and receive a donation from the event to Devon YFC - Thank you R.A.B.I for a great night and donation. I was invited to open Lewdown’s Tractor Run, which saw over 85 tractors on the day take part! And, attend a crazy night at Ivybridge’s Pig Racing... although, much to my disappointment, there were no real pigs! See you soon, Alice Giles County Chairman www.devonyfc.co.uk The Devon Rural Hub, Amory Building, Cheriton Bishop, Exeter EX6 6JH Tel: 01647 24120 Email: [email protected] The Office is open: Mon-Thu 8:30am-4:30pm and Fri 8:30am-1pm Supporting Devon Young Farmers May 2019 | newsletter

Axminster YFCAxminster Young Farmers have once again had a busy few weeks. On Friday 15th March we held our St Patricks Day Disco at Perry Street Club. This was successful with over 150 people attending and made a profit to go towards club funds. Next on the agenda was a very interesting demonstration at Complete Meats, Axminster. We were taught how to make sausages using the traditional method and even got to take home the sausages we made! A massive thank you must go to Shaun for giving up his time. On Sunday 24th March a number of our members took part in the East Devon Stock Judging Day. The members competed in dairy, ram, lamb, beef and pig stock judging and won lots of prizes, well done to those who took part! For the past few weeks members have been extremely busy organising our annual charity big breakfast which took place on Sunday 7th April at Axminster Guildhall. This year we chose to support Devon Air Ambulance and The Farming Community Network. Once again this event was very successful and we cannot thank the community of Axminster, our friends and family for all supporting the event and coming along for a breakfast. A big thank you must also go to all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes and breakfast items towards this event, donations are extremely importing in helping us to raise as much money as possible for our charities. Coming up we have our Easter Bingo on Tuesday 16th April at Cloakham Lawns Axminster, 7.30pm for eyes down at 8pm. There will be lots of prizes to be won as well as a raffle, everyone welcome and we hope to see lots of you! Members are also busy preparing our annual stock show and sale at Exeter Market on Wednesday 24th April where members will be taking dairy, sheep and beef animals, good luck to all members taking part!

Axminster YFCOn Sunday the 5th of May North Molton YFC will be taking on the massive challenge of cycling around the 8 North Devon YFC clubs which span from Blackmore Gate to Chulmleigh. We plan to complete this 90 mile trek in just 1 day starting from the square in North Molton at 6 am and finishing with a homecoming at The Poltimore Inn, North Molton.

Throughout February and March we have been practising as a club every 2 weeks which has been a great bonding exercise for us all and has got all members mixing together. We will be paying a visit to every North Devon club too and encouraging their members to join us for the ride to the next club.

The goal of this challenge is to raise over £2,000 for our 3 very worthy chosen charities which this year are Mind, Exmoor Search & Rescue and Over & Above (Barnstaple Special Care baby unit).

All in all it is looking to be a great day with everyone pitching in from North Molton and lots of North Devon members too! We have set up a Mydonate page (https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/nmyfc) and there is also a Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/299328220756486/?ti=as) too for everyone to track our practises and to keep up with us throughout the day and would be grateful for any support or donations.

Lewdown YFCWe have been busy lately with members taking part in county sports achieving a second in ladies football and third in men’s football. One of our members Becky took part in group member of the year where she won and came 4th at the county round being the youngest by 5 years a massive achievement for the club. We have also had the rural + course and recommend to clubs to do! We had a recent club tour to the Morrison’s distribution centre in Bridgwater with Winkleigh YFC, it was an insight into the scale of food they deal with! Most recently we had our biggest event of the year our tractor run where over 85 tractors attended raising £1250 for charity which is fantastic. We have lots more planned including a tour to the New Holland Basildon plant in May!

AGRI REPORTHello newsletter fans!

On the 16th of April the young farmers were invited by Ross Bailey from Fourcows to join in with a farm walk around Higher West Town farms Lely robots, new cubicle shed and Slurry collector. A talk was done by Roy Eastlake on cow health, management and feeding. A lot of people attended the event and was reported to be very interesting. I big thank you to Helen Bellew for stepping in for me at this event. Coming up we have the Agri Debate at the Devon County Show. The discussion will Be on succession and progression in agriculture. Talking about generational hand overs in family farms and how to progress in agriculture if you don’t inherit a farm. All are welcome to come along and talk about your experience in this topic and add to the discussion in any way. That’s all from me!! Cheery bye,

Matt DarkeAGRI Chairman

SPORTS & SOCIALHi all,

Its been a quiet month on the Devon competitions. However, the sports have been smashing the rest of the West county!!

Congratulations to the mixed netball, Choir and ballroom dancing teams, who all came 1st at SWA, what an amazing effort from everyone that took part. Well done to the men’s football who came 2nd. With such great results it’s no wonder that Devon won the overall sports cup.

By the next newsletter county pool, darts and skittles finals will have been played, so I will be able to update you with the results.

Apologies that there have been limited information regarding the field day, but I will have more details soon. Please find the information on the Devon YFC Facebook page.

Over the next month there is not so much happening on the sports and socials front.

Cheerio for now,

Mark SnellSports and Social Chairman

COMPETITIONSAfter an incredibly successful South West Area, we’ve had yet another busy month of competitions, which has seen a lot more Devon achievement. On the 23rd March we had the Southern England finals in public speaking, where we had teams competing in all three competitions. Congratulations to our intermediate brainstrust team consisting of Katie Ackland, Sophie Pratt, Louise Putt and Tom Maynard who come third. Our junior public speakers Molly Clist, Rachel Stevens and Rose McCombe came a brilliant first place, with Molly and Rose being awarded best speaker and vote of thanks. Finally, our after dinner speaking team which consisted of Jess Gray, Matt Darke, Hannah Rich, Jack Stuart and Rob Hill also came first, with Matt awarded best speaker! Congratulations to all that competed and good luck to the junior public speakers and after dinner speakers at the national finals. On the 24th March we had the Southern England finals of entertainments where we had Cheriton and Tedburn YFC representing the South West alongside a Cornwall county team. We ended up in third place and therefore narrowly missing out on a place at the national finals. This was personally one of my favourite YFC performances to have been involved in and I would like to thank the whole cast, advisory and Richard Tucker for all of their hard work over the past few months, and of course everyone that has supported us along the way! On the 31st March we had a beginner’s stock judging session, with over 30 members who have never taken part in stock judging before in attendance. Thank you to the May family for hosting the event and to Jill Persey, Rachel Scott-Douglas and Matt Crooke for training. The future of stock judging in Devon is certainly looking bright and hopefully clubs and groups can keep up the momentum – if you need any help organising your own training sessions please contact the office. We have busy months coming up in regards to competitions with the show and sale, Devon County Show and field day all currently being organised, so I look forward to seeing members competing across the county in the months to come.

County Office

It has been a busy few months in County Office with all the incredible competitions and exciting opportunities arising. Devon County Show is fast approaching and all arrangements are finally starting to come together. It will be an exciting week with lots going on and from the entries it is lovely to see so many of you getting involved. Head down to the YFC tent and show your support as there is always something happening. The AGRI debate will take place in the morning on the Friday of the show with the topic ‘Succession and Progression in Agriculture’. I am sure this is going to be a very lively debate with some strong views being voiced. We are all really looking forward to the show and showcasing the best of Devon YFC. We are looking forward to a new member of staff joining in the office hopefully in the near future, but would like to say a massive thank you to all of the officers, chairmen and board of management for their support as well as the individual members for bearing with us. We can’t wait to see the future of Devon YFC and look forward to meeting more of you.
