Cabnetware News

Planit has started internal beta testing for the next version of Cabnetware 8.3.

After reviewing many of the feature requests proposed by Cabnetware customers around the world the following features have made the short list and are being tested.

Some of them are:

1) Import Google Sketchup2) Mouse wheel zoom and pan3) Add a cabinet quantity that will carry through to NC Center4) Grain Matching (on individual cabinets)5) Mirror & rotate multi-draw views6) Automatic Text (ability to add room & job information to drawings).7) Custom title blocks

As Version 8.3 moves through the beta testing phases in the coming months we will keep you updated on its progress & eventually its proposed released date.

Prior to V 8.2 any cabinet with a saved Cabinet Cutlist or Multi Cross Section has had the door, end panel and drawer front style locked in with the saved information. Now you can change the Door, or Drawer Front or End Panel to a different style while retaining the changes in the cutist or Multi Cross Section. You can expect the door style as well as the overlaps to change when the door is changed via Cabinet or Section Modify. End Panels will typically change. If you have modified sub panel types or rails, particulary on wainscoting, there may be some changes not accounted for. Be aware of arched top rails to make sure the size is correct for the desired shape. Switching from a Slab to F&P type end panels or wainscoting may not pick up all changes.

4. Undo in multi cross section

The Cabnetworks program now has an Undo and a Save function that have Tool Bar icon controls.

On Friday 25th September at The Airport International in Queanbeyan, Planit held a lunch for local cabinet makers. “Everyone turned up, except the beers” laughed Jamie. That didn’t deter the locals, with over 40 people attending the Airport International at Queanbeyan for lunch, a little networking and a look at Manager, the new Cabinet Vision modules & Version 5 features, the afternoon was a great success.

Orders were placed for updates & upgrades and Jamie has been asked back to Canberra over the coming weeks to spend more time with several companies looking at nesting and Manager.

“The feedback from different companies is, they are all looking at what the next step is for their business and how Planit can help them”, commented Jamie Silver, the Planit representative in Canberra & surrounding areas.

Planit Customers meet at Airlie Beach Qld

More than thirty Planit customers from as far away as Cairns, Toowoomba and Brisbane converged on the Whitsunday’s haven of Airlie Beach on the 7th and 8th of September 2009 for a Business Dinner and Showcase Seminar. All functions and accommodation overlooked the Abel Point Marina with most staying at Peninsula Airlie Beach and sharing some of the best apartments they had ever seen.

Internetit, the Queensland reseller for Planit, created a platform where business owners currently benefiting from Planit software could network, engage in discussions on overall business topics and learn about the release of Cabinet Vision Version 5, Manager Software and BenchEzy for Alphacam.

The formalities started with a welcome and thank you address by Jeff Chapman, followed by a Speed Networking session where all the attendees participated in a 30 second rapid fire “Sales Pitch” of themselves to each other to allow not only for introductions, but also to set the tone for the following days.

This was immediately followed by a Business Dinner. Included as part of this dinner the customers were supplied a list of business questions that they would like to be discussed over dinner, to hear how others handled different business aspects. This list was developed anonymously by the attendees prior to arriving. The discussions were active with many good comments coming out and everyone learnt something new from each other. All participants have been sent all of the answers generated as a record of the different ideas put forward.

The next day was the Showcase of new product and new direction, where the morning was covered by presentations on the three software products on display and the afternoon was opened up to a free technical session on each product. Everyone showed a keen interest in these presentations and they were impressed by the new features that were demonstrated. The technical sessions allowed users to explore areas of the software they do not normally have the time to investigate, accompanied by a lot of note taking.

Planit sponsors CMA Awards

The annual CMA Awards held on Friday 28th August 2009 was a huge success with entertainment provided by Daryl Cotton and Wendy Stapleton.Over the course of the evening there were many awards presented in various categories. Planit customers who were nominated were

The CMA Awards Night is made possible through its sponsors. Planit has been a long term sponsor, and Dean Milligan kindly accepted an appreciation award on our behalf.

As Dean was called up on stage to accept the Plaque, John Blackman (who pulled out some funny gags from the Hey Hey days) & the MC for night, sore a golden opportunity to sledge Dean’s choice of tie, “It was a HFC Members Tie”, laughed Dean.

Congratulations to all our customers who were nominated, finalists & winners!

all sessions were well received with many customers watching from the aisles, as there simply weren’t enough seats. Machine Company Onsrud, also had a small NC Flatbed on the stand this attracted much interest from passers-by as it routed out Planit gaming chips.

In keeping with the ‘Vegas’ theme anyone purchasing from Planit at the show had the opportunity to ‘Roll the Dice’ to see how much discount they would get on their purchase.

Being the first time to Las Vegas for Dean, Graham and Steve it was certainly an eye opener with every night spent visiting a different Casino along ‘The Strip’. Everyone had a great time!

AWFS Las Vegas

In July this year Dean and Graham took the opportunity to attend AWFS in Las Vegas. Given that it was the first trip to the US for Dean and Graham, Steve Cugley thought it would be wise to make a last minute trip across the Pacific to ensure Las Vegas was ready for them!

Whilst there were fewer exhibitors than in previous years, given the impact of the global financial crisis on the US economy, it was still great to see everyone got in the Las Vegas vibe and enjoyed a much earned break.

With business owners and their key staff researching the latest and greatest the show reflected a good turn out.

The Planit Stand was well attended with a mixture of long time customers attending to keep up to date with the latest software developments, along with new customers taking up the specials on offer to become part of the ‘Planit Family’.

The Planit Theater was a very popular section of the stand, during the course of each day there were scheduled demonstrations: Screen to Machine, Cabinet Vision Version 5, Alphacam and Part modeler,

At the lunch break, again overlooking the marina, the business discussions kept flowing.

“The results of this Showcase Seminar have far exceeded our expectations. The networking between customers, the learning that has gone on and the support of the new versions has been tremendous. When customers ask when the next one is, you know that they have benefited from their time.” said Jeff Chapman from Internetit.

New Cabinet Vision Version 5, taking it step by step

Cabinet Vision software from leading supplier Planit has been released in a new range of modules.

The software includes the following modules.

Solid Essential is entry-level software targeted for small companies looking to automate their business.

Solid Standard is the next level up, for those seeking the right combination of automation and value.

Solid Advanced is a more sophisticated design and manufacturing tool that allows you to detail all your jobs, from kitchen cabinets to complex architectural projects.

Solid Ultimate is top of the line software with advanced capabilities that allow you to take full advantage of advanced solid modelling technology.

Screen to Machine Standard is entry level CNC software tool designed for small companies wanting to have a screen to machine connection to their CNC machine.

Screen to Machine Advanced is the next level up, for companies seeking screen to machine connectivity with flexibility & advanced options.

Screen to Machine Ultimate is top of the line CNC software tool that allows you to take advantage of advanced options such as grain matching and much more...

As a business grows, Version 5 of Cabinet Vision allows companies to choose the right level of functionality and price.

Version 5 caters for every customer’s price point. For example, $3,950 for entry level cutlist software & $23,950 for entry level screen to machine software. Other options offer advanced solid modelling technology & screen to machine options with features like grain matching & door manufacturing tools.

“No longer will a business feel that it must wait until it has reached a certain size before investing in woodworking software,” said Louise Clarke, Marketing Manager, Planit Australia.

“Cabinet Vision Version 5 allows you to choose the module that is right for your business. When you need more functionality you simply upgrade to the next module, receiving a full credit towards the upgrade – so you never lose your original investment.

“Having a modular approach to software options, whilst still maintaining product flexibility & functionality is why this option is proving to be the popular choice of today. Modular options mean a company doesn’t have to spend as much money up front, & given the current economy, anything that helps minimise costs or allows a customer to spend money in stages rather than all at once, is going to be a winner.

“Planit is the only cabinet making software provider with a true upgrade path that allows you to grow with the software,” she said.

Cabinet Vision 5 has a system for every level, whether you need:

• Solid Essential• Solid Standard• Solid Advanced• Solid Ultimate• Screen to Machine Standard• Screen to Machine Advanced• Screen to Machine Ultimate

Planit’s Cabinet Vision has been an award-winning software tool for woodworking professionals since 1983. The Cabinet Vision Solid product line is widely recognised throughout the woodworking industry. Its solid modelling technology creates true three-dimensional presentations of the final product on-screen, while simultaneously generating the necessary information for the factory floor.

Planit software is easy to set-up. Based on a simple wizard, it allows you to customise the construction method to the way you build your product.

An operator has total control over cabinet sizes, shape, or any construction to suit the customer’s needs. Colours and textures can be selected for the whole room or for individual cabinets and parts. Lighting and reflections can be controlled to bring these designs to life well before any manufacturing has begun.

Cabinet maker’s bold leap brings “unbelievable” productivity gains

Manny Koum, proprietor of McKinnon Cabinets, had never used a computer before when he made the bold jump into computer-aided design and manufacturing at his Darwin factory.

The workshop had been drawing everything by hand and cutting on a panel saw before installing Planit’s Solid Manufacturing software and a flatbed router.

“We had been going well, but Planit took me along to another cabinet maker and showed me what they were doing. I was sold on the system. Since installing it ourselves, we’ve never looked back,” Manny said.

“I just love it and can’t believe what the program can do. It accommodates any job and makes life so much easier.”

Solid Manufacturing has nesting capabilities that give the best possible material utilisation, while cutting and routing in a single sweep through the machine.

“It can handle 30 jobs at one time – that’s why I love it. And it never goes wrong, once the design is completed,” Manny said.

“It’s a lot faster and you don’t have to worry about the job when it’s been sent to the machine. Everything is done for you.”

As with anything new, Solid Manufacturing required training to familiarise the staff. “I trained another guy first, as I didn’t have the time. Then I learned the program myself and – although I hadn’t used a computer before – got too fast for my own good!”

Manny found that he didn’t need to employ additional workers as his business expanded. “We’re doing more work with the same number of people. It’s unbelievable.”

He estimates that in the three years since installing the Planit program and the flatbed router, his investment has already produced a positive financial return – and more.

“It estimates costs, labour required and materials needed, giving us a dollar figure on the job. We have far more accuracy in quoting.

“Manager also allows us to monitor the progress of a job through the factory. That’s very important to us. We can follow the job continuously and ensure it’s on schedule. Staff can check their own performance,” he said.

The program facilitates on-line scanning of components, using bar codes. The Sellers Room has five scanning stations, with the bar codes holding vital information including the list of duties within the work order.

In the final stages of the production process, Cabinet Vision and Manager work “wonderfully well” with the company’s flatbed router, according to Craig.

“Clients notice the speed of turnaround. Once the drawing is done in Cabinet Vision, we can complete the job in hours with much less manpower required. It’s a fantastic product. There’s no doubt about that.

“A lot of management software is out-of-the-box, but not Manager. We were able to customise it exactly to meet our needs. By changing the way it reports, we expressed our own vision for the product,” he said.

When configuring Manager for accounts and invoicing, Craig wanted the program to have a staff interface, so that operators could access the data themselves instead of going through him.

“As a result of our feedback, the interface was developed for Manager and it was available to us within eight months.”

He noted that there was initially some resistance from staff to adopting something new. “But we highlighted the benefits to them and since then we’ve had a tremendously positive response.”

Craig estimated that the company will see a positive return-on-investment on Manager within about 18 months of implementation – certainly less than two years.

Like The Sellers Room, New Plymouth-based Kitchens Designz needed to systematise a growing business, so installed Manager early in 2009.

NZ cabinet makers race ahead of the adoption curve with purpose-built management software

Well-known as innovators, New Zealanders have been quick to see the benefits of embracing this new technology. The nimble Kiwi approach to change means they are often ahead of the adoption curve seen in other countries.

Manager has its origins 10 years ago when Cairns-based CCW Cabinet Works, now with a staff of 50, was looking for a software program to manage a growing business where every job was different. The company found there was nothing out there for them.

Developing a system from a builders’ estimating package, the company worked out how to broaden it beyond estimating, integrating the software with the company’s CAD and CNC programs. The software eventually became Manager.

A recent adopter of Manager in New Zealand is Nelson-based The Sellers Room, a cabinet making company that uses the system to prepare accurate quotes and track all its jobs as they progress through the factory.

Suppling kitchens across the top of the South Island and commercial fitouts nationwide, The Sellers Room has found it “a fantastic product”, according to production manager Craig Temcelly.

The company, which employs 25 people, previously used a number of different enterprise programs including DOS software to prepare quotes and an off-the-shelf accounting package. Manager replaced all these programs.

“We didn’t want to have three products – one each for design, accounts and tendering. We needed an integrated package,” Craig said.

“With Manager working in tandem with Planit’s Cabinet Vision, we have that. Manager is a comprehensive program that can extract design data from Cabinet Vision as well as do all our number crunching.

Manager is an integrated business management tool and control system designed for manufacturers of all sizes.

The program accurately monitors the progress of each job or work order by material, consumption and labour tasks and times, allowing the user to plan and track scheduled start, finish, production release dates and shipping dates.

Its planning function synchronises lead times with work order start times, schedules work orders with job tracking, provides job status and due dates and oversees job status tracking.

Manager easily tracks job profit progress through each job, uses a bar-code scanner facility to capture hours, and offers a range of reports including sales, win/loss, and labour costs on jobs at each work centre.

“It’s given us the capacity for tracking stock, both inwards and outwards. It also prepares our jobs and quotations,” said Dan Holmes, owner of the company that markets customised flat panels and other cabinetry all over the North Island.

Kitchen Designz draws its cabinetry in Planit’s Cabinet Vision, then exports this information into Manager. From there the orders for materials are placed, incoming goods monitored, and the job tracked until it leaves the factory.

“Manager is a complete system that is offering what we need,” Dan said. “I’m hoping for a return-on-investment period of two and a half years.

“Meanwhile Graham Rutter of Planit gives us full support. He’s extremely good at getting back to us.”

Greg Harman Joinery, which serves the Hawkes Bay area, also uses Manager for tracking jobs.

“We know exactly where they are in the factory. As well, the program manages our inventory, telling us for instance how many drawers are available and how many are ordered,” said proprietor Greg Harman. “Bar coding is the next thing that we will bring in.”

He said that Manager benefits the customer by reducing the time taken for quoting to five minutes, as opposed to about an hour before.

While Greg is the sole user of the software system at present, other operators will soon start learning it.

“We had a few problems with other associated software that were holding us up with Manager, but now we’ve sorted those out it’s racing ahead,” he said.

Thames Joinery is another cabinet maker that has professionalised its operations by replacing factory-drawn spreadsheets with Manager.

“We use it for ordering. Once we’ve prepared a quote, we press the keys and it automatically places orders with our suppliers,” said proprietor Bruce Fulton.

“We also do back costing on Manager – how much money we made out of each job. The program is really good and I’d recommend it to anybody.”

Explanation of Codes

For CV or CW customers, the activation of program features and modules are controlled by ‘Codes’. These codes consist of 3 groups of 8 alpha/numerical characters. They are individually coded to match your key burn name and the products you have purchased, this includes versions and ancillary products. Post codes contain 4 alpha characters to provide activation to a machine post. These are matched to the key name and post name. You need a separate post code for each different machine and for each different key name you have.

Codes are issued as Release (permanent), Annual or temporary codes. As a rule, Release codes are only issued for the Master License. Annual Codes are issued for additional keys and Temporary codes are issued during shipping periods and whilst the sales transaction is being finalised. Release or annual codes can’t be issued if there is an outstanding payment or key return pending.

Planit’s policy is to issue the Master License key name as lowercase with the first letter of each word as a capital ie ‘My Best Kitchen’. Additional key names are generally issued all in uppercase ie ‘MY BEST KITCHEN’. Your codes, and this includes post codes where applicable, will always be different between Master and Additional keys, with the same code for all additional keys having the same name.

Planit will always ship goods with 30 day temporary codes for security reasons, with the appropriate release or annual code automatically sent when appropriate. All codes should be stored in a safe place, such as your integration folder supplied from our Services dept, or somewhere where you can retrieve them quickly, if required.

If you have any further questions regarding your codes or how they work, please contact the office.

Insuring Planit Licenses

OAMPS Insurance Brokers was formed in 1976 and was originally Oil Agents Mutual Provident Society. At that time OAMPS sourced a better insurance deal for fuel distributors around Australia and have used that same approach to develop targeted insurance deals to over 100 industry associations, Planit clients are one of the most recent deals they have created.

The insurance deal OAMPS and Planit have put together for our customer’s software and security keys is not only very price competitive but also comprehensive and exclusive to Planit software clients only. Many of you have already experienced difficulty with finding insurance, and when you read the policy wordings carefully you will find that although you can insure software & security keys, you may not be able to claim the full amount following a loss.

With the release of the Planit Security Policy, you will now have peace of mind knowing that you have an insurance policy that was written with guidance from Planit and has been approved by Planit to ensure it meets your needs and will comply with Planit’s requirements when a claim does need to be made.

Over the coming months OAMPS will be sending out CD’s to all our customers which will contain the insurance program, however if you would like to arrange a quote sooner, please don’t hesitate to contact Andrew Clarke of OAMPS on (02) 6953 3000 or email [email protected] and he can email the details to you.

We have done everything we can to ensure it is an easy policy to arrange and understand. To look find out more information on OAMPS visit their website:- www.oamps.com.au.

Associating Appliances with CabinetsIf you have a custom Tall cabinet that you always use for wall ovens. How can you insert a Double Oven so it is associated with that cabinet?

A decorative object can be inserted into another object at the Assembly Editor \ Front Ortho view. This object can then be saved back to the catalog for future use and will always contain that decorative object.

1) Place a Tall cabinet on a Wall and take to the Assembly Editor \ Section view.

3) Go to the Front Ortho view, select the Objects button at the left and go to the Appliances catalog.

4) Select the Appliance you want to use and place it inside the object.

5) Size the Appliance the way you want and return to the Room level \ Elevation view.

6) Right click the object and select Save \ Save As so you can give it a unique name.

7) Save it to the catalog location of your choice with the name you want and it is now ready for all future jobs.

2) Section and size the cabinet the way you want.
