1 Newsletter No. 34 - Term 4Week 4 Thursday 30th October 2014 From the Principal…………. BACK FROM JAPAN After many months of planning the trip to Japan, we have now returned! Just stating that the trip was successful would certainly be an understatement. There are so many aspects of the experience which will form lifelong memories. We enjoyed so many aspects of Japan; the culture, the food, the ease of transport, the countryside and the cities. However, the most enjoyable aspect for the children was staying with the host families and being at Lilyvale Primary School. After four days and nights with the families the children were very sad indeed to leave and the host families were very sad to see them go. There were lots of tears and many promises of seeing each other again. This time with the families gave our children the opportunity to really experience a different lifestyle. Obviously food would have been different, but so too was accommodation, with some families living further away from the school in high-rise units and some families living closer to the school with back yards and play areas. All families were extremely kind and generous. For teachers, we found it extremely interesting to watch classes being taught and to have discussions with teachers and the Principal. When we walked into assembly on the first day we found a very formal way of assembly being taken, and so we presented in a very formal manner. We soon found that the Principal and teachers have wonderful senses of humour and became just as fond of our children as the teachers are at Kalinda. The school was accommodating in every way and shared ideas of education, explanations of culture and plans for the future. With two schools, Kalinda and Warranwood, making the trip together, it means that we can expand on our Japanese programs, incorporating ongoing exchanges of ideas with Lilyvale Primary School. This gives our children an opportunity to share work and collaborative practices with the children at Lilyvale, and also provides a real life experience for our children to use their Japanese language. After we had visited the school we spent time in the Japanese countryside, visiting shrines, waterfalls and admiring the changing autumn scenery. In Tokyo we spent the last full day at Disneyland which was a lot of fun, even on a rainy day. The following day, before we went to the airport in the evening, we visited the wonderful Science Museum. There were many interactive displays for the children to explore and they greatly enjoyed the whole experience. We had to keep rounding them up so we would not be late for the airport but they wanted to see everything and kept asking for more time! I have to thank Lilyvale Primary School for their generosity of time and resources, as well as the host families, who were just wonderful to our children. I also want to acknowledge the time and effort of Cheryl Henry-Wild who organised the travel connections, and Hiromi and Tanya from Warranwood PS who organised the educational program at Lilyvale and the whole tour. It was great travelling with Steve Albon, Principal of Warranwood PS and further consolidated our two schools working together in the future. WHAT NEXT? Many parents have been asking me about next year and a trip to JIRS in India. I can confirm we will be offering a trip to JIRS in August next year. Information for 2015 Level 4 students will go home to families very soon. Our students will stay at JIRS and take part in all aspects of life at this wonderful school. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

JAPAN BRANCH OUT TRIP I have just come back from Japan on the Branch Out trip. Japan was awesome. There were so many amazing things, like Shrines and shopping places. My favourite place that we went to was my host family. We did lots of things together. We played games, went shopping and tried heaps of new foods. I tried okonomiaki which is Japanese pancakes with vegetables, Dragon fruit, some sort of fish and Japanese green tea. Parents say that if you drink the morning tea it will save you from danger. At the shops we bought some yummy foods to try like chocolate lollipops and jellies. We also bought some post cards and rubbers for my friends. Together we played indoor badminton. It was so much fun. Along the trip we all went to Tosyogu Shrine. There we went and saw 520 little Buddhist statues. We all tried to find one that looked like us. I couldn't find one. Jack found one, Cameron found one and many other people but not me :( the photos of this are up on the blog http://kalindabranchout2014.blogspot.com.au By Lucy

I am going to talk about Japan. I'll start with Disneyland first. Disneyland was fun. It had a few rides and parades. It wasn't as big as I expected but it was still decent. The theme park was split into sections: Toontown, Tomorrow land, Critter country, Fantasy land, Adventure and Western. I liked Tomorrow land the best cause it had Space Mountain. Space Mountain is the most popular ride in Disneyland, it takes an hour at minimum to queue up, unless you had a fast pass. I went on it twice, once with a fast pass and once without. You go in the dark really fast with unexpected turns and drops. The other ride I liked was Splash Mountain. You sit in a log and go through a decorated cave. By decorated I mean packed with all these moving animals singing songs. After a few drops and looking around the cave at the animals, there is this one drop that's practically vertical. Your tummy just drops and they take a photo. The food there wasn't bad. There were ice creams, burgers, hot dogs, pizza and more. At the end there were some fireworks that looked pretty cool. We couldn't stay for long because the bus driver was waiting. Now the plane ride. In total (to and from) it took 20 hours. The food on the plane was different, the movies were good but we couldn't watch M, sleeping was a problem and it was so loud. Toilets: Some were built into the ground and some had different spray options, flush options, seat temperature options and games. Host family: One time we went to a sushi train place. One time we went to kendo training. And one time we went to a theme park called Kidzania, which is a place where you can role play over 80 different jobs. I was a pilot, fireman, doctor and security guard. My favourite was fireman, cause you drive in a fire truck, I was in the front with my host sister Nanase; we were making funny announcements so people would get out the way. Once we got to our destination (aka burning to pieces house) we had to put it out with hoses. After that we earned a badge for bravery. School: The school was massive. It had so many things, including a cafeteria which we don't have over here. You didn't get to choose what you want but they changed the meal every day. The food was okay; it would be a 5.5/10. After eating you would have to brush your teeth before you can play. At lunchtime you can play a variety of things like play basketball, dodgeball and badminton, all in the stadium. You could play soccer or tiggy, hide and seek, anything like that. You couldn't bring any of your own stuff to play with though. With classes you have periods, which are different subjects. I spent most classes with my host brother but occasionally went to other classrooms. Best part of Japan was my host family and the most different was the food. By Archer

Kalinda Bands Rock Out at Ainslie Park Festival!

On Saturday 25th October, the Kalinda Senior Wonnies band and the Wonnies Super Band put on a spectacular performance and drew quite a crowd at Ainslie

Park Primary School’s festival.

The bands covered a great selection of songs, including ‘My Hero’ by The Foo Fighters, ‘Hall of fame’ by The Script and ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi.

Congratulations to the band members, Max, Jackson, Koby, Charlotte, Will and

Tom for your contagious energy and confidence on stage. What a great performance!

TRANSITION

During Level Three transition, the Grade Two students with our Grade Three students participated in a variety of learning activities. One activity was to research facts about bees using the Level Three Chromebooks and iPads, which was followed on by a walk through our vegetable garden (where thankfully no bees were to be found!) and finally the Grade Three students demonstrated their knife skills by skilfully slicing carrots, cucumber and celery, which we all enjoyed.

WORKING BEE NEWS Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: Chipperfield, Dong, Herath, Hicks, Kannegiesser, Knox, McCartney, Zhan, Birch and Qi, along with their mini-helpers; Gemma, Harley, Bobby, Ethan, Ava, Jack, Eddie, Alicia and Benjamin. On a beautiful Spring morning, we managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included:

a security light was repaired;

soft-fall was re-spread to priority areas (in all playgrounds) and reclaimed from surrounding areas;

sand-pits were rejuvenated;

timber retaining structures at (all of): the synthetic basketball courts, outside Prep R and surrounding the central playground - continue to be repaired and/or extended;

grass was trimmed around the school’s new mobile soccer goals;

specific, mud-affected areas of the synthetic basketball courts were high-pressure cleaned;

cobwebs were cleared across the school;

specific ground-water drains were cleared;

a damaged panel at the front of the stage was repaired; and…

garden beds at the school’s entrance were weeded.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Bryan Bennett and Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey and Michael Raftopoulos (and Katie)- organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers!

If you have not yet participated in a working bee you are very welcome to attend our last working bee for the year. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other parents and for your children to get together.

THE NEXT WORKING BEE (AND FINAL FOR 2014) IS ON

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 22nd

from 10:00am - 12:00noon. See you there!”

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Week 4 - Term 4 – 2014 (27 – 30 October)

Program Update

Happy Halloween everyone! Kalli has finally returned from her trip away to Western Australia; she had a great time exploring Exmouth, Karijini National Park, and Perth Zoo. She saw many fun and interesting things and will be sharing some stories and photos with us over the coming weeks. As we only have a short school week this week, we have decided to have a small “Halloween party” this Thursday afternoon where children will be decorating biscuits, making art and craft goodies and watching Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. If any children or parents have any other great ideas for our party we would love to hear from you! We will still be operating as normal on Monday next week (day before cup day) and look forward to seeing everyone. For those that are lucky enough to be going away for an extra-long weekend we hope that you have a fun time but above all that you are safe and responsible. Our theme for next week will be “horses” to celebrate the Melbourne Cup and Oakes Day. There will be many horse-themed activities available for children to participate in throughout the week. As the weather begins to improve and become warmer, just a kind reminder to all children to remember their hats at OSHClub; we will provide sunscreen for outdoor activities. Children are more than welcome to bring their own sunscreen if they wish. Kind Regards, Jeanette Lea and Kalli Boag
