Direct from the editor’s desk…

Christmas, did someone say Christmas? It only just seemed like Halloween, oh well; there goes the diet for another year. So what is everyone wishing for this year, and a new microphone, even though one you already have is still perfectly good? Or maybe a new HT, you never can have too many of them, especially since the last one you dropped is in the pool, and it’s never worked quite right since. What ever it might be, I certainly hope that everyone in the club, and their families have a joyous time of year, and what ever appears under the tree, will find a spot somewhere in the basement. After all there must be a spot somewhere that hasn’t been filled yet.

Myself, I have not gotten around to some the things I promised myself I’d do last Christmas. For most of the year, as some of you know, I’ve been looking for a job, now that the doctors said I am

all back to normal, normal being the subjective part of that sentence. As usual I am rambling on again, as I tend to. So lets me get the thing I originally say. I wish everyone in the club a wonderful time of the, how ever you celebrate, you have a safe and fun time, or and oh yes I forgot, hope we all make it through December 21st

73 and enjoy… Valentine Stubbs, VE3VVS. Editor….

The MARC DX Award Update By Ed Spingola, VA3TPV

Photo 1: Michael, VE3TKI

As reported in the September issue of The Amateur, the MARC DX Award is being offered to MARC members who submit a log to the MARC Awards Manager, VA3TPV, during the 2012 – 2013 club year. The MARC DX award is being offered for Mixed,

SSB, CW, and Digital modes and is being issued for 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 DXCC entities.

In the November issue of The Communicator, we reported on the MARC DX Awards received by John, VE3JOC and Asim, VE3XAP/VE3VE. Both John and Asim were active in the CQ WW SSB contest accumulating DXCC Entities.

Not to be out done, Michael, VE3TKI, has submitted an excerpt from his log from the beginning of the Club year. Michael has received the MARC DX Award – Mixed certificate # 2012-003 with 100 DXCC Entities. Michael had a combination of CW and SSB contacts. Good job Michael.

There are many contests throughout the year within which you can make DX contacts. There are of course regular DX openings on the bands. So get DXing and submit your logs.

See the MARC web site under Club Events/MARC Awards for the MARC DX Award rules and entry forms.

http://www.marc.on.ca/marc/events/events_awards.asp

or the September issue of The Amateur for details.

I will accept either a paper log or an ADIF log file if you need some assistance in determining your DXCC entities count.

So get on the air and enjoy this hobby of ours and make some contacts.

73 and Good DX.

Ed, VA3TPV

Radiotron Designer’s Handbook

To the radio designer that grew up in the 1950’s, the Radiotron Designer’s Handbook was the authoritative source of radio receiver design information. Edited by F. Landford-Smith and originally published by Iliffe and Sons Ltd., London, this tome is a comprehensive self-explanatory reference handbook for the benefit of all those interested in the design and application of radio receivers and audio amplifiers. The 4th edition was published in 1953. Subsequent impressions were published by various sources world wide. As a youngster interested in radio, I saved all my nickels and eventually had enough money to purchase a copy of the above handbook. My still pristine 4th Edition was reproduced and distributed by RCA Electronic Components, Harrison, N. J., one of the many companies who subsequently published and distributed this handbook world wide. The skeptic may pronounce that such an old handbook has little relevance in today’s modern world. I for one would disagree with this premise. From the basics of radio design we have forged the modern designs. Knowledge of from whence we came sparks ideas for future designs. The handbook has sections on power supply design, filters, modulation, pre-emphasis, general theory of networks, transformers and iron-cored inductors, rf amplifiers, oscillators, detection and automatic volume control, automatic frequency control, etc. This handbook has much to offer the ham experimenter. You can purchase a hard copy of this handbook on eBay in various media i.e. paper or CD ROM. However, the handbook is also archived on http://archive.org/ A full download is about 92 Mbytes (http://archive.org/details/RadioDesignersHandbook) . This is the one site where you can download the complete handbook in one file. You will be able to find on the internet other sites which allow you to download individual chapters. If you are looking for some older archival material try the above site. You may be surprised at what you can find. There are a lot of interesting books which selfless people have taken the time to digitize and archive. It is amazing what you can find if you dare to search. Enjoy. Ed Spingola, VA3TPV
