From the Executive General Manager, Matthew Watson:

As we shiver through another Canberra winter with our fingers crossedfor a glorious sunny day, it is warming to know that so much is stillhappening both in front of and behind the scenes – definitely nohibernating here for us! Things are really 'ramping up' (pardon thepun), with construction commencing on our new wheelchair accessramp; thanks to financial assistance from a Move It AUS-CommunitySport Infrastructure Grant. It's great to be able to replace our aging, and in places rotten, structure with an all new ramp built from theground up. But it doesn’t stop there! The grant has also allocatedfunding to replace the rear ramp; add wheelchair accessible doors intothe administration building; and new lighting for better safety andsecurity around the building and sensory garden. A big thank you allaround to the Move It AUS – Community Sport Infrastructure programfor the grant allocation; to Adcon for donating their construction time;to Bunnings Fyshwick for the decking; and to Ern Smith Supplies inHume for the specialty hardwood supplies. Please keep in mind yoursafety while this is all happening, and we thank you for your patienceand understanding as the project moves towards completion.

In other wonderful grant news, Pegasus has just been advised that wehave been successful in our application to the Eldon and Anne FooteDonor Advised Fund for new IT upgrades. This will see many of theold desktop computers replaced and the move from onsite serverstorage to the cloud, giving us more secure and flexible data storage.

On the event scene, we've been very lucky to attend some fabulousoutings in the last few months. One of these was the European UnionDelegation to Australia’s Trivia Night in May. Do you fancy yourself atrivia aficionado? All right then, how many countries are currently inthe EU? Not really a question you ponder often, but it was definitely aquestion on the minds of those who attended the Trivia Night. The EUDelegation quiz masters hosted the evening to raise funds for Pegasusas their nominated beneficiary. The Pegasus table held its ownthroughout most of the evening – surprising even ourselves with howmuch we knew (or fluked) about the European Union – and althoughwe did not take away the top prize, a great night was had by all. Thanks to the European Union Delegation to Australia for supportingPegasus and for giving everyone a fun-filled night of brain twisters andtrivia. Oh, and in answer to the question, there are currently 28countries in the EU.

The month of June saw us celebrate the annual Corkhill Bros PegasusCharity Race Day. Now in its third year, the day proved to be anothersuccess with $18,000 raised to support the work Pegasus delivers. With so much happening we can’t go past the moving talk provided

by our very own volunteer, Paul Sloane at the luncheon. There wasn’ta dry eye in the house as he spoke about his own experiences; why hejoined Pegasus; and the moving story of one of our very ownparticipants close to Paul’s heart. The day was also filled with raffles, auctions and the ever-popular fashions on the field.

With the financial year coming to a close, we would like to thankeveryone who donated during our Tax Appeal. This year wehighlighted the story of Pegasus and the work that we do, and onceagain the Canberra community has been very generous with anamazing $57,000 raised so far. Very successful indeed!

Speaking of success, it’s time to get dressed for success, with thenew Pegasus uniforms now available to order. We’ve decided to goback to our traditional design of white on blue, and the new uniformsare available in short sleeve polo and long sleeve soft-shell jacket. Notonly do they look great, but we can now also offer personalisation byadding your name to the front and on the back across the shoulders.Order forms are available at the front office, with orders to be placedat the end of each month.

The next few months for Pegasus will see some more wonderfulevents unfold. Our Horses’ Birthday will be celebrated on Thursday, 1August, and we have the Pegasus Charity Golf Day on Thursday, 26September, with ISPT as the Major Sponsor and Yowani Country ClubCanberra as the Venue Sponsor. Make sure you stay tuned to thewebsite for information about these upcoming events.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of ouramazing volunteers, staff and supporters because without you andyour wonderful efforts and support, we would not be the organisationwe are today.

Matthew Watson.

imagination is encouraged; or is it simply a personal sense of safety, support and inclusion? Whatever ‘IT’ is, Pegasus has it.

Established in 1973 and situated on 100 acres in Holt, Canberra, youquickly see the natural beauty that is Pegasus. With horse paddocksunfolding in front of you and the mountain ranges standing grandly inthe distance, it’s peaceful and filled with the calming sounds of nature. This is the setting where over 1,000 therapeutic horse-facilitatedprogram sessions are delivered every year for over 100 people livingwith a disability in the ACT and local NSW area. From the DayProgram for young adults aged 18 to 25 years living with mental healthissues; to our Mounted (riding) sessions; Hippotherapy sessions(physiotherapy on horseback); School Holiday programs; andUnmounted horsemanship sessions; all of Pegasus’ therapeuticactivities are delivered in our dedicated indoor and outdoor arenas, training rooms, and throughout the natural setting that the farmprovides.

Pegasus is a sanctuary – that special place where everything justmakes sense and magic is afoot. And while the very notion of magiccan be mysterious, fleeting and hard to define, at Pegasus, we knowwhat it is – our magic is tangible. Everyone who walks through thefarm gates feels it; and it’s mirrored in the eyes of our participants andfamily members, volunteers and staff, sponsors and donors, and ourhorses.

Waiting for our participants inside the farm gates, are their friends –their Pegasus horse, their Coach, plenty of welcoming volunteers whowill be their side-walkers and leaders throughout the class, and thefriendly Pegasus staff. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are thebackbone of Pegasus and always embody the fundamental characterand excellence that defines our organisation.

“We pride ourselves on working very closely with parents and familymembers, teachers, carers, therapists, and volunteers to shapepersonal goals; to develop activities specific to each participant’sneed; to expand each participant’s capabilities in an enjoyable and funway; and to celebrate every achievement,” says Janelle Patten, RDACoach and Pegasus Volunteer Coordinator – Programs.

“No achievement is small to the one achieving it, and we celebrateevery accomplishment, every new task tried, every new learning. Thereare plenty of high fives shared during classes for sure, and plenty ofpats for the horse afterwards.”

And speaking of the Pegasus magic, the horse is at the centre of it!The Pegasus horse is the catalyst for the therapeutic benefit of ourhorse-facilitated programs and activities, and is the differencebetween therapy that’s undertaken in a clinical, sterile setting, andtherapy delivered in a social and fun environment.

Our herd of specifically trained Riding for the Disabled horses arepatient and non-judgemental teachers and friends. All of ourparticipants know the name of their horse and what he/she likes interms of treats or grooming – even many years later. The horse may be

Marcus QuinlivanDeveloping Abilities Fund

Ever wanted to give a gift thatkeeps on giving?

Well, that’s exactly whatPegasus supporter andHonorary Life Member, MrMarcus Quinlivan OAM did in2014.

Page 10: From the General Managers · Pegasus and for giving everyone a fun-filled night of brain twisters and trivia. Oh, and in answer to the question, there are currently 28 countries

big, imposing and powerful looking, but it’s also dependable andreliable; quiet and willing; and always wanting to please and be yourfriend.

''Holding the reins, controlling a large animal – it's tremendouslyuplifting,” says Janelle Patten.

“It’s a sense of freedom, and also a sense of being in control. Whenthe child is on their horse, it’s their movements and their voicecommands that help the horse move forward or stop. Even if the childcan’t verbalise their commands, there is communication exchangedthrough touch. For the child to be listened to and understood by alarge, magnificent beast – who they also consider an ally delicatelyencouraging them to try certain things that they may have feared werebeyond reach – that’s a wonderful feeling for a child to experience.”

The horse’s walk stimulates movement in the rider, which aids muscledevelopment and joint mobility. Being on a horse and moving forwardand backward, up and down, and side-to-side, trains entire musclegroups and develops core strength. The horse is also attuned to reading the energy, moods and bodylanguage of each individual. Because of their sensitivity, the horsereacts and responds differently to each rider and can patiently teach awide range of life and coping skills.

“We see the difference the programs make to children, teenagers andyoung adults every day. Physically, riding builds core muscle strength, and improves balance and coordination. Mentally and socially,Pegasus’ unique environment and the bond that develops between therider and their horse helps to improve self-confidence andconsequently, boosts communication, leadership and social skills.Pegasus’ programs bring out these abilities in children living withdisabilities, and enhance them,” says Larissa Witschi, Pegasusvolunteer.

For siblings, parents and family members of someone with a disability,it can be an uncertain and isolating world as well. For family membersand carers, Pegasus provides a sense of community, solace andsupport. A place where they can talk and share stories with other like-minded people who understand their experiences, or a place wherethey can simply sit back, relax and enjoy watching their childinteracting with others and learning new skills.

“I don’t have to worry about my daughter when she’s at Pegasus.Instead, I get to watch her enjoying herself, without needing me to beright there. My daughter has the opportunity to feel like a queen on ahorse! There’s not much else that makes her smile this much,” saysKelly Thomas, mother of Jordan – a Pegasus participant.

It is through our therapeutic horse-facilitated programs that wecontinue to enrich lives, one step at a time and one class at a time. This is why Pegasus exists. This IS the magic of Pegasus. But as withall things, it costs money to provide these life-changing programs.

Pegasus receives no Government funding, so the support anddonations we receive from the general public, community groups and
