What an exciting week it has been at Macarthur as so many of our international links have coincided. The Headmaster of St Michael School in Tanzania, Mr Bernard Mgeni, continues his visit with us. Mr Mgeni has visited many classes and has addressed the whole staff crystallizing for us the needs of his school and enabling us to develop wonderful opportunities for Macarthur children to serve.

This week has also marked the arrival of two teachers, Ms Szilvia Durda and Ms Márta Taskó, from Lévay Józef Református Gimnásium in Miskolc, Hungary. Our relationship with Lévay Józef remains strong and of great benefit to both schools. I do hope Year 9 students are strongly considering an exchange in Hungary in the next academic year. What a wonderful opportunity our students have for experiencing life in one of the oldest centres of Europe.

Japanese students from Nihon University the Third High School have also begun their visit this week. Thank you to the many families who are billeting our Japanese friends and affording them a wonderful cultural experience.

This year Macarthur also has a larger number of students from Asia who have chosen to complete their HSC here. There is no doubt that our students benefit from the many cultural interactions Macarthur has to offer.

How wonderful it was to have a former student, Kevin Yeoh, address Year 11 students this week on the subject of ‘Engaging with Asia’. Kevin was our Vice-Captain in 1996 and has gone on to work in banking and capital investment, focussing in Asia. Kevin was invited by the Prime Minister to attend the 20:20 Summit to give input concerning Australia’s foreign policy. He followed this by publishing an article in the Melbourne Age. How wonderful it is to see how Macarthur’s international focus is bearing such rich fruit!

As I close I want to congratulate the students and staff involved in Oliver! . The production was excellent and the professionalism of the performers, orchestra and backstage crew was commented upon by many in the audiences.

Study tipS

Should students listen to music when studying? In an ideal world we would probably say no music (except classical baroque music which actually can help memory) while students are doing school work. But the following is suggested as a good compromise: If the work is not very difficult, and fairly routine, then students may have on whatever music they like. It will make them feel relaxed and help them stick to completing the work they need to do. However, if the work requires higher order thinking skills, i.e. studying for a test, trying to understand something difficult, doing an essay plan, trying to learn or remember anything – then students should switch off the music or it will end up taking them much longer to complete the task (even though they may be convinced it is not affecting them!).

Students should get into the habit of stopping and asking themselves each time before they start work whether it is the type of work that requires them to really focus and concentrate and if it is – switch the music off for awhile. The same approach goes for doing work in front of the TV. It is also important for students to complete tasks under examination conditions. In this case there should be NO background music! Students might also like to visit the Dealing with Distractions unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au

for some more ideas on dealing with possible distractions from your schoolwork.

In our efforts to be a caring community I would encourage you to pray. Prayer is one of the means God provides by which we can know and experience His goodness and favour. Indeed this much neglected activity of faith is a chosen means by which God blesses his people. Have you ever asked yourself what prayer is? Prayer is simply talking to God - and the most important thing I can say about this is that God wants you to talk to Him! He loves us and He has promised to hear us when we pray.

Prayer is possible because Jesus Christ has removed the barrier between us and God - a barrier caused by our sins. You see, sin separates us from God but by Jesus’ death on the cross, Christ paid the penalty for our sins and removed that barrier. God gives us the privilege of coming into His presence when we commit our lives to Christ. The Bible says,

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

If you have never done so, maybe today you might ask Christ to come into your life.

Understand that God now welcomes you into His presence and promises to hear you - and God cannot lie. The Bible says,

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (1 John 5:14)

Trust His promises and learn to bring every concern to Him in prayer.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss prayer or the Christian faith then do not hesitate to contact me. You can email on [email protected] or call 46 296 225.

From the head oF Junior SchoolThe Winter Term is already looking extremely busy. We have many events and activities planned and only ten weeks to complete them!

north queenSland outreach

The 2008 North Queensland Outreach was an outstanding experience. The students took the opportunity to build relationships with the Aboriginal children of Yarrabah and Hope Vale, and were enthusiastically involved in the learning experiences during the Outreach. They visited St Albans’ Anglican, Yarrabah, Willie Gordon at Hope Vale and the Daintree Rainforest.

The connection between Yarrabah and Macarthur is gaining strength. The hospitality of the church community was overwhelming – the Aboriginal Menmeny Museum was opened especially for us and the students were able to learn of the history of Yarrabah, examine traditional Aboriginal arts and crafts and participate in spear throwing. We were treated to wonderful food and the students really enjoyed eating dugong and turtle. Students were taken on a tour of Yarrabah and came face to

face with the socio-economic reality of the community.

Our visit to Yarrabah was led by Deacon Edward Murgha, who is interested in strengthening the relationship between Macarthur and Yarrabah. Thanks to Mr Harris for his organisation of the Outreach, and to Mr George Shuter and Miss Jacinta Boyton for their tireless efforts in making this venture such a success. Particular recognition must go to the students - Abbey Bamford, Montana Byers, Amy Cooper, Joel Daws, Hannah Ebeling, James Hadjimichael, Melissa Johnson, Taylor Jones, Tayla Kennedy, Nicholas Masjuk, Stuart McIntosh, Mikaela Micallef, Emma Nockles, Jacqueline Robertson, Matthew Smith and Tristan Thorman for their interest, exemplary conduct and effort.

All parents should have received their children’s reports during the holidays. Our Parent/Teacher Interviews, which help to complete the picture parents gain of their children’s learning are being held on Thursday 7 August and Monday 11 August. Please ensure that the slip for appointment times is returned to the school as soon as possible. Interview times will be confirmed by their teacher.

Please remember that while these formal interviews give you the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher, you are most welcome, and encouraged, to make an appointment to speak with your child’s teacher at any time throughout the year.

Term letters for each class were sent home with students last week. These letters outline the curriculum content your children will be studying over the course of the Winter Term.

intercultural immerSion conFerence - Bali, indoneSia2008 – International Year of Languages

Recently, Mrs Gould-Drakeley and Miss F e n t o n attended a stimulating conference in Bali to e n h a n c e t h e i r fluency in

Indonesian and deepen their understanding of Balinese culture.

In addition to attending sessions on Language pedagogy, they participated in a range of language and culture workshops,

visited schools and places of historical and cultural interest and watched dance and music perfor mances. The conference coincided with a Royal Balinese Cremation (the last one was held

in 1979).

Being able to witness this event was an amazing experience and will help the teachers bring to life the Year 8 unit on Balinese Special Occasions. Melissa Gould-Drakeley was also one of the keynote speakers and delegates were impressed by Macarthur’s commitment to Languages education.

This competition, which consisted of six problems which were completed over a three week period in the students’ own time, reflects persistence in mathematical problem solving and also an independent work ethic.

Only the top students in each school are invited to participate and credits were awarded to the top 50% of entrants.

We are very proud of the three students who earned credits in this prestigious competition:

Student outreach in chinaDuring July Elliot Ku was a member of a team of one hundred and fifty people from around the world who visited China to teach English. A new university policy in China states that before any person enters university, he or she has to pass an English conversational test. Less fortunate children from rural areas often do not have to opportunity to learn much English, or even so to speak it. These Christian teachers from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, America, Korea and other countries gathered together to run an English summer camp for these children. Every school has approximately three hundred students and fifty teachers. The camp lasted for two weeks with daily conversation, games, singing, multimedia sessions, concert nights, Olympic games night, boy/girl talks and lots of fun letting the students use more English in their conversations.
