June 2018 FROM THE HELM BY COMMODORE RICHARD BOLTZ I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the help I have received as I transition from Vice Commodore to Commodore. Larry’s shoes have been difficult to fill, but with your help, I can move forward and con- tinue his efforts to make our Club a better place to be. Our April “Opening Day” brought the BYC 21 new members and 8 prior members returning. Please join me in welcoming them to the club If you see someone you don’t know at the Club, please make it a point to welcome them. Coming up in June will be our annual Lobster feed. We have scheduled it for June 16th. This is one of our premier events of the year and will sell out early, so, watch for the sale of the tickets. We’ll send out an email as well as post the ticket sale notice at the Club in the Norton Lounge. The very next day the 17th is Father’s Day. This year we will be having a barbecue. This event will be a “potluck”. Bring your best sides to share. Rumor has it that Mark Connor will be manning the barbecue. We will post the times as we get closer to the date. June 30th the Board is hosting a “New Members Reception”. This reception is not just for the new mem- bers who will be joining us in June. I’d like to extend an invitation to all those new members who have joined this year. It would be great to see our current members join us in welcoming our new members. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know our new members talk to them about their interests and invite them to share our common interest of boats and boating. Going forward……….. In the near future we will begin to repair the North side of the building. I’ll be calling on our members to step up to assist in the project. We already have quite a few members who have stepped up and volun- teered their time, expertise, and $$$ to help get this started. The Elevator Project is once again showing signs of life. We have a small (I stress small) fund that has been set aside for this work. We have a few of our members who are actively pursuing preliminary in- vestigations to the structure of the building and looking at plans for elevator equipment and searching for resources. Don’t be surprised if you see this project resume in a big way. If you have resources, assets or $$$ you are willing to commit to make this happen, please let me know. On another subject altogether…… The Board is considering publishing the Wind Word via Email. A few hard copies would be available in the Club Office. We will be putting notices in the Wind Word for the next couple of months to alert our members of the possibility. Please let the Board know how you feel about the prospect of receiving the Wind Word via email only. Commodore Richard Boltz

FROM THE HELM by Commodore riChard boltz

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the help I have received as I transition from Vice Commodore to Commodore. Larry’s shoes have been difficult to fill, but with your help, I can move forward and con-tinue his efforts to make our Club a better place to be.

This reception is not just for the new mem-bers who will be joining us in June.

We already have quite a few members who have stepped up and volun-teered their time, expertise, and $$$ to help get this started.

The Elevator Project is once again showing signs of life. We have a small (I stress small) fund that has been set aside for this work. We have a few of our members who are actively pursuing preliminary in-vestigations to the structure of the building and looking at plans for elevator equipment and searching for resources. Don’t be surprised if you see this project resume in a big way. If you have resources, assets or $$$ you are willing to commit to make this happen, please let me know.

On another subject altogether……

The Board is considering publishing the Wind Word via Email. A few hard copies would be available in the Club Office. We will be putting notices in the Wind Word for the next couple of months to alert our members of the possibility. Please let the Board know how you feel about the prospect of receiving the Wind Word via email only.

Please update your email addresses with Bob Bowers to receive the Scuttlebutt and Event postings.

We maintain a database of club member e-mails for the purpose of promulgating information concerning upcoming events and other items of interest. Unfortunately, there is a number of current members with either missing or erroneous e-mail addresses who are not receiving this data. Accordingly, we request that anyone not currently receiving our regular information direct a message with their name and e-mail address to [email protected] to ensure their inclusion in our distribution efforts.

Thank You,

Wind Word

As you have read in Commodore Richard Boltz’s article, the BOD will be making a decision about the future of the WW and how you will receive the newsletter. One idea is to post the Wind Word on the website for you to view by visiting the website instead of receiving a copy of the WW each month in the mail. They are thinking of printing a few copies for those that might want to get a copy.

Richard has asked for your input on this idea. Please attend the next Board meeting or contact members of BOD by email (addresses are in the directory, page 2) with your concerns with this decision.

If you would like to send me a comment or idea regarding the WW, please send it to me at the email provided on the directory just inside the cover of the WW.

If there is enough chatter to post, I will create a Letters to the Editor section for the next edition.

WW Editor: Derith Lutz

LOREM IPSUM MAY 29, 2018

BYC CELEBRATES ITS NEW MEMBERS BY KATHY MONROE

BYC has plenty to be proud of in 2018! Thanks to our members’ welcoming attitude, a lot of work put toward a fantastic Opening Day, and the prodigious efforts of the Membership Committee, by June 20 we will have brought in 34 new memberships, 10 reinstatements, and 3 additions to standing memberships this calendar year. That is 84 new individuals, folks who will enjoy our club facilities and activities alongside us, and keep strong our finances and volunteer groups.

On Saturday, June 30, we will celebrate these individuals in the Regatta Room in a two part program. The first part, starting at 4p, will be exclusively for the new and returning members complete with an hors d'oeuvre spread and chit for a free drink of their choice. They will be provided with an overall orientation to the club, and an opportunity to meet the Board members and chairs of the various committees to learn about activities which meet their interests and skills.

The second part of the program, a mixer starting at 5:30, is for EVERYONE, with an expanded hors d'oeuvre selection and a cash bar in the Regatta room. Dinners will be available until 8pm for those interested. Please come on down to this new special event to meet and greet your new BYC FRIENDS!

November 20144

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
