At Durban Girls’ College we believe in the saying that a healthy body means a healthy mind. With the increase in childhood obesity and the related health issues, as well as greater engagement with screens, it would be remiss of us as an educational institution not to do so. Running and skipping, hopping and jumping, swimming and engaging in the variety of team sports on offer help develop body strength and co-ordination.

The sports at DGC are aimed at specific developmental stages and abilities. In the Junior Primary phase exposure to activities and skills are fundamental and the emphasis is on participation hence many activities are fun based.

As the girls progress through the Senior Primary phase and become more competent, honing not only physical skills, they become more aware of skills such as the time management required in busy schedules as well as the values of team activities. While some girls do start to develop preferences, we continue to offer a diverse range of activities. Squads and rotation of players are the norm up until Gr 6 when teams become more settled and healthy competition, both within the team and against the opposition, increases.

By the time they reach High School, the academic workload invariably leads to girls having to make choices and they select one code above another and specialisation increases. Some continue to make themselves available to play in teams, when needed, purely for enjoyment! The Wellness Programme and the Gym on campus allows girls the option of choosing their own activities which are less competitive.

Through sport we learn valuable lessons. Team skills, in an environment when collaboration is stressed as a skill required in the 21st Century, are invaluable. Learning to balance competition and participation is necessary, as an unhealthy focus on winning adds to the stress young people experience today. Just as we learn differently, so too do we progress differently in terms of physical development and strength and we need to remain cognisant of this so we do not develop unrealistic expectations of our girls.

Success and achievement are recognized on many levels. We acknowledge progress from skills development to excellence. Those who excel, commit many hours to their sport, and they deserve the accolades they achieve.

I want to take the opportunity of wishing Amber Schlebusch well as she heads off to the Junior Olympics in Buenos Aires to participate in the Triathalon event. We wish her well and know that she will be a great ambassador for her family, our school and our country. Our Sports Department is currently investigating what we offer, why we do it and how, as well as areas of strength and future development. They are developing a vision for Durban Girls’ College which will include all aspects of sport.

Our girls are ready for their 2018 Interhouse Sports Day.

The Grade 3s enjoyed presenting their favourite recipe to the class this past week. They demonstrated how to make the dish and each girl was given a sample of the treat to taste.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return." 2 Timothy 4:7,8

John Stephen Akhwari, a marathon runner from Tanzania, participated in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Unfortunately, during the race he tripped and was badly injured. But he did not quit. Instead he limped all the way to the stadium where the medals ceremony was already underway for the winners. It was late and dark, and most of the supporters had already left. But as John painfully walked into the stadium, the small crowd watching the medals ceremony roared with admiration at his perseverance and grit, and he was welcomed home with joy. So it is for the Christian journey - it requires perseverance, but in the end the homecoming makes it all worthwhile. Keep running! Michelle Edgecumbe

Meet our Staff

In Grade 12 at Durban Girls’ College, Tanith was a Prefect and Captain of Cross-Country. She also achieved Honours in Athletics and Cross-Country and Merit Colours for Biathalon. In this year’s Comrades Marathon Tanith finished in fourth place with an impressive time of 6h20m35s. Tanith has earned some excellent podium finishes at the Two Oceans, but this was her first attempt at Comrades. Her passion for running came from her parents who competed in 14 Comrades Marathons between them and from her Uncle Kevin Flanagan from who she received her first pair of running shoes at 8 years old. She has been fortunate to compete internationally at the Commonwealth Games 2006, All Africa Games 2007, IAAF World Championship 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and the Olympic Games 2012. Sadly Tanith’s mom passed away from Leukaemia in December 2017. She says her mom was her biggest supporter and always wanted her to run Comrades. Tanith’s ambition is to win both the Two Oceans and Comrades, and she would like to set a new SA Record in the marathon for the 40+ age category.

I started out with a Bachelor in Agriculture from the University of the Free State, but my first love was always sport. During my school years, I played provincial hockey and at university I played for the team and the Free State Provincial Womens’ Teams. After graduation, I spent a few years teaching General Science and Art at the Christian Brothers College in Bloemfontein. This was followed by a move to KwaZulu-Natal to take up an appointment in the Sports Office at Natal Technikon. In 2005, while coaching part-time at Durban Girls’ College, Ken Elliott appointed me Head of the Sports Department and my appointment included my border collie, Skye, who was later followed by Kimba. During my career, I’ve been fortunate to coach some of the top female hockey teams in South Africa, including the KZN U18 (who won the IPT), SA U21 Indoor Hockey, SA U16. I was also the Assistant Coach for the SA Womens' Indoor Hockey Team at the World Cup in Vienna and Leipzig. I’m passionate about coaching sport and it is so rewarding to see our girls achieve in a variety of different sporting codes.

I can really think a champion, is not defined by their wins, but by how they can recover when they fall.
