From the Pastor June 7, 2015 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ [The Solemnity of Corpus Christi] Do these words sound familiar: “Scripture says: from the pierced side of the crucified Christ flowed both blood and water: the source of the Church’s sacramental life?” I certainly hope they do, for these very words were said at every weekend Mass during Eastertime [except on Easter Sunday and Pentecost] to begin the Rite of Sprinkling with Consecrated Easter Water. They also ‘set the stage’ for our weekly celebration of the sacred mysteries - especially the Most Holy Eucharist. For in what was an act of mercy, Roman soldiers either pierced the heart of the crucified to bring a rapid end to their suffering - or broke their legs, causing the crucified to quickly suffocate. But in God’s plan for our redemption, this ordinary act took on extraordinary meaning! Here’s how the Preface for this coming Friday’s Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus explains what it depicted above: Preface: The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus The boundless charity of Christ. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For raised up high on the Cross, he gave himself up for us with a wonderful love and poured out blood and water from his pierced side, the wellspring of the Church’s Sacraments, so that, won over to the open heart of the Savior, all might draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation. And so, with all the Angels and Saints, we praise you, as without end we acclaim: The Boundless Charity of Christ . Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a more ‘modern’ custom of the Church; it ‘began’ with Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1600’s, but ‘spread like wildfire’ after she was canonized in 1920. [As a biblical event, Christ’s spear-opened Sacred Heart has been venerated and reflected on since the start of Christianity!] Many ‘older’ Catholics [like me!] can probably recall the Morning Offering which was based on this Devotion, of which there are many versions, like this one: O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Christ’s Heart: the Ultimate Font & Open Door . Many common expressions deal with the heart: “I don’t have the heart to …” - or “My heart’s not in it…”It broke my heart…” No wonder Christ’s Sacred Heart became the symbol of His great love and concern for us - and the source, font or passage through which we receive so much! Sacramental Source . As I already mentioned, from Christ’s Sacred Heart, torn open by a soldier’s lance, flowed both blood and water: the font of Baptism and Eucharist. From the Pastor June 7, 2015The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

[The Solemnity of Corpus Christi]

Do these words sound familiar: “Scripture says: from the pierced side of the crucified Christ flowed both blood and water: the source of the Church’s sacramental life?” I certainly hope they do, for these very words were said at every weekend Mass during Eastertime [except on Easter Sunday and Pentecost] to begin the Rite of Sprinkling with Consecrated Easter Water. Here’s how the Preface for this coming Friday’s Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus explains what it depicted above:

Preface: The Most Sacred Heart of JesusThe boundless charity of Christ.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,

through Christ our Lord. For raised up high on the Cross, he

gave himself up for us with a wonderful loveand poured out blood and water

from his pierced side, the wellspring of the Church’s Sacraments, so that,

won over to the open heart of the Savior, all might draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.

And so, with all the Angels and Saints,we praise you, as without end we acclaim:

The Boundless Charity of Christ. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a more ‘modern’ custom of the Church; it

‘began’ with Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1600’s, but ‘spread like wildfire’ after she was canonized in 1920. [As a biblical event, Christ’s spear-opened Sacred Heart has been venerated and reflected on since the start of Christianity!] Many ‘older’ Catholics [like me!] can probably recall the Morning Offering which was based on this Devotion, of which there are many versions, like this one: O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month.Christ’s Heart: the Ultimate Font & Open Door. Many common expressions deal with the heart: “I don’t have the heart to …” - or “My heart’s not in it…”It broke my heart…” No wonder Christ’s Sacred Heart became the symbol of His great love and concern for us - and the source, font or passage through which we receive so much! Sacramental Source. As I already mentioned, from Christ’s Sacred Heart, torn open by a soldier’s lance, flowed both blood and water: the font of Baptism and Eucharist. What a joy to know that Jesus has a place in His Sacred Heart for us: a place to be washed and rewashed of sin; a place to be fed and nourished with His own Body and Blood, much as our mothers fed us with their own flesh and blood while we were in their womb; a place where we will find safety and solace, comfort and rest, compassion and strength. And while we may harden our hearts to God, Jesus will NEVER harden or close His Sacred Heart to us: so great is His love for us. While God calls or invites, expects or commands us in many ways, God also gave us the free will to follow our hearts’ desires. How mindboggling to think God willed His Son’s arms be stretched out and nailed in place, revealing His Sacred Heart, which is always wide open to receive the repentant, console the contrite and forgive the fallen. Are you ‘won over’ as this Preface states by the awesome, boundless love Christ has for

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8Moses explained to the people the commandments he had received from God. Upon hearing them, the entire community immediately agreed they would do as God had told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls and sprinkled the people with their blood, calling it the blood of the covenant they had made.Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices, but instead he offered up his own blood to cleanse all people of the transgressions they had committed under the first covenant with God. Christ instead brought a new covenant, which, if kept, would lead to eternal life.Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover supper. During the meal he blessed bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my body.” He then offered them wine and called it his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be poured out on behalf of many.”

The RCIA is intended for: adults who are not baptized, adults who have been baptized into a

non-Catholic denomination, Catholics who have been baptized but

have never received Eucharist or Confirmation.

We extend an invitation now to “Come and see” –-see how Jesus may be calling you, see what the RCIA process entails and how it can make a difference in your life! Christmas. Remember them with a gift mid-year.2. Invite a single friend over for a meal.3. Attend an extra Mass on a weekday this month.4. Abstain from something you like - meat, a latte, a

cold drink - on Fridays and save the money for a charity.

5. Take your rosary with you for an early morning walk.
