From the Pastors Desk - Fifth Sunday of Lent A time to be forgiven. Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son and the loving father presents the true face of God, who with open arms deals with sinners with tenderness and compassion. The parable manifests the infi- nite love of God who enfolds in a close embrace the son who has been found. The path to return home is the path of hope and new life. God always expects us to resume our journey, awaiting us with patience, seeing us when we are still a long way off, running to meet us, embracing us, kissing us, forgiving us. That is how God our Father is. God’s forgiveness cancels the past and regenerates us in love. When God embraces us, God forgives us and for- gets the past. When we convert and let ourselves be reencountered by God, reproach and sternness do not await us, because God saves and welcomes us home again with joy and pre- pares a feast. This fills us with a great hope because there is no sin into which we may have fallen, from which with the grace of God, we cannot rise up again. There is never a person who can’t be recovered. No one is irrecoverable because God never stops wanting our good - even when we sin! When have I most experienced God’s forgiveness and loving mercy? From the Pastors Desk - Fifth Sunday of Lent A time to be forgiven.

Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son and the loving father presents the true face of God, who with open arms deals with sinners with tenderness and compassion. The parable manifests the infi-nite love of God who enfolds in a close embrace the son who has been found. When God embraces us, God forgives us and for-gets the past. When we convert and let ourselves be reencountered by God, reproach and sternness do not await us, because God saves and welcomes us home again with joy and pre-pares a feast.

Read: Luke 15:32. 20 Week Club For the next coming weeks until May 18th, we will be pulling numbers every Saturday of

the winners for the 20 Week Club. 13th winner: #21 Irene Maccagnano. Congratulations and thank you all who participated.

First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 God says not to remember the events from long ago, but to focus on the things he plans to do next. He also claims he will again help his chosen people when they need him. Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14 Paul describes knowledge of Jesus as more important than knowledge of the Old Law. He wishes to share in the power of Jesus' resurrection, and speaks of concentrating on the finish line of the race with salvation as the prize to be won. Gospel: John 8:1-11 Jesus preached forgiveness of sin, but in the old law those accused of adultery were to be stoned. So the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus and brought a woman accused of adultery to him, asking him what he would do to her. Jesus asked that one without sin cast the first stone, and then all of the elders left. Jesus told the wom-an that he did not condemn her, but warned her to avoid such sin in the future. April 13th & 14th Palm Sunday

Reflections The Gospel story of the woman caught in adultery presents us with quite a challenge. Here is someone who has clearly violated the civil and moral laws and deserves the prescribed pun-ishment of being stoned to death. Jesus does not defend the women nor excuse her behavior. He does not say that the people have no right to be outraged and want to punish her. He simply says that the person with no sin should cast the first stone. We need to consider our own sinfulness and how the Lord has dealt with us before passing judgement on others. How might that awareness affect your attitudes toward others?

The Lord has done great things or us; we are glad indeed. -Psalm 126:3

“I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus.” We measure so many things in life under the banner of profit and loss. I look for a bargain, I go out of my way when something is on sale, even when I don’t need it. How shocking it is as I read Paul, as he speaks of rubbish what many consider of great value. Paul teaches us that what really matters is knowledge of Christ Jesus, not just knowing about Him, but having a personal relationship with Him. There is nothing as important as knowing Jesus, His great love for me, and His redeeming sacrifice, as we draw closer to Holy Week. May we make an extra effort to be freed from pos-sessions and be possessed by Him.
