From the PresidentBy Rex Burr
I hope you all enjoyed the long Memorial Day weekend. Itcertainly was a hot one!
On May 8th, representatives from the board and landscapecommittee, along with our arborist, The Care of Trees, andlandscape company, Likes Landscape, performed a walking tour ofthe entrances and berms along Book Road and 104th Street. I amhappy to report that, overall, the plants and trees were found to bein very good condition. Unfortunately, a dozen or so bushes, anda handful of trees, were identified as needing to be replaced. Theboard is now in the process of prioritizing and approving thenecessary work to be done.
Another area of concern centers on significant populations ofshrubs (most notably, Dogwood) that are in need of rejuvenation. In order to maximize the health, foliage and fullness of these plants, they need to be rejuvenated (cut down to the base) every three tofive years. We are working diligently to develop plans that willprotect and promote the long-term health and appearance of theseplants while minimizing any impact (reduction of privacy, etc.) toour homeowners.
On a final note, it became apparent during the walk that a fewhomeowners have taken the liberty of adding plants to the bermalong 104th and Book. While we applaud the good intentions and
initiative, I would like to remind everyone that boardapproval is required for such undertakings. Please do notmake any changes to the berm without first obtaining boardapproval.
Until next time, I wish you all a happy and safe June.

Naf Naf Grill® embraces a very simpleconcept: prepare delicious cuisine fromthe freshest ingredients, while capturingthe essence of culture and tradition.Sahar and Elan, the original founders, opened their first restaurant location onOgden Avenue in Naperville, but soonformed a business partnership with twoother entrepreneurs, David and Justin, whereupon three additional restaurantssprung into existence – with a newChicago location on its way.
Each restaurant’s interior isimmaculately laid-out, imbued with anearthen tone that soothes the senses. Itsorganic concept is made manifestthrough its commitment to recycling, from the reclaimed wood used to makeits large tables to the use of recycledpaper and glass tiles to its high-efficiencyLED lighting system.
The food is displayed in a simple – yetresplendent – configuration, makingyour meal selection a seamless process. You can choose to build your selectionon a plate or in one of their thick, fluffypitas. Tahini sauce and a magnificentlyspicy pepper mix are the typicalaccoutrement, and they trulycomplement each dish. Soups and saladare also available, and they are servedalongside pita bread, tahini, hot peppermix and pickles.
The various iterations of chicken andbeef are freshly cut in-house, and theyare seasoned to perfection. The beeftenderloin is especially moist, with adelicate taste and consistency. There’salso a beef kifta kabab, featuring Angusground beef enhanced with a potpourriof spices and herbs.
You can choose from white or dark meatto build your chicken kabab, or there’sthe famous chicken shawarma, which isthinly sliced from a rotating, vertical spit. For those looking for a unique chickenexperience, you must try the schnitzel, which offers a lean chicken breast coatedin sesame and lightly fried.
For the falafel-lover, there’s a falafelmade with chickpeas and an array ofherbs, molded into a patty and gentlyfried. And the celebrated pita is plump, soft and literally melts in your mouth, right from the oven. Roast eggplant andhummus adorn the menu in abundantfashion.
If you’re in search of exceptionalMediterranean cuisine with a dedicationto the freshest ingredients, hand-madeand served to exact specifications, Ihighly recommend Naf Naf Grill. It’s arich, cultural dining experience that istruly special and one not soon forgotten.

the happy gardenertips for everyone who love to dig
By Heather Prince
Art in the Garden
Add your personal touch to your yardwith a garden accent. A piece of gardenart or a decorative container can create afocal point, add the finishing touch to a
garden room, or just delight the eye. A decorativebench can offer a shady respite or a place to soak inthe sun. At The Growing Place, we’ve found thatrearranging garden art can be a fun and easy way torefresh your space or draw attention to a seasonaldisplay.
Consider placing pieces with complementary colorsnear a plant in full bloom to add even more sparkleto its flowering display. Containers can offer aneasy, colorful way to fill a hole, distract the eye, orcreate a dramatic effect. Theycan be moved out to more sunto encourage betterflowering, or into more shadeif plants are wilting orscorching in the summer heat.A strawberry pot filled withherbs can be ideal next to thekitchen door for easy picking.Creative statuary can giveyou a subtle accent or a boldstatement.
One of the loveliest ways tocreate an intriguing path iswith stepping stones.Express your personalitywith a variety of patterns oreven make them yourself!Plus, stepping stonesencourage us to stay on the
path and off of soft soil that can be easilycompacted. Consider placing stones strategicallyso that you can easily access your beds to weedwithout impacting soil.
Think about adding a vertical element to yourgarden room with trellises, obelisks, and pillars. When covered in perennial or annual vines, theselong-lasting structures can give you some muchneeded height in a small space or even screen adistracting view.
The Growing Place offers a large selection of gardenart including benches, statuary, containers, trellisesand more. Join us for our annual Gardener’s Art
Festival on Saturday, June23 at the Naperville locationon Plank Road. Enjoy a widerange of artists and craftersoffering handmade itemswith a garden theme. At11:00 am, Bill Shores, manager of the Rick BaylessOrganic Garden in Chicago, where he grows saladgreens, herbs and vegetablesfor Rick’s restaurant,Topolobampo will speakabout ‘Gourmet Gardening’.Walt Anderson, local notedphotographer will presenton “Digital GardenPhotography” at 1:00 p.m.C h e c kwww.thegrowingplace.comfor further details.

There are millions ofcats entering sheltersevery year in the U.S.,
and, sadly, only about one ofevery four shelter cats finds anew home. The other three areeuthanized. Why? There aretoo many cats and not enoughadopters. In our local area, there may be 50 catssurrendered to animal controlin one morning – some of themcoming from homes, whileothers are stray. Knowing thatone unspayed female and all ofher offspring can produce up to420,000 cats in seven years, youcan see how the cat populationcan get out of hand quickly. Atprivately-run humane societies,
such as the Naperville AreaHumane Society, that do noteuthanize for cage space, thewaiting list for cats needing tobe surrendered for adoptioncan often exceed six months. When one cat gets adopted, thenext cat on the waiting list iscalled in to take that availablecage space. The average lengthof stay for cats waiting foradoption at the shelter isapproximately four months. Byadopting even one cat, you savemultiple lives: you save the catyou bring home and also themany cats that are waiting forthe cage space at the shelter toopen up for them.
The Naperville Area
Humane Society is desperatelylooking for new homes for themany cats in their care. Tocelebrate Adopt-a-Shelter-CatMonth in June, NAHS isrunning a “Certified Pre-Owned” cat promotion theentire month. They havereduced their adult catadoption fee to only $25, andthe kitten adoption fee isdiscounted to only $100. Thisadoption fee includes spay orneuter surgery, vet exam, vaccinations, microchip, collarand carrier. Please seenapervilleareahumanesociety.org for more details.

Please take a moment to learn about one of the catscurrently available for adoption:Hi there! My name is Tuna. Yes, I know it’s strange thatI am a cat named after a fish, but I am so sweet I wouldanswer to any name you called me. I am a beautiful, four-year-old cat. I was given up by the only family I have everknown due to someone being allergic to me. I am a verysocial and loving cat and would be very happy in a homethat wants lots of cuddle time with their new familymember. I am currently lounging in our free-roam catroom called Kittyland and loving every minute of it. I amone of the first cats to greet the scout tours when they stopby and have enjoyed making new cat friends, likeProfessor Tuesday and Swayze. I would even get alongwith a dog friend. Would you like to be my friend? Hopeyou can stop by soon!To learn more about all the wonderful cats and dogswaiting for adoption please call 630-420-8989 or go towww.napervilleareahumanesociety.org for details.

Do you have any Ashtrees on your property?
If so, you MUST treatyour trees to prevent the
Emerald Ash Borer(EAB) from killing your
ash trees. Pleaseinspect your Ash trees
for EAB.
Signs of infestation include noticeable
woodpecker damage, dieback, splits in
the bark, excessive sprouts, or small
D-shaped holes in the bark. If you
have an ash tree and you don’t treat it,
if WILL definitely die. Please note that
an Ash tree typically will not show
these symptoms of EAB until 2 or 3
years after the tree has been infested.
The adult Emerald Ash Borer emerges
between May and July. The best time
to treat your trees is between mid-April
and June. The insecticides are
typically injected or poured into the
ground around or into the trunk of the
tree. If your Ash tree is greater than 15
inches in diameter, professional
treatment of your tree is
recommended. The insecticides
available to the general public are
intended for use on younger trees.
Ash trees are very common in our
neighborhood. As a good neighbor it
is your responsibility to treat ash trees
on your property (including those in
the area between your sidewalk and
the street).
The signs of EAB infestation have
been identified in a number of
Naperville subdivisions. In addition,
more than 15,200 of the city’s parkway
trees are Ash trees. This is 27% of the
city’s parkway tree inventory. See
http://www.naperville.il.us/eab.aspx for
more information about EAB in
Naperville.
If you don’t know if you have Ash trees
on your property here are a few
guidelines about the characteristics of
Ash trees.
• Ash trees feature compound leaves
made up of small, glossy green
leaflets
• Leaves, twigs and branches grow in
opposite pairs
• Bark of mature ash trees is gray and
furrowed, often appearing in a
diamond pattern
• Some ash trees will produce small
canoe paddle shaped seeds.
If you are uncertain as to whether or
not you have an Ash tree on your
property call an Arborist or bring a
sample leaf to the Morton Arboretum
Plant Clinic. Web sites also provide
additional information about Ash Trees
and EAB.
www.emeraldashborer.infor/index.cfm,
www.emeraldashborer.info/illinoisinfo.
cfm.
Although there currently is no cure for
EAB, scientists currently believe
proper insecticide treatment will
minimize the damage caused by EAB.
For additional information in this
regard please see
www.napervil lehomeowners.com.
The Naperville Homeowners
Confederation sponsored a forum on
Naperville and the EAB in March and
their Web site includes the materials
presented at this forum held at the City
Council Chambers.
At that meeting we were told that if you
wait for the tree to die the cost to
remove a 15” diameter ash tree is
approximately $1,500 (removal, stump
grinding and replacement). Ash trees
become very brittle when they die and
falling branches can damage property
and people. If you personally
remove an ash tree, DO NOT use
the wood as firewood. This only
spreads the disease. The City of
Naperville will continue to remove any
dead trees in the parkway (the grassy
area between the street and sidewalk).
The City requests that you submit an
Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Form
when you treat your Ash trees. You
can also find this form on the City Web
site mentioned above.
Again, if you have Ash trees on your
property, please be a good neighbor
and proactively treat them for EAB.
Our subdivision’s economic value in
part depends on the beauty of the tree
lined streets and backyards. TREAT
