1 Dock Talk is a publication of the Healey Lake Property Owners Association (HLPOA) Stay connected with HLPOA at www.healeylake.org From the President Dan MacLeod The 50 th Regatta was, in my humble opinion, a huge success. Of course, I have received input from many others to substantiate this. Mother Nature came through for us again, giving us a perfect day to celebrate this milestone. In addition Tuggy, the Tugboat made his first appearance at our Regatta and was a hit with parents and children alike. Tuggy spoke to everyone about water safety and safe boating, getting the message across in a playful fun manner. I have invited Tuggy back to next year’s Regatta. The Regatta is not something that just comes together magically; there are many key players and volunteers who come together to make it happen. At this time, I would like to make thank the many people who helped me assemble this year’s regatta. Your cooperation and helpful attitudes made the planning and execution very enjoyable. My sincere thanks goes out to the many companies and people who donated and made our raffle and auction prizes a huge success. August 2/09, on or about 9:00 PM, we were very fortunate. Healey Lakers were presented to a fireworks show that was the other side of spectacular. I thought last years was the best, that title was shattered on that Sunday night. The, Bright Night Shooters, as I like to call them, sent up a light show that had everyone honking horns, whistling, clapping and screaming their approval. All you heard on the lake during Sunday was who was going to “The Show” and how great it was last year. On behalf of the entire crowd that was there, let me take this opportunity to thank you for a fantastic and entertaining night. Upon reading this issue of Dock Talk on www.healeylake.org, you will notice a new look. This website is the nucleus for all news, events and general information concerning our lake. Since the 50 th Anniversary Regatta TShirts were such a hit, we will be selling XL and L shirts at the Semi Annual meeting for $10.00 each. Also concerning the Regatta Tshirts, we are running a contest open to cottagers to submit drawings to commemorate the regatta next year. Submissions are to be received by Thanksgiving Day Oct. 12/09. Criteria includes Healey Lake, Regatta and your imagination. Contestants are invited to scan their creation and email to me; I will submit all entries to the judging committee. The winning design will be unveiled at the Annual meeting in May 2010. In closing, if here are any questions or concerns regarding your Executive, please contact me. Always remember, be aware of your boat wake and please keep the wild animals wild. Regards, Dan MacLeod Cell 4167231999 Mark Your Calendar Now! The West Parry Sound HealthCentre (WPSHC) is  reportingmore than the usual numberof  rattlesnake bites thisseason. Two of these bites resulted from peoplepicking up the snakes, an action that is stronglydiscouraged and totally avoidable.In the June ‘09  issue, Dock Talk  reported on achange in funding  for  the antivenom serum. Thishanged the usual procedure and led to a scramble inensuring  that enough serum was available in theright place at the right time. Bites were reported asfar west in the province as Windsor.

As a result of  the publicity around the rattler andthe serum, many concerned cottagers contactedtheir  MPPs and it looks very much like theseactivists  got action. We’ll keep you informed butearly  indications are that WPSHC is likely to  onceagain become a central depot. This makes it easierto track  the number of bites in the province andalso makes it  possible  for  the WPSHC pharmacistto oversee the supply of antivenom serum.

Letter to the EditorBottle DriveFirst I would like to thank those who donated theirbeer and  liquor bottles to the bottle drive onSaturday July 11.  We collected  $710.90 which wereused for kids regatta prizes.

Many thanks to Bob Barrett for the use of his Barge(which usually rents for $100.00 per hour) andtrailer. Bob himself, Maxine, Rob Harris, John Creen,John Cherepa, Darlene McConnell and Kirsten Coco,and Peter.  Next year we need more volunteers.Rob Harris and I have spent 17 hours this weekendcollecting and sorting the bottles.

RegattaMany thanks for all those who helped set up for theregatta and a special thanks to those who helped inthe Beer Garden.  We made the largest profit yetand all that goes to regatta prizes and awards.

Bear SightingsThere have been many bear  sightings lately and theMNR likes to get reports of bears on your property.If you go to www.mnr.gov.on.ca

Now for my pet beefsThere are numerous people leaving their boats atthe Pine Bay, Back Bay and government landingswhile they go away from the lake to do  things otherthan loading or unloading.  I have seen manyinstances where boats have had to be moved soother people can get to the dock to use it.  Some ofthese people are not even members of the HealeyLake Property Owners Association.  The parkingareas and docking facilities are provided andmaintained by the HLPOA volunteers and yourmembership dues help pay for them.

There are also loading areas at Pine Bay,Government landing and Back Bay designated forbarge loading and numerous times these areblocked by vehicles.  Also on the August 1st weekendthere were so many vehicles parked at Pine Bay that

if  there had been an emergency an ambulancewould not have been able to make it down the road.Since we now live up here permanently, I amgetting a little peeved with people leaving theirgarbage on the ground at the landings.  I have beenpicking  it up and if evidence is found about who itbelongs to, the Township will be notified andappropriate action will be taken.

Fire PumpsIf you have had the need to use one of theAssociation’s fire  pumps, please notify me as soonas you are finished.  People have used them thisyear and have not re‐stored them properly andI have had to clean carberators, replace startingcords, drain gas, unseize impellers etc.  Thesepumps are for emergency use only and it would be ashame if  a fire occurred and someone had returneda pump that didn’t work.Charlie Smith 705‐375‐2380Email [email protected]

The Club thanks Peter Hintze and his staff atMariner's Cove Marina for volunteering their timeto look after the tennis court bookings. Also thanksto Vanessa Hintze, Peter and Susan Arnold, NancySimpson and Dan MacLeod for their support andpast help.

As usual the tennis courts were opened for theVictoria long week‐end in May.  The Healey LakeTennis Club's executive, to encourage and promoteplay on the courts, offered free membership to allpaid up members of the HLPOA at the beginning ofthis summer. This promotion was a greatsuccess. We recorded that 130 families,comprising of 483 individuals, responded to thismembership drive which resulted in more usage ofthe facility in spite of the poor weather that we hadthis summer.

Please note that the courts will be closed after theThanksgiving long week‐end.

Our current year's liability insurance expires onJune 17, 2010 and at this time has an outstandingbalance owing which the members of the tennisclub executive have agreed to personally pay.

As you are most likely aware, the executive of theH.L.T.C. submitted on June 29, 2009, an applicationto The Ontario Trillium Foundation for funds torefurbish our tennis courts. Unfortunately wereceived a letter of denial on September 5, 2009.The tennis courts are still playable and if there is nophysical damage throughout this coming winter,they will be reopened for the Victoria longweek‐end in May of 2010.

As announced during the H.L.P.O Associationmeeting on September 6, 2009 at the Healey  LakeLodge, the current tennis club executive will beresigning their positions as of June 17, 2010 aftermany, many years of service.

To date our appeal for volunteers, in our letter ofFebruary 14, 2009, to step forwarded to help runthe tennis club has not been successful. Regrettablythe tennis courts will be permanently closed onJune 17, 2010, if there are no volunteers to form anew  executive by that time.

We, the executive, sincerely wish that you all have asplendid Fall, a wonderful Christmas and a happyand prosperous New Year.

RoadsAll gravel roads received a lift this year. The HealeyLake Rd. will be ashphalted. Plans are to have thepaving done as early as weather permits in theSpring of next year. This is not a double surfacetreatment as in the past. Because of high volume oftraffic and the size of vehicles using  the road,double surface treatment life was getting shorterand shorter. We have taken advantage of theinfrastructure grants to move the road to the nextlevel.

Tullock Engineering has finished a survey of HealeyLake Road. This will be used for improving a fewspots that are below standard. It will also be thebasis for the tender to be issued at the beginning ofSeptember and for the standard of the work to bedone. Over the next 15 years we will actually savemoney.

WasteWithin the Archipelago, there are now 3 sitesincluding the Healey Lake transfer station that aremanaged and controlled. Six compactor bins are upand running and 26 of the bins have beenordered for next year. The bins are being built toa design that has been modified by Township staff.

The Township now has a lift truck and this hasreduced transportation costs and solved most of theproblems of back‐up on long week‐ends.

Broadband service is allowing us to install a veryefficient camera system at the trasnfer station. Thesite design and infrastructure is underway.

Thank  you to all who have cooperated this year tomake things work. We have improved the hours abit and our data shows an improvement in efficiencyagain this year. With the new equipment in place intime for next year, things should continue toimprove.

Also the new equipment and improvements arebeing paid for by improving efficiencies. We aregetting close to 6 times as much into a compactorbin as the old style. This greatly reducestransportation costs and tipping fees.

Broadband ServiceSystem is up and running with 4 companies offeringservice. Over the Fall, the tower people will betesting for any pockets with poor reception.Cost to install ‐ approximately $200.

The Last Word Nancy Simpson

In some ways it has been a summer of firsts for us.It is  the first time we have had access to high speedInternet. Our little Bell turbo stick has served uswell. It is also the first  time we have spentan almost  uninterrupted month at  the cottage.And it is the first time in 50 years that we have(knowingly) had a visit from a bear.

When I reported this visit to the Ministry of NaturalResources, the official there reminded me thatit takes a whole community to manage living in bearcountry. In other words, it requires that we all  takeextra care to secure the garbage we generate at ourcottage, that we don’t provide any food sources forbears such as the seed in bird feeders, or food leftaround last night’s campfire.

Now  that I come to think about it, this issue of DockTalk is very much about community, about how weall need to cooperate if we are going keep HealeyLake the beautiful place we have come to enjoy.There’s Charlie Smith’s letter about the out ofcontrol parking both in the water and on the land atPine Bay and other landings. In the last issue of DockTalk, there was Linda Taylor’s letter about howsnowmobilers had damaged their new cedar dock.

Then there are the issues around boating.September 15, the deadline to have an operator’scard  has passed but one can’t help but wonder howmuch difference this education is really going  tomake when you consider that there are still  thosewho operate• boats after dark without lights,• wake boats, with little regard  for  the wash

they pummel against the shoreline,• unmuffled boats,• boats operated at excessive speeds.

There are also those who go slow, who plowthrough the water to accommodate inexperiencedskiers and tubers but in doing  so, come so close toshore that their  wake shakes everything  includingboat houses.

Yes, it does take a whole community to managethe bear situation and to keep our Lake a healthyand hospitable sanctuary.  Are we Healey Lakers upto this task?

My thanks to all who submitted information for thisissue of Dock Talk and to Barb Jones for theregatta pictures. There will be one more 2009issue after Thanksgiving  so I will take thisopportunity to wish each of you a Thanksgiving thatis rich with the bounty of  this land, and is sharedwith family and friends.Oh by the way, I am always glad to hear from ourreaders. Until the next time,
