BI-ENNIAL SKI TRIP TO NEW ZEALAND

Forty two students will experience the extreme sports ‘mecca’ of Queenstown in the Southern Alps of New Zealand’s South Island as members of the School’s biennial Ski Trip contingent to New Zealand in the forthcoming holidays. Departing this Friday, 3rd July, students will ski or snowboard at the resorts of The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Cardona whilst also enjoying a number of other activities including Jet Boating, Luging and the renowned Haka. The Tour Leader is Mr. Streeter who is accompanied by Mrs. Norton, Mr. Watkins, Mr. McLean and Mrs. Beveridge. The students return on Sunday, 12th July.

Last year our ski tourists to Thredbo were fortunate to experience some of the best ski conditions for decades. This year it appears our New Zealand tourists will be equally lucky. Southern New Zealand has experienced record low temperatures over the last week and already there is a one metre base of snow for everyone to look forward to.

BRAVO TO THE SCHOOL’S MUSICIANS

I was delighted to recently receive the following letter from the President of the Quinns Rock RSL Sub-Branch, thanking our students for their contribution to the Centenary ANZAC Day Service.

PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS LIGHTNING CARNIVAL

I liked Lightning Carnival a lot. It was really fun! I liked how they

did not keep score, so it did not matter if you won or lost. It did

not rain so that was great, but Ms. Shimmings said that, ‘Sport

is more fun in the rain!’

One of the things I really liked was that I knew nothing about

Netball at the start, then after a lot of training I felt like I had

been playing for a few years. On the day of the Lightning Carnival, I was really nervous,

but I loved the entire day. Even though I am not really a big fan of sport, I would happily

compete in a Lightning Carnival again.

Casey Garces, 6.1

On 12th June, everyone arrived at school with their sports things and snacks ready to

get on the bus and to go to the Lightning Carnival. It was not the warmest morning and

was actually pretty cold. All of the boys’ soccer teams were waiting to get on the bus. We were obviously last to get on

because Mr. Senior was late, as usual! We eventually got on the bus and I started talking to some Year 9 kids (Umpires)

whilst everyone was singing at the back of the bus. It was a great atmosphere.

We finally arrived at Kingsway Reserve and we all put our boots and shin pads on. All of us walked over to hear what the

organiser wanted to say. After that, we collected our drinks and went to our pitch. Mr. Senior told us which positions

we had on the team. We lined up for a tough match against Quinns Baptist College. We went one nil up, with Spencer

Patten scoring, then a second goal through James Chanthivong.

At the end of the day, we had won 4 games, lost 2 and drew 1. The goal scorers on day were Spencer Patten - 4, Matthew

Barrett - 2, Ted Dann - 2, William Muntz - 1, and James Chanthivong - 1. All of us had a great time playing. We want to

thank Mr. Senior for organising this event. I am sure everyone had a great time.

CAREERS Year 10 Work Experience

Congratulations on completing your week of work experience. It is great to hear some of the positive feedback from your supervisors.

I hope you managed to thank them for letting you complete you work experience at their organisation. If you have not done so already, you should have asked for feedback, using the review sheet at the back of the log book. Once completed and signed by your supervisor you should save this with your resume as evidence for future reference.

Year 11/12 Workplace Learning

By now you should have completed 110hours. Therefore I should have received 2 log books, 2 reviews and set 1 & 2 questions completed in your Skills journal. Can you please hand these in ASAP once signed by your supervisor.

ST GEORGE’S ART EXHIBITION

Each year three Senior School students are selected to take

part in the annual St George’s Art exhibition housed within

the beautiful of St George’s Cathedral.

The exhibition showcases the work of students from across

the State and is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain

recognition for their work outside of the school surrounds

while also being able to view their work along-side their

peers.

This year Peter Moyes ACS is represented by Paige Hurihan-

ganui (Year 11 ATAR Visual Arts), Tamika Walker (Year 12

General Visual Arts) and Cara Robertson (Year 12 ATAR Visual

Arts).

The exhibition will be formally opened on Thursday 23rd July,

6.30pm-8.00pm, by Dr Stefano Carboni, Artistic Director of

the Art Gallery of WA during the official awards night.

Additionally, it is open to the general public from Saturday

18th July to Sunday 26th July 10.00am to 4.00pm daily.

CONNECT, LEARN, ENGAGE – Dr Justin Coulson Last Thursday evening our third Connect, Learn, Engage seminar for 2015 was held. This time Dr Justin Coulson PhD, a respected speaker on parenting, author, researcher and founder of ‘Happy Families’ spoke to parents about the three essential keys to raising happy children in his seminar titled ‘What your child needs from you.’

These three essential keys are: Being emotionally available for your children; Understanding that chil-dren need to be understood; and Discipline – Teaching Children Good Ways to Act.

Justin encouraged us to stop being so busy and start paying attention to our children, by just being there for them. He presented some interesting research by Andrew Fuller on resilience and how vital it is for children to feel that they have a parent who cares for them and who listens to them.

The next key was about understanding our children’s needs. He explained the importance of ‘turning towards’ our children’s emotions, rather than turning away or turning against them. His research showed that children’s needs usually relate to being hungry, angry, lonely, tired, stressed or sick.

The final key to raising happy children was discipline, through teaching children good ways to act. He said that happy families set limits, have boundaries and clear expectations. Justin suggested three simple strategies: instructing, giving guidance and teaching. You could do this by providing your children with gentle reminders (use eye contact and don’t raise your voice); in-ducting them by modelling how to behave and showing them what to do (be clear, explicit, it will take time to learn) and finally through questioning. When your child breaks a rule, ask him/her what the rules are? Why do we have rules? How do people feel when we break the rules?

Justin concluded by reminding us that parenting is all about the small moments and challenged us to find the ‘sliver of gold’ in every moment.

A copy of Justin’s book ‘What your child needs from you’ is available for loan from the P&F library.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT Dear Friends, Clinical psychologist, Andrew Fuller, has just published a book called Raising Real People that looks at the qualities of healthy families for teens. These are his eight factors for building a healthy family. 1. Spontaneity and curiosity. Children need to see parents having fun, being

spontaneous and making mistakes and getting over them. 2. Degree of emotional independence that allows people to be loved and differ-

ent. People in high functioning families are allowed to be different and are loved for those differences.

3. Clear family structure. Families do not work well as democracies. In fact they seem to work well as benevolent dictatorships in which the parent/s consult a lot with their children, but at the end of the day the parent has the final say.

4. Teach the skills of self-esteem. Families that work well seem to praise one another a lot. 5. Know how to argue. The family is really where we learn to fight fair. 6. Maintain family rituals. Families who preserve family rituals such as birthdays and anniversaries seem to

‘teflon coat’ themselves against some of the hardships of life. 7. See the world clearly and accept all their own feelings. Families that function well seem to be able to accept

that we all have imperfections. 8. High level of emotional support from a transcendent value system enables them to cope. Parents need to

keep their children and themselves interested in the outside world. Whether it be religious, spiritual, ecological or some other cause, families that thrive seem to draw strength and meaning from beliefs that put the wider world and domestic life in perspective.

The School community of PMACS seeks to follow many of these principles.

Best wishes
