A special Year 12 Farewell Assembly will be held on Friday 29 th October, at the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre (CCSLC), 9:15am. Under the current restrictions the school must adhere to CCSLC’s COVID-19 Safety Plan as per SA Health guidelines, which for this venue is currently a maximum capacity of 242 people - 1 per 4 square metre rule. At this stage, each Year 12 student is invited to bring two guests only. To ensure crowd numbers do not exceed the COVID-19 venue capacity restrictions, every individual attending, including Year 12 students, must order a free ticket online. These details have been emailed and posted to students and their families. I look forward to seeing Year 12s and their guests to celebrate students’ education achievements and milestones, as well as meeting families at the various transition information sessions this term. From the Principal: Alistair Williams Welcome back to school. Term 4 is traditionally a busy nine weeks as we continue learning, begin preschool and sub school transitions, celebrate the end of year, and for our Year 12’s finish their secondary education. During the school holidays it was great to see many Year 12s take the opportunity to meet with their teacher for revision tasks. It can be both a stressful and anxious time, coupled with excitement and celebrations. Time management is my advice to students and families, with time put aside for rest and relaxation. This too can be problematic, especially for those who also have part-time jobs. Year 12 is an exciting time as students start to face the reality of adulthood, managing a multitude of responsibilities and taking ownership of their decisions and futures. I wish our oldest students well as they embark on the last three weeks of completing assessments, revising for exams, sitting their final exams, and for many start a new job, traineeship or apprenticeship with local businesses.

A special Year 12 Farewell Assembly will be held on Friday 29th October, at the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre (CCSLC), 9:15am.

Principal’s report continued:

External School Review update Kadina Memorial’s External School Review (ESR) report is available on the school website.

A three-day review was held mid last term, where students, staff and parents met with an external panel of principals to discuss and reflect on learning and programs as well as educational outcome data.

The purpose of the ESR is to support schools to raise achievement, sustain high performance and to provide quality assurance to build and sustain public confidence in government schools.

We invite the school community to read the report which can be accessed by visiting the link: https://www.kms.sa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/2021-External-School-Review.pdf Introducing new staff We welcome four new staff members to Kadina Memorial this term.

Grace Inman, a Pre Service Teacher with us last term, and Jacob Nelson who has just completed his teaching studies, will fill Teacher Pathways positions. This will ensure teaching continuity and flexibility at our school, as well as providing both Grace and Jacob valuable career experiences of working across many year levels.

Grace Inman Jacob Nelson

Lili Roach will continue with us in term 4 in the primary world. Lili has made good connections with students and staff having worked at our school last term as a Temporary Relief Teacher. Lili is now the lead teacher of 3CH.

Cody Lange also joins us in the HASS/ English department, a position made vacant with teachers Caroline Kennett and Stacey Bradshaw now on maternity leave. Cody worked previously at Henley High School and will teach English and Research Project in Senior School.

Welcome Jayne – 2022 Deputy Principal At the conclusion of 2021 colleague and Deputy Principal Debbie Terrett is taking Long Service Leave. Debbie, whose teaching career spans 40-plus years, has decided to step down from leadership and enjoy travelling with her husband, Marty, wherever the state and international borders allow.

It is my pleasure to announce and introduce Jayne Winter, an experienced educator from Moonta Area School, has won the Deputy Principal and Head of R-6 role.

“I feel very fortunate to be joining Kadina Memorial as Deputy Principal in 2022. “I believe every child should have the opportunity to develop to their full potential, and know I am joining a community of learners who thrive on a challenge. I am looking forward to leading a team of teachers and support staff who share that desire to see every learner succeed. See you next year.” - Jayne Winter

Community Garden Busy Bee The Community Garden is taking shape thanks to a ‘busy bee’ on the first Sunday of the school holidays. Thank you to Kadina Apex members Paula and Brad Venning and nephews Max Yates and Hugh Price who joined our Kadina Memorial helpers. They included Meagan, Peter, Tom and Will Daniel, Mary-Jayne Hickman, Alex Lister, and her parents Mark and Pam Hickman, Stephen Nelson, Paula, Lexie and Georgia McKay, and myself.

All R-12 students are to wear a navy school approved hat in term 4 while outside. Students are also reminded to bring a water bottle to school each day. Alistair Williams Principal

“Having lived in the area with my family for four years, I have met many families through sport, and I’m really looking forward to building connections with the wider school community and beyond.

Student Success Many students take on additional activities and pursuits out of school and we share a few of these success stories with you in this week’s newsletter. Music exams The regional music exams of the Australian Music Examinations Board were held early September. Adelaide examiner Rodney Smith visited Kadina for these tests. Congratulations to the following students on their successful examinations: Lahni Sims, Preliminary Grade Piano: A Fletch Bussenschutt, Preliminary Grade Piano for Leisure: B+ Rushton Sims, 1st Grade Piano: B+ Aviril McIntosh, 3rd Grade Piano: B+ Cameron Edmiston, 5th Grade Piano for Leisure: A Erin Martin, 5th Grade Piano for Leisure: B Molly Przibilla, Preliminary Grade Violin: B+ Monica Metcalf: 2nd Grade Cello: A Local instrumental teachers of these students are Julie Ayles (piano), Nola Cowley (piano), Jennifer Cowley (cello) and Jessica Charles (violin).

Above, Monica Metcalf and Cameron Edmiston.

Mullets for Mental Health Well done to Year 9 student Kedon Crosby and his father Mark, who took action with clippers to raise funds and awareness for the Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health last month. The duo’s quest raised more than $2,500 to support awareness and research into mental health.

Above, Kedon in the centre surrounded by his mates.

Adelaide Plunge for Ronald McDonald House Year 12 student Cheyanne Ostendorf raised $1,400 to take the plunge for Ronald McDonald House through a local raffle, donation tins and an online collection page. Supported by her Aunty, Ronald McDonald House chief executive officer, Cheyanne plunged 26 stories down Adelaide’s Intercontinental Hotel in late September. Cheyanne said it was an amazing experience to “plunge” from a great height but an even better feeling knowing the fundraiser assisted sick children and their families. “I’ve heard many stories of people in our local community who have made use of the Ronald McDonald House and commented on how welcomed they felt there,” she said. “Being able to meet and speak to some of the children who had spent a lot of time in Ronald McDonald House was eye opening as they were in such great spirits, having been surrounded by such positive people and not having to worry about money for city accommodation. “This is why an event like this is really important because it takes away some of the added stress on parents when the real focus is on their child getting better.”

Above, Cheyanne “plunges” 26 stories. Great work!

BE AN UPSTANDER OR A BYSTANDER

R-6 Pastoral Care this term is focussing on BYSTANDER behaviour. Unfortunately, last term there was an increase in students’ watching unkind and mean behaviour in the yard. Some students didn’t intervene in a safe and respectful way or report the problem as they considered it SNITCHING rather than SEEKING HELP. Often the problem then got bigger and bigger which meant that students’ feelings were hurt or there was a physical altercation. In discussion with a parent last term her comment was: “I believe Bystander is just as bad as the offender’s behaviour”. This term we are encouraging students’ to be an ‘UPSTANDER not a BYSTANDER’, and to use their “SPECIAL SUPERPOWERS” (a clip all years 3-6 will watch in the coming weeks, R-2’s will watch ‘Be an UPSTANDER’) These short clips provide guidance and helpful strategies to support students if they see unkind or mean behaviour including:

• Stand up to the person and tell them it’s not OK • Tell them to stop it – in a cool way • Distract the person by doing something different (e.g ‘C’mon let’s get on with the game’ or ‘Let’s go to the

playground’) • Let the person know that no-one likes what they are doing- ‘Let’s keep things friendly heh!’ • Do not stay and provide an audience - Walk away and take the person who is being targeted with you • Tell a teacher or an adult- it’s not snitching it’s called getting help!

You may like to watch with your child: ‘Be an UPSTANDER’ (R-2) https://www.google.com/search?q=be+an+upstander+%E2%80%94+not+a+bystander&rlz=1C5CHFA_enAU861AU861&oq=be+an+upstander&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0i512l7j0i390l2.5389j0j15&sour 'MY SPECIAL SUPERPOWER' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ptoxibPNzU BYSTANDERS may also be given consequences if they are deemed to be watching the nasty and unkind behaviour and not doing anything!! Let’s have a great term and lets all do our bit to make KMS the safest, friendliest and happiest place it can be! 2021 Choir Festival At the end of last term, 45 Kadina Memorial students combined with peers from across the state for the Festival of Music Choir, performing a series of spectacular shows for its 130th anniversary. When the first choir performed in 1891, I’m sure organisers and participants could never have imagined the amazing professional spectacle our students presented for this 130th milestone. Kadina Memorial students were again fortunate to perform in two separate shows for this year’s Festival. The Adelaide Show was held at the Entertainment Centre, as the Festival Theatre (our usual venue) is currently under renovation. The use of the Entertainment Centre meant big things for this year’s Festival; a bigger choir, a bigger orchestra and a bigger dance troupe with 1,500 students on stage at one time! Our very own Sid Allen (Year 6) won a solo for this performance, and shone brightly during the special song celebrating the 130th Anniversary of the Festival, “Sounds of the Public School.” Two weeks later, the choir performed their final show in Port Pirie as part of the East of the Ranges Choir. Whilst the Adelaide Show is an amazing experience for our students to perform with all the special effects prestigious Adelaide Venues offer, the Port Pirie Performance is an opportunity for families, friends and teachers to see the performers up close in a smaller venue. Kadina Memorial School was well represented at this performance with the following staff and students taking extra opportunities during the show:

• Taylor Rundle, Isabella Atkinson, Eleanor Francis, Lahni Sims, Josh Rundle, Sid Allen, Eliza Smith and Monica Metcalf won solo parts

• Ashlyn Hicks, Lily Farrell, Aurora Taogaga-Shailer, Morgan Phillips, Jemima Polkinghorne and Teaysha Borg became the “teachers” – leading the choir as Choreographer Leaders

• Natalia Bagnato, Monica Metcalf, Lily Farrell and Ashlyn Hicks created vision for anti-bullying song “I Have a Voice,” which was displayed on the big screen behind the choir during the performance

• The KMS Stage Band, led by Mrs Rowe-Sims, performed as guest artists • IMS Teacher Mrs Sherelle Rowe-Sims performed on trumpet and tenor saxophone as part of the band that

accompanied the choir. • R-6 Performing Arts Teacher Mr Ben Graefe was the conductor for both the choir and the band.

Accessing these performances is a privilege and a huge benefit for our students. It provides an opportunity to practice literacy and numeracy skills when learning songs (lyrics, learning to read music, beats, timing) but also develops memory capabilities. Students’ social and communication skills are also improved, as it takes courage to perform in front of a crowd. Our students have again done this far above expectations and should be proud of how well they handled themselves on stage, because I know I am! A huge thank you to Mrs Terrett, Mr Smith, Mrs Hood, Mrs Mengersen, Mrs Thomson (formally Miss Smart), Mrs Allen, and Mrs Rowe-Sims for their support with making the performances happen. Ben Graefe, R-6 Performing Arts Teacher Above, Kadina Choir performs. More 2021 Choir photos will be published in this year’s School Magazine.

Unit News Welcome to Term 4 and another fun filled and engaging term of learning. Staffing will remain the same with Tania Bell as the full time Junior class teacher, and Rachel Foster and I sharing the teaching of the Senior class. Our integrated theme for this term will focus for the first five weeks on the ‘Pig the Pug’ book series by Aaron Blabey. Week 1: Pig the Pug Week 2: Pig the Fibber Week 3: Pig the Winner Week 4: Pig the Grub Week 5: Pig the Star Lots of resources have been made available about these books in all curriculum areas and we are looking forward to using these to create learning programs. In Weeks 6-9 there will be a Christmas focus to complete our integrated themes for the year. During this time, we will also look at the ‘Pig the Elf’ story. The Maths topic for the term will be about ‘Number’ and we will be well resourced to teach this topic in a hands-on manner. We look forward to sharing some of the activities on the above topics in future newsletters. Sandy Mumford, Unit Coordinator

Star of the Sea – the Goat Show must go on! The generational gap closed when year 9 Ag students introduced their goats to Wallaroo’s Star of the Sea residents late last term. Kadina Memorial students were invited to ‘parade’ their goat handling skills and share their learning as part of a bigger program of bringing the fair of the Royal Adelaide Show to residents. Matthew Crosby, Aimee Bettess, Georgia McKay, Della Krieg and Grace Neumann introduced four goats to their audience, which resulted in instant conversation, reminiscing and plenty of laughs and giggles. Star of the Sea’s Lifestyle Coordinator Danielle Price said it was a cross generational activity, bridging the gap between senior citizens and students. “Student Georgia McKay was telling me about the goat ‘David’ and his dog-like personality attributes, she also described his ‘relaxed’ performance at the Kadina Show and how they would miss out on a second chance to redeem themselves at the Royal Adelaide Show because of its cancellation,” she said. “At the time we were planning to bring elements of the Show to residents and animals were an important part. “Many of our residents have had a life-time association with animals through farming and as pets which sparked the idea of giving students another opportunity to “show” their goats as well as provide a fun, hands-on sensory activity for our community. “It’s well documented in studies about the benefit of pet therapy, which was clearly obvious when the students arrived with their goats and began interacting with the residents.” Mrs Price said the goat visit was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Kadina Memorial Ag teacher Holly Crighton said students have been working with the goats for the past term, with extra time dedicated during Wednesday Ag Club at lunch time. She said the visit to Star of the Sea was heartening and enlightening, with students discussing the experience on the way back to school. Ms Crighton said aside from some toileting issues the ‘kids’ were well behaved, and the students felt very proud of giving back to the community and bringing joy to others.

Yorke Peninsula Field Days – Class Act Year 12 student Deacon Bates can now add wool classing to his list of achievements. As part of his Community Studies Project Deacon assisted with organising and communicating with the YP Field Days committee in regards to the Ag Learning Centre's contribution to the Green Plains Children Track. While he was packing bags, Ms Crighton told him he should enter the fleece judging competition for experience. After significant persuasion, Deacon competed and came first place in the Junior Merino Fleece Judging 16-25 years! Deacon was competing against professionals and other students from across the state. There were a handful of Kadina Memorial students who also participated in the competition. Congratulations to Deacon and all those involved. Well Done!

Sporting Achievements Congratulations to year 9 student Imogen Trengove winning the Tennis SA Foundation Cup Under 15 Girls Singles carnival at Berri in the Riverland during the school holidays. Imogen won the final 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the match tiebreak and will now play number one for South Australia at the national event in Brisbane in December.

To surfing, year 9 student Meg Day placed second in the Queen of the Bowl held on Monday last week in difficult conditions at Seaford. This is in addition to Meg being selected to surf at the Australian Indigenous Surfing Championships at Bells Beach, Victoria in May, which was cancelled due to COVID. Meg has also been selected to represent South Australia in the Under 16 girls division at The Australian Junior Surfing Titles, run by Surfing Australia, scheduled to be held on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland later this year.

In football, year 12 student Will Neumann was awarded Woodville West Torren’s Lindsay Head Golden Eagle Award with 53 votes in the 2021 Under 18 season on the weekend. It caps off a stellar season for Will who also played in the Under-18 premiership side for the Eagles, along with Jonte Hunter-Price and former students Will Pearce, Brock Thomson, Zac Phillips and Charlie Adams.
