Transition:

Transition for students into Prep and Year 6into high school is a significant part ofstudent’s education. Transition is a word thatis talked about at the start and end ofprimary school. Therefore, how do we as aschool support transition in the early phase (into Prep) andtransition into the secondary phase (year 6-7)? We provide:

School Parade and Formal Uniform in 2019

Next year, whole school parade will still occur on a Monday andwe will continue to teach our “Cool Tool”, as part of our PositiveBehaviour for Learning approach at Dalby State School. Paradewill also be a part of celebrating success in the curriculumspace as well as celebrating extra-curricular events. We alsohad the opportunity to celebrate attendance and this will stilloccur as we work towards meeting our attendance target of94%. We encourage our Year 4-6 students to continue to wearformal uniform as this has been successful this year with themajority of our Year 4-6 students wearing their formal uniform.We have also seen other students from Prep – Year 3 wearingtheir formal uniform. It is certainly lovely to see students wearing

• Orientation opportunities — to help children andparents become familiar with the school setting andadministrative matters such as how to enrol, uniformsand stationery requirements

• Transition opportunities – connecting with learninginstitutions such as Kindys (before Prep) or the localhigh school for students transitioning to secondaryeducation.

• Primary school readiness/Secondary schoolreadiness and capacity building — build the skillsand abilities required by children, the capacity ofparents and teachers to support the transitionprocess and the readiness of the school to receivechildren of various ability levels

• Parental engagement — promote parents'engagement and commitment to their child's learningsuch as reading to children and connecting with theirchild's teachers, as well as parental participation inschool life such as attending parent evenings andevents. Encouraging parents to visit the local highschool “meet and greet” and information night.

• Partnerships and relationships — designed topromote and facilitate networks and collaborationsbetween stakeholders which service to influence andsupport positive transition to school experiences.

Information and Communication Technology in2019

A huge thank you to parents of Year 4-6students in 2019 for completing ICTagreement forms and ensuring payments ofthe ICT levy is done by the end of this term.Families accessing the BYOL option, please

ensure that you have the required specifications and you can dothis by speaking to the staff in the office. Please also be awarethat the ICT levy will also cover additional equipment needed inthe classroom, such as writing books, art equipment etc.

White Ribbon Day on Friday 23rd November:

White Ribbon Day provides an importantopportunity for all of us to stand up, speakout and act to prevent violence againstwomen. Violence against women is neveracceptable and needs to be eliminated. Weall have a responsibility to speak out againstit. Schools, workplaces and individuals canhelp reduce violence against women bydemonstrating respect for women and girls and by modellingand valuing healthy, respectful relationships.

The Dalby Chamber of Commerce has organised Dalby’s WhiteRibbon Breakfast to be held on 23rd November. Thank youto our current school captains and school vice captains forattending this special event and supporting this importantcause. Thank you to the Dalby Chamber for inviting our leadersto this community event.

End of the year Concert on Monday 10thDecember:

Our annual End of the Year Concert will beheld on the school oval with studentsperforming on the library steps. The themethis year will be ‘A Trip Around the World’and students from each year level willpresent a performance based on different

countries. Our end of year celebrations will commence with aBBQ at 5:00pm. The End of Year Concert will commence at6:00pm until late. There is no entry fee, however a gold coindonation is appreciated. Please come along and support ourschool concert.

Routines help family life run smoothly and can help withchildren’s behaviour. Here’s how to use routines to helpwith behaviour management.

Why routines help with behaviour management

Routines help family members know who should do what,when, in what order and how often.

This can mean less inappropriate behaviour about boring thingssuch as cleaning teeth, tidying up after play, or switching the TVoff. Or there might be times when your child often misbehaves,such as when you’re shopping, driving or visiting. A routine canhelp you plan ahead for these times.

You can also build routines for young children around play,meals and sleep. When children have had enough good-qualitysleep, nutritious food and plenty of play, they’re more likely tobehave the way you want.

And routines help young children feel safe and secure,which is what they need to grow and learn about things likeappropriate ways to behave.

• If your child is old enough, talk about routines withher. By the time children are school age, discussionsabout routines can be a great way of helping themlearn important things like how to organisethemselves and how to be ready on time.

• Plan routines for particularly demanding times in thefamily day – for example, before and after work andschool. Routines that give everybody something todo – or at least keep children busy while you getthings done – can help things run more smoothly.

• Add some downtime into your child’s routine. Thisgives your child time for a sleep or rest, which canhelp with behaviour. It also gives him time to learn toentertain himself.

• If you want to put time limits on some activities, suchas screen time, you can make this part of the routine.For example, children can watch TV or use theirtablets, but only between 5 and 5.30 pm (orwhatever suits your family).

• Put up an illustrated poster of your routinesomewhere everyone can see it. Making the posterwith your child could be fun and give you the chanceto talk about the routine.

• Involve your child in parts of the routine that she canmanage by herself – for example, washing her handsbefore eating.

• Find ways to remind your child to follow the routinewithout your help. For example, put a radio alarmclock in your child’s room. The music can be a signalthat it’s time to wake up, time to start getting readyfor school, or time to come out of the bedroom in themorning.

• Think about whether parts of the routine can be yourchild’s responsibility. Your child can learn new skillsand help the family by doing household chores – forexample, a preschooler could set the table.

• Watch out for and praise your child when he followsthe routine without help.

Swimming Carnivals 2018

Junior Swimming Carnival (Yr 1-2) Tuesday 4December 9.00am-11.15am

Parents/Caregivers and friends are invited to come along andcheer for children in the Yr 1-2 swimming carnival. The aim ofthe carnival is for the children to demonstrate skills that theyhave learned in lessons. Each child will be in at least 3 events.

PREP STUDENTS ARE NOT INVOLVED IN THISCARNIVAL.

Senior Swimming Carnival (Yr 3-6) Friday 7December 9am-1.30pm

A Program of Events for Yr 3-6 Carnival will be available fromthe office for 50c in Week 9. There will be no names printed inthe Program.

All children attending Swimming Carnivals are to be in fullsports uniform.

Make sure you have hat, sunscreen and water bottle.

Swimming Program Term 4

The Dalby State School Swimming Program will start for allstudents on Monday 8 October and finish on Monday 3rdDecember.

The Swimming fee this year is $40 per student which includesthe swimming program and bus transport. This needs to bepaid in full by Friday 21st September. Students will not be ableto participate if fee is not paid in full or a payment plan isarranged with front office.

• Children are to be dropped at the pool between8.30-8.45am. No one goes to school.

• Bus children will be dropped at the pool.

• Supervision will be provided from 8.30 – 9.00am.

• Children are to bring a snack for morning tea and awater bottle and hat. No one will be allowed to visitthe canteen. They also need to bring lunch which willbe eaten back at school.

• Children need to wear House uniform.

• Events consist of Fun Games in the Little Pool, 15m,25m and 50m events in the Big Pool. There is noprinted program.

• Some parents who have helped at swimming will beneeded to assist in the pool.

• Children will be walked back to school by theirteachers after the carnival at 11.30am.

• Children go direct to the pool from 8.30 – 8.45am.No one goes to school.

• Bus children will be dropped off at the pool.

• Children are to bring their own morning tea and adrink bottle. Children will be allowed to visit thecanteen for lunch.

• Children are to wear House uniform.

• Approximately 6-7 parents will be needed fortimekeeping and judging.

• Children will walk back to school with their teachersat the conclusion of the carnival.

• Age Champions: To qualify for the age championtrophy, swimmers must compete in at least 3events minimum in the Championship Division.No points from B Division or width races counttowards the age championship trophies.

Students who have a current pool pass are eligible for a $16discount. The pool pass must be presented to the front officeto be photocopied for discount to be applied.

Some makeup lessons may take place and if necessary thesewill be advised via the school newsletter- Mon 22nd October isa Student Free

Day and these lessons will be made up on Monday 3rdDecember.

Swimming is a very important part of the school HPEcurriculum. It is important for all children to participate wherepossible.

Children will be evaluated on their progress.

Report Cards-2018 Semester 2Report cards will be emailed to parents of students in years 1to 6 (Prep students will receive a printed copy) on Wednesday12th December 2018. All Hire and ICT levy Laptops will need to be returned to schoolon Monday 3rd December 2018.

2019

All students new to the BYOL program in 2019 will have an onboarding session on Wednesday 23rd January 2019 in A Blockfrom 12pm to 3pm, we encourage students to come to thissession however laptops can be on boarded in the classroomonce school commences. Students that have been in the BYOLprogram in 2018 have already had their laptops on boardedand therefore are not required to have this done again.

Returning Enrolments

If your child is not continuing at Dalby State School in 2019 weask that you notify the office and classroom teacher as soonas practical. This will help even out classes for 2019 when theyare drawn up during the term. If your child is remaining at DalbyState School there is no need to do anything as all students areautomatically rolled over for 2019.

Prep Enrolments for 2019

Thank you to everyone that have returned their enrolment formsfor next year, if you are yet to bring enrolment forms in couldyou please drop them to the School Office. If you are unsureyou can call the office on 07 4672 3666 to confirm we haveyour completed enrolment forms. Sport Houses have beenallocated for the 2019 Preps if you would like to know yourchild’s house there is a list at the uniform shop and at Lift Off (ifyour child attends) you can also call the School Office.
