I had the opportunity last week to attend the North Coast Secondary Principals Council conference. Although I do not like having time out of the school, I feel this is one of the more important forums for me to attend and provide input from the Nimbin Central School perspective and feedback to the Nimbin Central School community. I had the opportunity to discuss the new enrolment policy with my colleagues and the ways we can work together, in our area, to make this work to achieve the best educational outcomes for our students and families. I received a lot of invaluable information and support for our upcoming External Validation and ‘tips and tricks’ to assist with this process. The continuation of the Fair Funding campaign across the state was discussed and ways we might address the looming teacher shortages. But mostly, talking with Principals from other schools always affirms for me how fortunate I am to work in Nimbin Central School with its vibrant student base, staff and community. This week is Education Week and I would like to congratulate our winners of Education Week awards, presented this week at the Lismore Workers Club. NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

From the Deputy Principal Hi everyone It’s been a busy time as always at Nimbin Central these last few weeks. Wellbeing Day on Friday 16 August was a huge success, with students from Kindy through to Year 12 engaging in a diverse range of fun activities aimed at promoting mental and physical health. Well done and thank you to Mr Wheeler for pulling it all together and to the rest of the team for the extra work they put in to create workshops and activities. Days like these really make Nimbin Central a rich, dynamic and vibrant school for students to grow in. The new school house system has been running for almost two terms now. Students are awarded points for having a positive attitude to learning, showing leadership and being a good citizen. At the end of the year the winning houses will celebrate with a special lunch. There will also be awards for individual student point leaders. In the Primary school we have Ngamaal (Goanna) on 425 points and Djanbung (Platypus) on 333 – it seems that the Djanbungs are going to have to work hard to catch up! In the Secondary school there are four houses. Jullum (fish) leads on 1507 points, with Gurumen (kangaroo) not far behind on 1467. Miwan (eagle) has 1339 points and Yumbah (snake) has 1308 points. Student leaders for each house are as below:

Leone Cox the choir director was very pleased with the singers’ efforts and co-operative demeanour. They sound amazing. Peer Support Program This week in Peer Support children will revise what they have learned about resilience and discuss the people who show them support. Through a story the children identify where the character has used her personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identify times when she needed support to continue. The children discuss a range of challenges and determine the best person to approach for support. They consolidate the protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths and skills and identifying five people they can go to for support. You can assist your child by reminding them of their qualities and skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenging situations.

Peer Support (cont) In Week 7 we introduce a three-step model to encourage resilient responses; Pause, Plan, Proceed. The children take part in an activity to identify their feelings and the immediate effect on their bodies, such as butterflies in their stomachs. The normalcy of feelings is acknowledged and the importance of being proactive is stressed. The children learn that pausing when they are emotional is helpful. They can do this by being still, taking a deep breath or counting to ten.

Pausing gives children space to see a situation more accurately before planning a response. Ask your child to describe the three steps of the model and what is involved in each one.

As always, if you have any concerns about your child’s learning or about events happening please take the opportunity to talk to us so that we can make school a happy positive learning experience. Thank you for your support. Dian Plesko and Primary Staff

NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

Enrolment policy Information for parents

The Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools policy is in place to assist schools to meet their obligations under the Education Act 1990 - to ensure that every student has a place at their local school. The policy also communicates to staff and the community a transparent enrolment process.

Why was the enrolment policy revised? Across the state, many communities are changing. Some are growing at rates never seen before. Some schools that used to be able to accept out-of-area enrolments, no longer have the room to do so. The revised policy is designed to support schools to manage all enrolment applications, encourage greater consistency in decision-making and make sure the enrolment choices are clear for parents.

What are the changes? The enrolment cap The enrolment cap is the number of students that can be enrolled at a school based on the school ’s permanent accommodation. The enrolment cap tells us whether the school may or may not have the capacity to accept non–local enrolments. It is not a target or limit on the number of local enrolments a school can take. Each school with a local intake area will have a cap set by the department from Term 4 , 2019.

Within the enrolment cap, a number of enrolment places (the buffer) must be kept aside for the likely number of local students who will need to enrol during the year. For this reason, a school will not take non-local students once they reach their buffer, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

100-point residential address check Parents planning to enrol their child at a school that is near or at their buffer or cap will be asked to complete the 100-point residential address check to confirm they live within the school’s designated intake area. This means you will need to provide documents to verify your child’s current address. So that schools only seek information relevant to your child’s enrolment, a list of approved documents for the residential address check is available from the school or the department’s website at https://education.nsw.gov. au/policy-library/policies/enrolment-of-students-in-nsw- government-schools.

Selection criteria for non-local enrolment Sibling enrolments are now clearly prioritised (where possible) and selection criteria for non-local enrolment will not include student ability, performance or achievement.

NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL 30/08/19 Web Address: www.nimbin-c.schools.nsw.edu.au

NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

What has not changed? Schools will continue to enrol students who live in their local intake area, regardless of the school’s cap status. There are no changes to enrolment rights of siblings of non-local students. In schools with available places, each enrolment application is considered on its merits, including if siblings currently attend the school. If the school is below capacity, out-of-area applications for siblings of current students will be given enrolment priority. Schools will continue to provide families with support and advice during the enrolment process, including assessment of exceptional and compelling circumstances particularly for vulnerable students and their families. Schools will also continue to apply the policy fairly and consistently using transparent and accountable processes when making decisions around enrolment applications. Parents have a right to appeal to determine whether the stated processes have been applied in a procedurally fair manner.

But what do the changes mean for me? What if my child is already enrolled but we do not live in that school’s intake area? Your child will remain enrolled at the school as the revised policy does not affect students already enrolled in NSW Government schools.

We were in area when my child was enrolled in the school. The department has since changed the school’s boundary and our residence is now out of area. I have other children and I want them all to go to the same school. What are my options? At times it is necessary for the department to make adjustments to a school’s local enrolment intake area. This could mean a family with a child/children already enrolled is then outside the local intake area. When this happens, the family will still be able to enrol siblings together at the school, regardless of whether the school is over the buffer or cap. I already have a child enrolled as an out-of-area student in a NSW Government school. Can I enrol my other children at that school too? This will depend on the capacity of the school: If the school is not near its buffer, then siblings should be able to be enrolled at the school. In fact, siblings of students

currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

If the school is nearing its buffer, then the school will form a non-local enrolment panel. The panel considers non-local enrolment applications when the number of non-local applications received exceeds the number of places available below the buffer. Again, in this instance, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

If the school is at capacity they will not accept non- local enrolment applications unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I have already accepted an offer for my child to attend a school in 2020 that is not my local school. What happens now? The enrolment will proceed. Non-local enrolments accepted before Term 4 2019 for students starting in 2020 should not be affected.

What is the criteria for enrolment in a school that is not my local school? Schools that are able to accept non-local enrolment applications establish a non-local enrolment selection panel, if demand exceeds the number of places below the school’s buffer. Schools are required to make the selection criteria available to the school community.

My circumstances are challenging and I think this school is best for my child. We live outside the school’s intake area. What should I do? We understand that not everyone’s circumstances are the same, and that there are instances where exceptional circumstances will need to be considered. Your circumstances should be discussed with the principal of your local school who can assist you to negotiate an out-of-area enrolment if there are exceptional and compelling circumstances.

Science Week 2019 – “Destination Moon”

The Assembly was quiet as Neil Armstrong stated “That’s one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” Students and staff alike were mesmerised by the grainy video and static-filled sound of the 1969 Apollo 9 moon landing. Watching the moon landing marked the conclusion of our celebrations for Science Week 2019 – “Destination Moon” and acknowledged the 50

th anniversary of the first man on the moon. In a very

busy week, students, staff and community members engaged in a variety of space-themed activities. These activities included Space Trivia Morning Tea; Build a Lunar Lander (from recyclables) competition; the Egg Drop Challenge; Space Art, building a Mars Base on Minecraft Education, a showcase of 1960s technologies, a whole school (Kindergarten to Year 12) Assembly and our most successful Astronomy Evening to date. Our students accessed valuable learning opportunities across all Science and Technology syllabi and gained an insight into what the world (and our solar system) was like 50 years ago. Congratulations to all participants and competition winners. Special thanks goes to those who braved the winter chill to attend the Astronomy Evening (over 50 people), Phil the Astronomer, North Coast Astronomy and the wonderful staff team who put it all together. Credit must also be extended to Mrs Scarrabelotti and the Kindergarten class for their creation of the most “space-tacular”, life-size model of the Lunar Lander, shown below. NIMBIN CENTRAL SCHOOL “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible”

On Friday, August 16th, Nimbin Central School held its annual ‘Wellbeing Day’: a day designed to promote health, happiness and resilience in our students, and the spectacular weather set the scene for an action-packed and thought-provoking event. One focus area for the day was the school’s implementation of the ‘White Ribbon’ program. Ms. Piaf, Mr. Howard and a very capable and enthusiastic team of student leaders took our primary and secondary students through activities designed to improve their sense of self and to promote discussions around ways to create and sustain positive relationships with one another. Students contributed a range of strategies to our ‘White Ribbon’ wall and took home ‘White Ribbon’ coloured bands which expressed the kinds of positive qualities they want to show to others and also have shown to them. Our ‘White Ribbon’ team are excited to continue embedding this important program into our school and would value any community support or feedback. Another wonderful initiative on the day was our Sensory Wellbeing arena, an innovative and evidence-based approach to improving student’s awareness of the kinds of stimulus – things they see, hear, smell and touch – that make them feel calm and happy. Mrs. Scarrabelotti put so much time, energy and creativity into the day and the results were clear: our primary students and our visiting pre-schoolers were smiling, laughing, and eager to try the different activities. Our primary students were also privy to a wonderful and thought-provoking performance by Brainstorm Productions. The performance, entitled ‘The Human Race’, explored ways to combat bullying, and the importance of embracing diversity and keeping safe online. Students and staff were particularly impressed with the energy and professionalism of the actors. Lastly, to continue our positive momentum with our ever-growing House Groups system, both primary and secondary students engaged in competitive and fun mini-olympics activities organised by Mr. van Dugteren and Ms. Evans – our House-Group Coordinator. It was a matter of Ngamaal versus Djanbung in our Primary School, and it was such a close call that our supervising teachers declared a draw. Laughter, problem-solving and team-work were declared the actual winners on the day! Elsewhere, the battle raged between our secondary houses Jullum, Gurumen, Miwan and Yumbah in a four-way contest for house points. After a number of tightly fought battles, lots of chanting and cheering and some over-enthusiastic participation from some of our teachers, Jullum were declared the winners. A massive thank you has to go to all of our wonderful teaching staff who supervised, participated in and ran workshops throughout the day. We would also like to thank Paul Phillips and Michelle Renshaw from The Buttery who came in to run interactive and insightful activities that provoked deep discussions and reflection. Above all, thanks to our students who embraced the day with open minds and hearts, as they always do at our beautiful school. Please – engage in discussions with our young people about their wellbeing and about the different issues that they face in their home, school and community lives. They have so many valuable and important insights to share.
