Training commenced on Tuesday 12 February and will conclude on Tuesday 12 March. Swimming training commences at 7.30am and concludes at 8.00am. There is no cost associated with this training. It is an expectation that parents stay at these sessions as a duty of care. Miss Smith, Mrs Hogan and/or Mrs Hooper will be running the training sessions. We are aware that some students complete swimming training privately and will not attend these early morning sessions. Supervising staff members are qualified in Applied First Aid. This training is for Y3-Y6 students. The focus is on fitness and endurance, swim starts and relay skills. Students attending need to be competent swimmers as these are training sessions, not teaching sessions i.e. students will be expected to swim approximately 10 laps of the 25m pool (including warm up and cool down laps). All students are still eligible to swim in our MPPS Year 3-6 swimming carnival if they do not attend the training sessions. Swim trials will be on Thursday 7 March and our MPPS Swim Carnival is being held on Friday 15 March 2019. The trial and carnival will take place at Somerset Street Pool in Victoria Park.

LIBRARY NEWS

Kiss and Drop For new families and as a reminder to existing families, the Kiss and Drop area on Queens Road is a NO PARKING zone. This area is used solely to pick up and drop off your children. When picking up, if you cannot see your child, please do another lap around the block. Sports Faction Tops Order forms for faction tops are available from the front office and can be left in the P&C box for the order to be processed

A warm welcome back to the start of 2019. The Library is staffed by Library Officer, Mrs Penny Porter. The Library is open all day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Student borrowing commences in week 2 with Kindy to Year 6 students able to borrow two books for a period of one week. Please make sure that your child has a cloth library bag or similar for protecting books as they are carried to and from school and that it is clearly marked with their name. As parents, you can assist by finding out your child’s weekly scheduled borrowing session and ensuring that the books are returned on time. In addition to the class borrowing session, children can return and borrow books at the following times: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before school (from 8.30am) and after school (until 3.15pm) Wednesday and Thursday lunch time (12.55pm-1.15pm). Parents are welcome to come with their child to help them borrow on the days that the Library is open before and after school. The library is open for students on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at lunch time. During this time, students can play board games and read books. Every year we ask for parent volunteers to help in the Library. It can be as little as ten minutes after drop-off in the morning or before pick-up in the afternoon to help with shelving. If you are able to commit to a longer period of time there are a variety of tasks, such as book covering. No experience is necessary and training is provided. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call in and see Penny in the Library on the days that she is here, or leave your name and contact number at the front office. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in the Library.

Wakakirri Auditions Friday 21 February 2019—second lunch in the music room Year 3-6 only Yahoo, Wakakirri is back in 2019! Due to last year's success and increasing interest in the Wakakirri Program it is likely that some children will miss out as we are limiting places this year to 50. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays between 3-4 pm. You will not be required at all rehearsals (depending on which section you are in).

Christian Religious Education (CRE) and Baha'i

As highlighted in one of last year’s Newsletters, CRE and Baha'i will no longer be held during class time. Lessons will however be offered at other times. Baha'i lessons will be offered after school on a Thursday afternoon. This time however is flexible and Neda is happy to negotiate this if it suits the majority. CRE co-ordinated by Patricia Olde will also be offering lunch time lessons possible on a Tuesday or a Thursday but to be negotiated with parents and students. It is imperative however that you contact the front office to notify us of your intention to attend either lesson. This is particularly important as classroom teachers will be able to remind students to attend. Either phone Sally at the front office on 9316 1045, email [email protected] or ask your child to drop in a note.

CHAPLAIN

Responsibility Being responsible is a sign of growing up. It means you are willing to be accountable for your behaviour. It means doing something to the best of your ability and keeping your agreements.

CANTEEN

SCHOOL BANKING

The canteen requires volunteers for Term 1 2019. There is a roster outside the canteen or you can text 0430 141 282. The canteen is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A reminder that our online ordering can be accessed at quickcliq.com.au . Julie Green—Canteen Manager

School banking will commence this Thursday 14 February and run every Thursday morning between 8.20am and 8.45am in the canteen. We would like to welcome and thank Meenakshi Arya and Amy Chang for volunteering as new school banking co-ordinators.

Welcome Morning Tea for New Families We would like to invite new parents for morning tea on Friday 22 February at 8.45am in our staff room. This will be an opportunity to clarify policies or any other queries you may have. This will also be an opportunity to meet other new parents at our school. Mount Pleasant Primary School is a wonderful community and I have the pleasure of serving as Chaplain on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays. So what does a Chaplain do? Pastoral Care—The role of Chaplain is wide and varied, depending on the needs of the school, but the major focus is pastoral care. I count it a privilege to pastorally care for the students, staff and families at our school, so if I can be of help please let me know. We all face challenging times in our lives, and having a ‘safe place’ to share and work through our feelings can help a lot. A message can be left at the front office or feel free to phone or visit me at the school. Of course, seeing a Chaplain is voluntary, and if you would rather your child does not catch up with me during the year, please let the front office or myself know. Other Activities—Other activities a Chaplain may be involved in are: helping out in classrooms and working with groups of students to promote well-being in target areas. For example I am trained to run the program Seasons for Growth which assists children to work through grief and cope with loss and change. A Chaplain may also help out on excursions and camps. Over the last six years I have loved going on the year 6/7 camps to Bridgetown. Making connections with the wider community is an important role of Chaplains and I currently co-ordinate the Ed Connect Program where members of the local community volunteer their time during school hours to mentor students. Another part of my role at Mount Pleasant Primary School is facilitating whole-school celebrations such as Harmony Day, hosting morning teas like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and we will continue running our ‘5 Cents Challenge’ this year which raises funds for education projects amongst the poor around the world. There are other activities that I am involved with around the school so do not be surprised if I keep popping up around the place.
