“I see in my neighbor the Person of Jesus Christ.” St. Gerard Majella
From the Principal
I hope this finds you and your
family well and enjoying these
summer days. Before we know it
another school year will be start-
ing and the busyness this brings
will begin.
I am looking forward to another
school year with this wonderful
Catholic community!
I would like to welcome all of
our new families and staff to St.
Mary Catholic School! We are
glad that you heard God’s call to
be a part of the ministry of Cath-
olic education. I will be sharing
general information in this news-
letter about the coming school
year and a few changes that are
in store as well.
Please be sure to check your
FastDirect often. If you are not
able to access FastDirect, please
contact Mrs. Smalley in the
school office for assistance.
Staff Changes
We will have a few staff changes
for the upcoming school year.
They are as follows:
Ms. Gina Cannella will be
teaching 3rd grade this year.
Gina holds a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Elementary Education
from Benedictine College. She
comes to us with 2 years of expe-
rience in Catholic schools. She
taught 2nd grade at St. Andrew
Catholic School in Fort Worth,
Texas and most recently at
Frassati Catholic Academy in
Thornton.
Ms. Alexandra Bohnsack will
be our Media Specialist as well
as our art teacher this year. Alex-
andra holds a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Psychology and a Mas-
ter of Education-Alliance for
Catholic Education from the
University of Notre Dame. She
taught 2nd grade for two years at
Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Catholic School in Glendale,
Arizona.
Please plan to participate in our
fundraising opportunities in order
to reach your $976 that you have
agreed to raise. This suggested
fundraising amount does not fully
cover our costs either. Your help
is needed! Scrip is an easy way
to raise this money. There is no
extra expense on your end. Use
Scrip to purchase groceries,
Mrs. Terri Smith
will be taking Mrs. Samantha
Smith’s maternity leave in the
fall. Mrs. Smith holds a Bache-
lor’s Degree in Physical Educa-
tion and has 10 credit hours to-
wards a Master’s in Education.
She currently holds a Colorado
Teacher Certificate. Mrs. Smith
has been a substitute teacher for
us for a couple of years.
Fundraising
Fundraising is a necessity for our
school. Our per pupil cost is ap-
proximately $6,705 per year.
With our Catholic tuition rate at
$4200, the remaining $2505 is
being offset by fundraising efforts
and supporting parish subsidies.

use them as gifts. Scrip can be
purchased over the summer in
the Parish office. Their summer

The First Day of School
The first day of school will be Monday,
August 27th. School will dismiss at 12:00
Noon. There will be NO after school Care on
this day. Regular school hours will begin on
Tuesday, August 28th. Regular school hours
are 8:15am-3:30pm. Let’s make a conscience
effort to ensure the students are in their class-
room seats by 8:10am to avoid being tardy.
Volunteer Hours
Volunteering at St. Mary Catholic School is
vital to the success of our school! When
everyone works together, the more vibrant
the community becomes. I am asking each
family to log at least 25 hours this school
year. This can be done by one family mem-
ber or each member can work toward the 25
hour requirement. If you have received a
scholarship, we ask that you volunteer at
least 40 hours. Be sure to log in your time
when you come to the school so that your
hours are accounted for. If you’d like to
volunteer to help track hours, call the school
office!
Ice Cream Social
Please join us for an Ice Cream Social after the
noon Mass from 1:00pm -3:00pm on Sunday,
August 26th at the school. All are welcome to
come visit the classrooms, meet the teachers
and bring school supplies prior to the first day
of school. This is also an opportunity to meet
new families and share summer happenings
over ice cream. I’m looking forward to seeing
everyone!
Back to School Night
We will have a Back to School Night on
Wednesday, September 5th beginning at
6:00pm. The evening will begin in the school
gym. We will be sharing important infor-
mation with you. You will have opportunities
to sign up for various committees, including
PTO and our Ambassadors Committee and
you will have an opportunity to go to your
child’s classroom and hear from your child’s
teacher about the expectations and various
happenings for the year. I encourage everyone
to attend!
Early Release
We will continue to have early release days
this school year. Our early release will be
the first Wednesday of MOST months.
Please be sure to check the school calendar
to know which months will be early release
months. Early release means a 1:00pm
dismissal. After school Care will be availa-
ble on these days. This will give our staff
extended opportunities for staff develop-
ment. Our first early release day will be
Wednesday, October 3rd.
New Family Orientation
If you are new to our school, please plan to
attend our New Family Orientation on Thurs-
day, August 30th beginning at 6:00pm in the
parish hall. This will be an opportunity for
you to learn more about our school and to ask
any questions you may have.
Lunch Orders
As soon as the lunch menus are available for
August and September they will be sent out so
you can place your orders.
Forgotten Lunches
We continue to have this problem of forgotten
lunches. Please make an effort to ensure that
your child has a lunch for the day. The lunch-
es that the teachers make are not meant to be a
convenience for families. It is meant for stu-
dents who forgot their lunch. When we make
a lunch for your child, it takes away from our
regular duties. If you receive a forgotten
lunch charge, please be sure to pay it right
away so that Mrs. Smalley doesn’t have to
spend time reminding you. Thank you for
your cooperation with this.
Academic Calendar and School Calendar
Enclosed are the academic and school calen-
dars for 2018-2019. Please keep these calen-
dars in a visible place for future reference. The
academic calendar gives you the days off dur-
ing the school year and the school calendar is a
more in depth schedule of all school events.
Please note that the school calendar is subject
to change.
School Bus
The situation with the small school bus is still
under investigation and we are waiting to hear
from our insurance company before deciding
our next steps. In the meantime, we still have
the larger bus that we will use to transport the
Ft. Lupton families and are actively searching
for a bus driver. If you know of anyone inter-
ested in this part-time position, please have
them contact Mrs. Bornhoft.
Language History Questionnaire
In order to best serve our students, we are
asking each family to fill out the Language
History Questionnaire for each child attending
St. Mary Catholic School. This questionnaire
will help us to identify students that may bene-
fit from support services from our staff and
may allow our school to receive Title funds.
These Title funds help to provide extra help
and resources for these students. You can
either mail this to the school, or return it with
your child on the first day of school. Thank
you for taking the time to fill this out.

It is time to start thinking about St. Mary Band
My name is Jeffrey Davis, I am your new (old) band director. I taught at St. Mary School from 2009 –
2013. Now I am back.
I hope you had a great summer, and I know, there is still summer left. BUT, this is the time to find that
band instrument, open the case and play some beautiful notes to get ready for the school year. You
might need to get something fixed, or maybe some new reeds. Also, look around for those band books.
Play last year’s solo just for fun. Play the theme from the new Star Wars movie.
NEVER BEEN IN BAND? I have the deal for you!
On Tuesday & Thursday, Aug. 28 & 30. This is open to 4
th – 8
th Graders
Come to the St. Mary Music Room, from 3:35 to 4:20 pm. I will have Woodwinds, Brass and
Percussion instruments available for YOU TO TRY with the help of some experts on those
instruments. You can TRY OUT any or all of the instruments to see which one you want to play.
Parents, I will be available for questions about band.
If you want to TRY instruments but can’t come at that time, contact me and we will setup a time.
PARENTS: You can Rent to Own instruments at our local music store, Music Depot or you can go
out of town. Boomer Music in Ft. Collins is excellent. If you decide to use an instrument from a
relative, friend, or garage sale, it is best to have it checked out by a professional (music store) to make
sure it is ready to play. A broken instrument just discourages the student.
5th
– 8th
Graders – If you want to learn an instrument you will start in Cherub
(Beginning) Band, but I will move you up to Angel (Advanced Band) as soon as you
are ready.
“I Was In Band, but I haven’t been in for a year or longer.”
If This is You -- COME BACK!! You can sign up for Angel Band, the weekly lessons will catch you up. Give it another try.
The weekly band schedule and private lessons will remain the same as in past years. More Band
information will be in the next newsletter; including band start dates, concert dates, supplies needed,
books, lesson fees, etc. Please contact me with questions or concerns.
