WELLBEING

Healthy Habits At St Oliver’s over past weeks we have noted a higher percentage of absences caused by the cold and wet conditions and many viral infections. All of our classes are being reminded of basic hygiene practices including the importance of all children washing their hands when using the toilets. If your child is unwell the best place for him/her is at home until he/she is better. We are all looking forward to the warmer weather that spring promises in the next few weeks. In the meantime stay warm and keep well.

Have a good week Libby Sheedy

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Learning the Multiplication Facts (times tables) Year 3 – 6 Parent Information Session

Dear Parents, By now you have probably seen the enthusiasm your children are displaying for learning their Multiplication facts. Since we have introduced the program at our school we have had a huge number of children learning their multiplication facts and they are now using the strategies taught, to assist them in all aspects of their maths work. We would like to continue to encourage this excitement for learning maths by inviting you to attend a parent information session on Tuesday 22nd August at 3.35 in the Upstairs Computer Lab. It will be a hands on session for parents, showing you the strategies used to learn Multiplication Facts and providing you with valuable information on how you can continue to support your child’s learning at home. In order for us to allocate you a computer at the session we will need you to let us know if you are able to attend. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like to attend this session. Really looking forward to seeing you there. Jaki O’Halloran

ITALIAN

Each Senior class has had the opportunity to create a delicious dish with the bok choy from our garden. The students have worked cooperatively in Italian class and shared their meal at lunch time. It has been a great success. In the next few weeks, the Middles with have the same opportunity. I will be contacting those parents who put their names down to assist with cooking in the next week or so. Congratulations to the grade 6 finalists who went to Penola College a few weeks ago to recite their poem for the Regional Italian poetry competition. Well done Sarah Lazzaro, Ruby Prattico, Cristina Viggiano, Sienna Romeo and Lara Cutajar on all your hard work. I am very proud of you all. Thank you to Amanda Prattico for driving the students on the day. An even bigger congratulations goes to Sarah Lazzaro who came 2nd overall in the Regional competition. What a result!! Trish Franzoni will be presenting the awards at a Wednesday assembly shortly. Date yet to be finalised. Thank you to all the families who have donated seeds or seedlings for our garden. Thank you those who donated vouchers and other great things for our garden. It is greatly appreciated! Also a very big thank you to KMART Broadmeadows and to Target Airport West who kindly donated $50 and $25 gifts cards. These will go towards setting up our kitchen with all the utensils and cooking equipment we need to make delicious food from our garden. If you know of any other business who would like to assist us, please contact me via email on: [email protected] Alternatively you can come and see me after school on a Monday or Tuesday. Many thanks Mrs Mazzarella

Our weekly recap As you may know, the things we do at OSHC are a mixture of staff-initiated activities and student-initiated activities. One of the craft activities initiated by a staff member was beautiful 3D flowers and cardboard houses. We also turn our plain blue tack into different colors by using textures. One of the spontaneous crafts that emerged from the children was a cardboard ‘Time Machine’ created by girls! Also children build lots of beautiful things with lego such as rob lox, a ship, animals and shields. Physical play included ‘Line/Memory Tag’, ‘Home 44’, adventure playground favourite ‘Shark Tiggy’, and of course footy. In BSC children made a project on healthy eating. They drew healthy and unhealthy food and made a poster to encourage children to eat healthy food. It was great to see them working as a team.
