Got a Trade Got it Made, Big Bus Tour

Several of Rosehill's senior students who are interested in trades careers were invited to take part in the "Got a Trade Got it Made, Big Bus Tour" that took place on Wednesday the 6th of July. It was a great day and there was so much to see. We were taken on a tour of Industry, we were spoken to by a range of industry professionals and got some fantastic insight into what to expect and how to get into a range of trade careers pathways.

Mau RākauKo te Ihi, ko te Wehi, ko te Wana, Mauri ora e!

Excitement, engagement and energy welcomed the launching of the Mau Rākau Program at Pukeroihi (Rosehill College) this term. The program is delivered by Matua Chris Wiremu and Matua Hemani who are both qualified Instructors from Te Whare Tū Tauā o Aotearoa. This māori initiative is to actively engage akona (students) in their learning in developing Transferable Skills across the curriculum. The Mau Rākau Program is currently being implemented into the Year 10 Te Reo Māori subject classes until the end of this year in ‘Pilot’ form.

The program enables students to gain Level 1 to Level 3 credits in Years 10 to Year 13. We envisage this kaupapa (topic) to increase its capacity throughout the kura (school) in the future and raise not only māori student achievement but achievement for all akona (students) at Pukeroihi (Rosehill College). Karawhuia! (Give it heaps).

Funding to Boost Employment Opportunities for Papakura YouthThe Hugh Green Foundation has committed to supporting youth employment initiatives across Auckland, renewing its support of Auckland Council’s Youth Connections project.

Youth Connections programme manager, Jacqui Dillon, says the Trust has committed $300,000 over the next three years, focusing on work to improve youth employment opportunities within the Papakura community.

“We’re delighted that our partnership with the Hugh Green Foundation will continue. Our organisations share a commitment to ensuring young Aucklanders have access to quality education and employment opportunities, enabling them to reach their full potential and become active contributors to the community.”

The Hugh Green Foundation and Youth Connections in Papakura, have worked together since 2013, guided by their shared goal of having all youth meaningfully engaged in education, employment or training.

A key focus of the partnership has been building strong pathways for young people from education into employment, through collaboration with other organisations across relevant sectors, including business, iwi, government and education.

“With the Auckland Youth Employer Pledge initiative now having exceeded its target of 50 pledge partners, we have the opportunity to engage even more closely with the business community and develop these pathways even further, which is a really exciting prospect,” says Ms Dillon.

Papakura Local Board youth portfolio lead, Katrina Winn, says Youth Connections is making a real difference in their community.

“Through our Youth Connections programme we have been able to make a big impact supporting our young people to get jobs. One particular success story has been driver licensing programmes. Many jobs today require a driver’s licence but there can be many barriers to young people obtaining one.

“We have successfully partnered with different organisations to establish a community driver-mentoring programme, and we have also worked with Papakura High School and Rosehill College to help students gain their drivers licences. Through these excellent programmes we’ve been able to support around 150 young people to get learners licences,” she says.

The Papakura Local Board is now focused on helping young people successfully transition through education into employment.

Youth Connections is an initiative based in 10 local boards across Auckland, including the Papakura Local Board area.

Studyit Studyit is an online service that supports level 1 to level 3 NCEA and scholarship students in the lead up to their final external exams. Achievement standards for maths, science, and English have been repackaged specifically for students and include detailed explanations and links to revision material. Through Studyit forums students can ask questions and get support from teachers and other students after school, in the weekend or the holidays. The forums are moderated by other students and mentors. Mentors are all trained secondary teachers.

Rainbows End Sponsor! The wonderful Rainbows End are our Premier Netball Girls’ sponsor for the 2016 UNISS Tournament which is really awesome as it will help our girls come together as a team to beat next term!

What else is awesome is the 'Ignite the Nights' night rides series that will be held over the next three Saturdays at Rainbows End until 11pm! This is a great event for teenagers as it is an alcohol free event with live entertainment to complement the fun-filled rides and attractions. Head on over to the Rainbows End website for ticket information!

Badminton The Badminton D grade team played this week with the rippers playing James Cook. Our players found them taller and stronger with too much power for our beginner’s team. The highlight of the match however was Toni Ballawan and Franja Soriano winning their doubles game.

James Cook 5, Rose rippers 1.

Football 1st XI GirlsThe Rosehill Football 1st XI girls had a much better game this week against what was a strong and feisty Pakuranga side a few weeks back. The final result was a nil all draw but it was great to see the girls going out onto the field with great team spirit and not allowing the previous result to intimidate or effect this games performance. The girls worked well and hard to defend against Pakuranga preventing them from scoring any goals so congratulations girls!

Basketball U15 BoysThis week our boys found themselves up against Waiuku and true to form Rosehill showed they were there to play a game of Basketball. Rosehill had good game plans and were more comfortable on the court, with only a few minor pass off mishaps.

1st half belonged to our boys in every sense, court and ball domination ,and as hard as Waiuku tried it was only Rosehill on the scoreboard at half time.

2nd half Waiuku upped their game and got more ball time and put themselves on the scoreboard. But by this stage it really didn’t matter as the gap was too vast. Despite this, Waiuku still displayed great sportsmanship that they should be proud of.

It is clear to see how Rosehill U15 Boys are continuing to improve their games with every week and they should be proud of themselves. Once again the team remains undefeated in week 8!

ROSEHILL 76 – 02 WAIUKU

Tournament WeekTournament week is fast approaching and will be in Week 6 next term. Most of our premier teams will be attending at various venues and we can’t wait to see how they all go against different levels of competition! The students who are attending should see their Tournament fee deposits on their school accounts and these will need to be paid before the end of the holiday break. If parents/caregivers have any questions then please feel free to contact the Sports Office.
