JAPAN

Sharra Martin, Senior College Science Teacher, has been chosen as one of three Australian Science Teachers to

attend a Science study program in Japan in September. The Australian Science Teachers Association has

selected Sharra to be part of a delegation of teachers to Japan for a week-long immersion in Japanese education and culture. One of the

objectives is for teachers to experience the way Science is taught in one of the most innovation-focused countries in

the world by visiting a Japanese Super Science School. Tours of Sony, the

Miraikan Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, and the Japan

Aerospace Exploration Agency are included.

The program allows Science teachers to travel to Japan to observe Japanese

science lessons, teach Japanese students (through an interpreter) and

engage in discussions on Science education with Japanese educators

from a diverse range of schools. Sharra's experience will support the

Australian Curriculum's requirement of developing understanding and skills

relating to Asia.

Australian National Anthem. Her rendition was very well received, and I congratulate her on her brilliant performance. Well done Melody!

India@Mindil 2015 India@Mindil, an annual Darwin Community dry season event, attracted over 12,000 people this year. Our Junior Songsters Choir was ably conducted by Leanne Bakker and accompanied on the keyboard by Kirsty McCallum. The Choir looked fantastic in their choir uniform, complete with a bright sequin blue vest. Their rendition of the Australian National Anthem received a very loud and spontaneous applause from the milling crowds. Well done Songsters! Our sincere thanks go to Leanne Bakker for making this happen, and for conducting on the afternoon. Thanks also to Mrs McCallum for accompanying on the keyboard.

Our school has a strong presence in several community events and it is a great acknowledgement to have our talented students invited to perform at top events.

Jaya Srinivas Assistant Principal Preschool to Year 12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) - Term 3 All Transition to Year 5 class teachers have developed plans for a heightened focus in Science for Term 3. Within varied Australian Curriculum Science topics, all students will participate in multiple investigations; developing skills in scientific thinking, specific vocabulary development and recording results using a specified method. We have made links with the Bureau of Meteorology, inviting a guest speaker, Jackson Brown, to attend assembly and address an interested group of students at a follow-up ‘press conference’. Class teachers are very keen to hear from any parent or family

member who may work or study in any field of Science and Engineering. Students would benefit from hearing about the application of science skills in the workplace. Our term will culminate in a Junior School Science Fair where each student’s experimentation skills will be on show for peers and families to view. Following the fair, selected students will enter into the NT Young Scientist Award.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Program The Junior School is participating in the commercially advertised Earn and Learn rewards program. Families are asked to collect Woolworths stickers, offered in-store for every $10 spent. Sticker sheets filled with 60 stickers can be placed in specified Essington boxes at Nightcliff Woolworths or at school in the Education Administration office (or simply hand to class teachers). We will later redeem points to order educational resources such as outdoor and sporting equipment, games and puzzles, Lego and developmental play items. We appreciate the strong interest already expressed in this valuable program.

Louise Hand Assistant Principal Junior School

From the Junior School Coordinators We are well and truly back into the swing of things with a very busy full week. Darwin Show Congratulations to all our students who had Art and Craft items entered into the Royal Darwin Show. We had an outstanding number of pieces entered and displayed at the Show. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program This term in the Junior School we are focusing on our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. All classes across Transition to Year 5 are heavily involved in hands-on Science program, with classroom teachers directing many inquisitive practical science experiments. It is our hope to create some fabulous and interesting discoveries. We plan to share these with parents and friends at the end of term in our open classroom Science Fair. Our Year 5 students will also be using the Middle School Science Lab for a weekly Science lesson.

The Territory’s Young Scientist Awards are on again this year. With a Science focus in the Junior School, we are hoping to have some fantastic practical investigations to enter. We will also be doing the Recycled Bugs again this year. Start collecting your household recyclables. Entries are due at the end of the term so stay tuned for further information. On Friday 8th August, Mr Jackson Browne, a Meteorologist with Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), attended our Junior School Assembly. Mr Browne and our Junior School have now developed a partnership as our CSIRO Mathematician and Scientist in Schools Program. After Assembly Mr Browne held a mini ‘press conference’ for our interested Junior School STEM students. Participating students prepared questions to ask Mr Browne about his very interesting job. Tournament of Minds We have been so pleased with the level of interest in Tournament of Minds this year. We have five junior teams entered into this creative extension program across Year 5 and Year 6. Tournament of Minds is a stimulating challenge during which students work in teams across year levels to develop a creative response to a clearly defined problem in their chosen discipline. Students extend their lateral thinking and problem-solving skills as they research the set topic and come up with a unique solution. This year the topics are Maths and Engineering and Social Sciences. Tournament Day or NT Regional Finals Day is on Saturday 5th

St John’s First Aid in Schools Program As part of our Health Education curriculum this term, Transition to Year 5 students participated in a St John Ambulance Australia classroom presentation this week. Each class group attended a very informative session in our brand new upstairs classrooms. Students learnt some very important practical first aid tips and even had a go at helping someone who needed first aid in role play situations. We would like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers and staff at St John’s Ambulance Australia for providing us with the fun and informative opportunity. Ebony Burns Acting Junior School Coordinator We recently welcomed our Preschool families at our Welcome BBQ. It was a great way for our families and students to get to know one another. A huge Thank you to our amazing staff for their preparation for the evening, and to the wonderful parents, and grandparents, who helped as chefs, face painters and artists. This week, the Transition unit hosted a family morning tea. It was wonderful to see so many of our families attend and enjoy the time spent with the Transition community. We look forward to hosting future family friendly events. Thank you to our families, Ms Jazmin, our Transition Music teacher, and our class teachers for supporting the occasion. Renee Schultz Junior School Coordinator Early Childhood Programs

Early Learning Notices Preschool All Preschool classes have been discussing what they did on the long weekend. We also discovered that our tomatoes in the vegetable garden are growing well, and now we are just waiting for them to turn red before we can use them in our cooking.

Just a friendly reminder to please ensure all children bring three pieces of fruit or a healthy snack, eg biscuits/crackers, cheese sticks, cut up celery or carrot sticks to share, per week. Children also require, a broad brimmed hat, T-shirt that covers their shoulders for outdoor play, and a water bottle every day. Could all parents please ensure that any items bought to Preschool, eg hats, water bottles and clothing are clearly labelled with the child’s name on them. In the event you have an item go missing, please see your child’s teacher or the lost property boxes in the classrooms. On Wednesdays, Preschool has Library, so please ensure your child has a Library bag to borrow books. Our Thank you this week goes to: Preschool 1: Sarah - Tate’s Mum for being the Mystery Reader. Preschool 3: Tamara – Zoe’s Mum, and Zylia – Aidan’s Mum. Miss Kristy and Miss Nerida and the Preschool Team

Junior School Notices Pre-Transition A Smith This week the children in Transition A have continued learning single sounds and letter names through the Jolly Phonics Program. They are speeding

along, learning a sound a day and developing skills in letter formation. In Numeracy, the focus has been shapes and numbers. The children pulled 2D shapes out of a bag, and went on a shape hunt around the classroom. The children are focusing on numbers ‘0 to10’ and linking numerals to quantities using counters other concrete objects. This week, we started brainstorming ideas about plants, and the children were eager to contribute information they knew about plants, and came up with some great questions about plants and living things to discover this term. Lucy Smith Transition C Karaoulias We have had a fabulous couple of weeks settling into the new term and our new classroom.

In Mathematics, the children did a wonderful job using their ‘tens’ frame to add two groups of counters together to make an addition sum. The children are working effectively, and getting better at writing out equations. Our concept focus at the moment for Mathematics is 'time'.

In Science, our term focus is Physical Science. The children have been

Students learning First Aid at one of the St John Ambulance presentations.

In Health, we have been learning about how being 'active' helps our body, mind, and emotional state keep healthy. Thank you to all our lovely parents who were able to attend the Transition Morning Tea on Wednesday. Congratulations to Johanna, Adam, and Greta for receiving a Merit Award in Week 2. Congratulations to Shamaita, Bridie, and Charli for receiving a Merit Award this week at Assembly. Do not forget to put your names up on the Fete roster on the white board outside the classroom. Christine Karaolias Year 1C Mizon Another short week but we are still working hard! Our phonemes this week are “ou” and “ow”. They both make the same sound so we are taking part in lots of activities to help us learn how to choose the correct spelling. In English, we are learning how to plan and write stories based on familiar texts. Our work will be on display in the classroom soon so keep an eye out for it. In Mathematics, we are learning how to measure in centimetres, and will have a morning challenge set up as we come into school this week to practise our skills. We are discovering the different types of families we have in History. As a cross-curricular link, we are going to make class graphs to display our information. We will conduct an experiment in Science to find out about changing states, and start to learn some new scientific languages. Please sign up to help out with our class stall at the Fete. The list is on the classroom door. Victoria Mizon Year 2A Howe Although I do not feel we have had many days at school yet, Term 3 seems to be flying! We have got pretty comfortable with our Term topics, including learning why the Chinese came to Darwin. We have also been

approved for an excursion to the Chinese Temple and Museum which is coming up in Week 5. I will be asking parents to come and join us on this excursion to assist. We are learning a lot about reduce, reuse and recycle as part of our Health topic, and have started some great experiments in Science involving earth’s natural resources. Our focus this term is to be able to write up a science investigation. In Mathematics, we have been focusing on mental addition and subtraction strategies. This week, students had the opportunity to write a rhyming poem, and there were some fantastic ones written. Hannah Scott wrote an excellent three verse poem on reduce, reuse and recycling, and Audrey Wells-Corner has started a humorous rhyming poem about dogs recycling. I have been very impressed by the amount of effort students have been putting into completing Mathletics and Spellodrome each week. I am beginning to set the next week’s activities on the Friday so that students can complete Mathletics and Spellodrome over the weekend. This can also be a good introduction to learn the sound of the week before arriving at school on Monday. Just a reminder that the Fete is not far away, and I am still chasing up donations and helpers for the day. Maddie Howe Year 2C Hartley It is Week 3 already. Just a reminder to start sending in chocolate blocks/ bars/ bags for our chocolate toss stall, or donate $10 if this is easier. We can never have too much chocolate! Also there is a book donation box in my classroom if you wish to donate any books to the Fete. It has been wonderful seeing all the tasks completed so far for homework. Please try and attempt even ONE every week. Do not forget to check out EduKite for more information on classroom activities. Cristina Hartley

Year 2D Scaturchio Week 3 has been another short but busy week in 2D! The class has enjoyed beginning our ongoing Scientific investigation. We will be testing if different water qualities affect the growth of a bean. The students have planted a control bean and a variable bean, and we will be observing the growth of the beans over the next four weeks. You are invited to pop into the classroom to have a look at our experiments, and our Science and Literacy walls where some of the wonderful poetry the students are writing and our class inquiries are displayed. Students are reminded to complete their nightly homework tasks on Reading Eggs, Mathletics, and Spellodrome. Please send me an email or pop in to see me if you have any trouble logging in, or if you have any questions. Well done to Aiden Cluney for being our Science Super Star this week, and to Stanley Phillips for being the Week 3 Class Super Star! Congratulations to Amelie Geddes and Nathan O’Sullivan for receiving Merit Awards this week. Susannah Scaturchio Year 3B McGregor We have had another busy week in Class 3B. Although it was a short week, we still managed to pack in lots of important learning. During Writing, we finished our first Science experiment procedure where we compared two candles, one that was melted and one that had not been melted. We are becoming familiar with the scientific report language such as identifying hypotheses, and writing discussions and conclusions. Our Mathematics focus has continued to be on subtraction with trading and regrouping. We have been doing this with four digit numbers which can sometimes be tricky, but with lots of practise through classwork and homework, everyone is getting the hang of the process.

Year 4C O’Connor This week we have continued with discussions on colonisation of

Australia (the First Fleet), and the

properties of materials. The children

have designed a ‘convict bag’, and stated reasons why they have used

particular materials in their bags. They

have considered the strength of the

bag and whether it would need to be waterproof. Some have decided that

their bags could be multi-purpose and

also act as a pillow. It will be interesting to see the completed bag

and to test it during class orals.

The School Fete is only weeks away (22nd August). We are still in need of

parent helpers from 11:00am, as well

as donations for our stall. If you have

any items which you no longer need or want, please feel free to bring them in

In English, we have looked at Shakespeare’s use of language, sentence structure, puns, and even insults! In Science, we have continued with our projects for the Science Fair, and are now at a stage where our experiments are complete and are writing up our discussions. In Geography, we started looking at a ‘Place and Liveability’, and discussed why we think Darwin is such a great place to live from a geographer’s perspective. Students are asked to make sure they have signed up for a time to help out at the 6A Fete stall. We still have a few time slots available. A roster is on the wall just inside the classroom door. I will send home a copy of students’ time allocations next week. A reminder that student diaries are to be brought to school every day. These are so useful in helping to organise work commitments effectively. I sign diaries once a week, and ask that parents please do the same. Well done again on another fantastic week! Gemma Keirl Year 6B Materazzo What a fantastic week we have had coming back after the long weekend. We were straight into our studies, heavily focusing on ensuring our experiments and scientific reports are well on the way in preparation for the Science Fair. Continuing with the topic of 'light', we ventured into the Science Laboratory for some educational, but extremely fun, hands-on science tasks: looking at why the sky is blue

AusTurtle Assistant - Lilly Mason

During the recent July mid-year break, Lilly Mason (Year 9) spent a week on Bare Sand Island with AusTurtle turtle researchers working as a volunteer research assistant. Lilly was involved in the measuring of nesting turtles on the beach, tagging turtles, and counting turtle hatchlings. She also assisted researchers on night shifts monitoring motion activated cameras that recorded the predatory behaviour of sea birds at night on turtle hatchlings as they made their way down the beach. Lilly camped on the island with researchers for the week, and relied on desalination equipment to distil their water. We are pleased to be able to acknowledge Lilly's work with a Professor Graham Webb Science Excellence Award.

and our sunsets are red, why we can see a rainbow in bubbles, and the creation and logic behind shadows.

In English, it has all been about Shakespearean language, and recognising how many sayings are still with us today: “a sorry sight”, “good riddance”, and “seen better days” are but a few. We created a court room environment, and delved further with a look at plagiarism and how Shakespeare attempted to protect his valuable writings. In Geography we have moved on to liveability. We will be investigating why we live where we do, and the different criteria that is considered. In Mathematics, we are continuing to master Algebra, and the students are now proficient at substituting values into equations and working through complex worded problems within a group. As a whole class, we voted for our Student Representative Council representatives this week, and they will be announced at next week’s Assembly. The students bravely stood in front of their peers and delivered their speeches. Well done to Ewan Spring for his awesome PowerPoint presentation. This Friday, it is Jeans for Genes Day. Students are to wear their sports shirt, denim shorts or jeans, and their sports shoes. A $2 donation is required for charity. The 40 Hour Famine is also coming up, so if any students are keen to participate, they can collect the relevant information from Room 6B. Sara Materazzo Year 6C Nelson/Schilling We welcome two new students to our class this term: Ella Hoy and Bani Jalota.

The term has started to become very busy, with the short weeks and public holidays in the first few weeks behind us. It is now time to hit the ground running with all the learning that is planned for 6C.

In Science, we are finishing the Light Experiments this week. Ms Schilling is looking forward to seeing these all typed up ready to display at our Science Fair at the School Fete in a couple of weeks. If there are any parents that can volunteer a few hours to help with set up, or with running our class stall, please let me know.

In English, we are studying the life and works of William Shakespeare. We have looked at the famous Globe Theatre, and written about what it would have been like to experience a performance there. Our Geography studies have led us into exploring a variety of maps, and we have been looking at different communities and cultures. We have explored and contrasted the ways in which children live in a variety of countries. We will be exploring water scarcity and sustainability in coming weeks. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for The 40 Hour Famine to raise funds to fight global hunger. More information will be coming on this.

Year 6 is becoming more environmentally friendly. We are beginning to move towards an online homework system. Students’ weekly homework will be based around Spellodrome and Mathletics. The homework task sheets can be found on The Middle School Homework website http://www.freewebs.com/middleschoolhomework/year6.htm.

There are still a few students needing books, rulers, and other stationery to ensure they are organised and not wasting class time borrowing from others. Please check with your child and purchase equipment as soon as possible. Also, some students are forgetting fruit break and water bottles. Please remind your child to bring a water bottle and stay hydrated. Please note a change in contact details for Miss Nelson: email: [email protected] Neisha Schilling Year 6E Spring Welcome to Week 3 in 6E and again, students have been extremely busy with the work and assessment tasks set this term. In English, students have enjoyed analysing the spoken English used during Elizabethan England. In particular, the plethora of insults written into William Shakespeare’s plays. Each morning, a student selects an insult, which they must first comprehend and then deliver it to me. I would like to say that it is quite refreshing to be insulted on a daily basis. An example from ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ is: “You shall find there a man who is the abstract of all faults that all me follow.” In Mathematics, we are enhancing our understanding of Algebra, and have begun to explore linear equations. I am impressed with the effort students have put into this topic, and with the level of understanding shown. In Science, students have been working hard on their Science Fair projects. They have conducted their experiments, and are almost ready to construct their presentation boards. In Geography, we continue to look at maps and this week

students discovered how difficult it is to create a map of the school. Being able to visualise the entire campus and position it accurately onto a small grid using the correct scale is challenging. I would like to thank parents and students for their support with the School Fete, and I cannot wait to see both teachers and students being dunked. I would also like take this opportunity to thank Ms Megan Brown for donating $20 for me to be dunked four times. Well done 6E for all your hard work. Mark Spring

SUNFLOWERS FOR SALE

Senior College Art students have been busy creating a painting in the style of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”.

Each student painted a small canvas and then we recreated the whole by joining them together. This an

example of how the symbolism of several perspectives of one structure, recreated with different styles, come

together to create a new and dynamic synergy.

The painting will be our donation to the Fete. We will be offering it for sale by silent auction.

The painting is now hanging in the Senior College corridor and can be viewed during school hours.

General Notices Letters detailing all of these commitments have been provided to students from Year 3 upward this week. Please contact Ms Lisa with any queries. This term we are trialling a change in age groupings for our Dance Fitness class. Monday Dance Fitness now caters specifically for Preschool to Transition aged children from 3.00pm - 3.45pm. They buddy with our Year 6/7 contemporary dance class who are wonderful mentors. Wednesday Dance Fitness is for Year 1 to 2 students from 3.00pm - 3.45pm then Year 3-5 from 3.45pm - 4.30pm. Year 3-5 students are welcome to join in the first class to assist the younger students and to warm up for their class. Understandably this change does not suit all families, particularly those with siblings in the different age groupings, In this case please just choose which day suits best. We welcome a large number of new dance students to Middle School electives this term. An overview of the elective subject has been given to the students this week. They require a dance portfolio to store any handouts which will case their theory assessment work. Dance students require a leotard and tights for dance classes. Details for these are in the overview document. Students will receive an email invite to join ‘dropbox’ which is a document sharing program. All handouts, notes as well as videos of exercises and choreography will be accessible through dropbox.
