THE TITANIC!

On Friday, I had four amazing students ask to see me, to show me their huge model of the Titanic and research project they had completed. Needless to say I was incredibly impressed …. Even more so when I found out this was a project the students had undertaken independently. That is; it was not a class project. The students worked on their Titanic in their own time during the day, often after they had completed their class work. They worked in a team and all contributed equally in time and resources. The research they undertook was outstanding.

THE TITANIC cont ...

1/2CB - MRS CALLINAN & MRS BRAITHWAITE

What an exciting and busy term we have been having so far! All 1/2CB students have settled into our new school and class routines very well.

In English lessons, the students have been focusing on recounts and imaginative texts. They have written some interesting stories on their special moments. Please come in and read these stories that are displayed around the classroom.

In Mathematics, 1/2CB has been doing so much hands on learning. Recently the students were given a challenge to see who could make the longest chain. They were given 1 piece of A4 paper, a pair of scissors and a glue stick. There was a lot of brainstorming to see how they could get the longest chain. There was a definite buzz of brains working together to get the winning outcome.

Students have been looking at number patterns, challenging themselves to create patterns that are a little bit complex.

We have all had such a great start to the year! Please remember to keep reading every night and bring in your readers club cards!!

MUSIC - MRS BAIRD

Term 1 four classes have being enjoying learning about music in the music room. It has also been the place where the Hanwood Public School Choir meet and sing once a week. Our learning experiences have been greatly advanced buy the addition to the music room of Smartboard.

The children have been singing, playing the guitar, playing songs on the recorder, using percussion instruments, exploring the keyboards and using “cups” to accompany songs. The music room is a fun and educational place to visit!

5/6A - MISS AMARO

This term in 5/6A we have been busy getting ready for our Harmony Day exhibition. The students have been creating different models to represent what Harmony Day means to them. Our exhibition is fast approaching, falling on Friday 20th March in our school hall. We have also been practising our units of measurement, focusing on perimeter. We used different tools to measure different perimeters in our school. We became quite creative with some perimeters boundaries and enjoyed exploring! During our English unit this term, students have been engaging in lots of different texts that portray friendship and have analysed them using higher order answering for the comprehension questions involved.

GIRLS AFL OPPORTUNITY

There has been an exciting development in the area of Girls AFL this year with the formal introduction of Girls Representative AFL to schools via the Schools Sports Unit. The closing date for nominations for the trial is this Friday (March 13). This information is for talented female athletes in Years 5 & 6. Interested girls do not necessarily have to be playing AFL... children who are talented at Basketball, Netball, Touch Football, Rugby League and Rugby Union can easily (and quickly) transfer their skills to AFL. This trial will be held in Wagga Wagga on Thursday, 2nd April, with selected students attending a one day State Trial (playing against teams from South Coast All Schools, Metro East All Schools, Metro West All Schools, Hunter All Schools and North Coast and Inland All Schools). Last year in the pilot version of this sport we had a number of our girls attend trials and they selected in the Riverina Team. We have a number of girls in our region who play AFL, and also a number of talented female athletes who have the attributes to adapt to the game. Interested parents
