It was wonderful to see the ‘have a go’ attitude of the students re- gardless of their swimming ability and the determination to finish their events. To me this shows a real sense of spirit – congratulations! for Mr Auld 26 February

February 10 2016 February 10 2016 -- Term 1 Week 3Term 1 Week 3

From the Principal’s Desk There were many exhausted students and staff at the end of a very productive and settled full week of school. The week began on a high with 51 new Kindergarten students and their fami-lies joining us. We ended on a high with the induction of our school leaders, sports captains and SRC representatives. A real community based atmosphere was felt at this ceremony.

I continue to be overwhelmed by the care of school staff who continue to go above and be-yond to ensure the students feel a sense of safety and belonging. As both a leader of the school and parent of a little one starting school I cannot thank the Kindergarten staff enough for making the school transition such an enjoyable and easy process. They are on duty from the time they arrive until the end of the day most times without a break. They do this to ac-commodate the children in their new environment.

Friday’s Induction Ceremony was a lovely family orientated school event. The children who had nominated and been elected to take on leadership roles within the school were inducted into their new roles. It was a pleasure to be able to do an address on ‘What Leadership is’ which focussed very much on the importance on team work. Regardless of your role or title everyone is a leader in their own right. A nice touch to the morning was the involvement of parents and family members pinning on the badges and afterwards joining with the children for morning tea. Thank you to Mrs Fraser for her coordination of this assembly. I met with the school leaders and sports cap-tains and to-gether we signed their pledges. Con-gratulations to all of you I look forward to working with you all as we move through 2016.

The swimming carnival was a huge success thanks to the dedicated school staff that pulled together a competitive and fun day for the students. A huge thank you is extended to parents who assisted with setting up, time keeping and end of day pack up – a fantastic contribution to ensure a great day. Staff members were involved in varied activities during the day which kept children busy and engaged if they were not participating in events. Thank you to Ms Gra-ham for her coordination. It was wonderful to see the ‘have a go’ attitude of the students re-gardless of their swimming ability and the determination to finish their events. Champions: Logan Ward, Monique Gearside, Bailey Brown, Keelee Fraser, Wade Fra-ser, and Sophie Clark. Runners up: Ned Alexander, Madison Dobson, Lachlan Boy-ling, xxxxx, Lachlan Schroder and Maddy O’Leary

We welcome back Mrs Donna Dogger as 2016 permanent member of our staff and welcome new staff members Ms Brittanie Star and Ms Rhiannon Mitchell. Ms Star is currently teaching KD and also in the RFF role during term 1. Ms Mitchell is a temporary appointment in Stage 2 on 3/4M for the school year. We wish them well as they join our supportive team.

On Monday the new School Education Director, Toni MacDonald called in to say hello and introduce herself to school staff. Toni returns home, in a sense, with this role. Toni moved away from this area with various roles which have gained her broad experience. We look forward to working with Toni and learning from her. I had the pleasure of working with Toni in my early days of teaching at Lithgow Primary along with Ms Foster. Mrs Mac-Donald was impressed with the settled classrooms as she moved around the school and the friendliness of the staff and parents.

Tomorrow night, Thursday 11 February, ES1 and Stage 1 will hold their information evenings. You will be pro-vided with information about curriculum, programs, class structures, extra-curricular activities and have the op-portunity to ask questions. Stage 2 & Stage 3 are providing families with information letters. Should you require any further information please speak to the classroom teachers or stage supervisors. ES1 will be held from 6pm and Stage 1 from 7pm. It is also a good way to introduce yourself to the classroom teacher and Assistant Princi-pals as part of strengthening the partnership between home and school.

On Friday we will formally welcome our new Kinders with a ‘Welcome to school’ assembly. Students will be pro-vided with a certificate and school badge, they will also present a short item. It would wonderful to see family members in attendance as we welcome you also to our supportive school environment.

A general reminder about our morning ‘drop off zone’. This area of the school carpark is not for parking. In the morning it is to drop children off so they can safely exit the car and walk into the playground. Signs indicate the time this drop off zone is in place – thank you for your support with this.

I like to, when I can, share a nice story about our great little town and this is one from the weekend which you all can be proud of. We were having dinner at Black Gold on Saturday night and I had realised that Byron my middle son had exited outside. When I went to check on him he was playing with 2 boys from Sydney. They were with their dad, a Sydney based Lawyer, and were staying at the cabins to attend the 12 hour race in Bathurst. Byron had given them a run down on the history of where they were staying as the old Wallerawang School and I was pleased to know that he obviously listens to what he is being told sometimes. But what the man was very quick to tell me was that in a very short time in Wallerawang he had quickly identified with the friendliness of the people and the real sense of pride and belonging people had. Yes we certainly do – but how encouraging it is that the naked eye picks these things up.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you at different school events and activities.

Book Club Information

The first issue of Scholastic’s Book Club 2016 was sent home last week and is due back 17th February 2016.

Scholastic have made some changes so that now each child needs only one catalogue with the content carefully selected by a team of experts to satisfy a wide range of reading levels. You can order books by returning the or-der sheet, along with your payment to the school or you can order online ‘in the LOOP’ (Linked Online Ordering & Payment) system for Parents allowing you to place an order and make the necessary payment. Go to scholas-tic.com.au/LOOP for this option.

The school earns reward points for each order placed and these points are converted throughout the year to add new books to our school Library. Your books will be sent to school approximately 1 week after the closing date and then sent home with your child.

Lost Property & Clothing Pool Information

At the end of last year an enormous amount of school wear was left at school. It has been washed and packaged up and will be available over this term for pick up if you call at the office. After the end of term items will be added to the clothing pool and available for purchase at very minimal cost. Only 4 items were marked with children’s names and could be returned day 1 this year.

The Clothing Pool is very well stocked with items of school clothing in very good condition and range in price from $3 to $10 and in size from 4 to 16. These items can be purchased from the school office. *************************************** Glass Jars: Stage 3 are in need of clean glass jars with

lids for Art. Parents are asked to carefully wrap the jar so that it arrives at school safely or alternatively, a box will be in the office foyer for parents to leave the jars in.

Want to give your child a successful start at school?

(Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters - HIPPY)

HIPPY is a free, government funded program, for Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland de-signed to help parents prepare their children for school. Materials, guidance and home tutor support are all provided. The focus is on parents spending about 10 minutes a day do-ing the interactive activities with their children, to build pre-literacy and numeracy skills. HIPPY aims to further develop parents’ skills and confidence to better help their children prepare for a successful start at school. Employment opportunities are also available to parents. Centacare requires part time Home Tutors to assist with deliv-ering the HIPPY program. Centacare is accepting enrolments for 2016 from families liv-ing in the Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland areas with chil-dren in the year prior to starting school , usually around 4 years of age (Note: Children must turn 4 years on or before the 31st July 2016). Interested parents / caregivers can contact Hippy Bowenfels on telephone: 6352 4868 or mobile 0409 362 663 or email [email protected]

HIPPY Bowenfels is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education through the Home Interaction

Program for Parents and Youngsters.
