FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I hope that all the mothers in our school community had a lovely Mother’s Day. Our P&C certainly helped our students to remember their mum by organising an outstanding Mother’s Day stall on Thursday. Thank you to the P&C for this, their first fundraiser of the year.

Congratulations to the large number of students who represented our school at the District Cross Country at Bowraville on Friday. It is always a bit of an eye opener when they discover they are running through a farm and maybe through some cow pats - I’m sure it makes them go faster!! A team of 19 will now progress to the Zone Cross Country event in Sawtell on Friday, 22 May. Miss Scott and the School Choir will be entertaining a group of residents from the RSL Day Club at the Golf Club today. I know that this will be an equally enjoyable time for all concerned as the audience get to listen to the these beautiful voices and the choir has the opportunity to perform. matters” is appreciated. Let’s continue working together to improve student attendance. Over the next fortnight all classes will focus on the Core Value of FAIRNESS. To our younger students this could mean ~ playing by the rules; treating others the way you want to be treated; taking turns; sharing; listening; telling the truth. In addition older students might consider ~treating people fairly; everyone has the same chance; considering all of the facts in a situation before making a decision; use the same rules for everyone; don’t blame others for your mistakes; think about how your actions will affect others and listen closely to others and try to understand what they are feeling and saying. This could be an interesting conversation starter over dinner one night this week. Have a great week. Elizabeth Mulligan, Rel Principal

Voluntary School Contributions What are Voluntary School Contributions? Parents in Public Schools are encouraged to pay voluntary contributions which help us to cover costs which are necessary to run our school. These fees help us to pay for paper, exercise books, pencils and general resources needed to ensure the excellent standard of education we provide at Bellingen Public School is sustainable.

Your contribution is crucial - if each family made this contribution it could mean as much as $12,000. Families with 3 or more children attending our school need only pay for the first 2 children. Invoices will be posted out soon.

Our Voluntary School Contribution is only $44 per student.

If you pay this contribution before Friday, 20th May you will go in the draw to win a fantastic family holiday for a whole week at Valla Beach Resort or 2 x $100 Horse riding vouchers

Thank you to those parents that have already paid their voluntary contributions, they will automatically be entered into the draw.

LOST PROPERTY

Students and families are reminded that all clothing and lunch containers need to be clearly marked with your childs name. All unmarked uniforms will be washed and resold through the uniform shop. Non school uniforms and lunch containers that are unmarked are sent to the

Op Shop.

HABITS OF MIND INFORMATION SESSION FOR PARENTS

The Habits of Mind is a set of habits used to develop and strengthen the students’ skills as a successful learner. These skills are all beneficial throughout school and adult life, and are based on problem solving, interactions with others and creativity. I will be conducting a Habits of Mind information session for parents in 5/6O classroom on Thursday May 19 from 6 – 7.30pm. This session will introduce parents to the philosophy behind the Habits of Mind, and the way the Habits are used in the classroom. All interested parents are welcome to attend! Denise Head

Bellingen Public School P & C meet on the first Monday of the month.

The next meeting will be Monday, 6 June in the Library starting at 7pm.

All Parents/Carers welcome.

STEWART HOUSE Stewart House needs around $2.9 million each year to operate at capacity. The department and the NSW Teachers Federation have both recognised Stewart House as public education's charity of choice. Stewart House envelopes were given out to the eldest child last term and are due back on Friday, 13 May. By making a minimum donation of $2 you have the chance to make a difference in children’s lives and go in the draw to win a $4000 holiday. Additional envelopes are available from the office. Thank you for your support.

CANTEEN NEWS

As anyone with a calendar will know, this Friday is the 13th. Of course no one in the canteen holds to any of the superstitious claptrap associated with this date but why take any chances. Everyone , including Tamworth readers, can feel secure in the knowledge that there will be no black cats (or animals of any colour) allowed in the canteen on this day. This is the only concession made to this irrational but deep-seated belief in the magical effects of the number 13 and the likelihood of any bad luck resulting from its arbitrary allocation to a particular day of the week. Therefore there is no reason to think that the selection of weekly special was made because it was easy and safe. After all what could go wrong with shepherd’s pie and peas? Yes, this week’s special is shepherd’s pie and peas and as usual the special will be available Thursday and Friday only and a the safe and fortunate promoting price of $3.50 or $5.00 with a drink Please stay safe on Friday and watch out for ladders and mirrors, your children to a better education, Eddy Vardabasso Canteen Supervisor

PEER SUPPORT

Students participated in the first Peer Support session on Wednesday last week. In honour of Stars Wars Day, “May the Fourth”, students needed to work together and create costumes inspired by the Stars Wars Movie. Participation and engagement in this activity was extremely high. Our stage 3 leaders did an outstanding job.

District Cross Country

Congratulations to all students who attended District Cross Country, as usual all students were great ambassadors for their school cheering and supporting each other.
