The campus enjoyed a fantastic day on Friday as we celebrated the Japanese culture and
language. All our students participated in a variety of activities that represented and
encapsulated a feature of Japanese language and culture. From painting to using
chopsticks and through to art and craft, the students were given an opportunity to celebrate
the language and culture that they study at Riverton primary Campus. Thank you so much
to our sensei, Terrena Hall, who worked so hard to organise, coordinate and implement the
day, marshalling resources from all over the place, with guest presenters and of course our
wonderful staff members who contributed. Congratulations to the students and thanks to
everyone involved.
I am sad to announce that Mr Brooks. our physical education specialist who is currently on
Long Service Leave, has just been appointed as the foundation Physical Education teacher
at Aveley North Primary School. It is a brand new school that is located very close to home
for Mr Brooks, and with a new baby in the family, the timing couldn’t be better. Whilst we are
sad to see him leave, we wish him all the best and understand that his family and his future
is paramount. On behalf of everyone at the campus, I would like to acknowledge and thank
Mr Brooks for all his hard work and commitment to our campus, and to recognise the huge
impact both he and his programs have had at Riverton. Current processes are now
underway to secure a new teacher for that role.
Please note that we have the final Junior Assembly at school on Friday with the Pre Primary
students performing for us. The assembly will begin at 9.00am in the Covered Assembly
Area and I look forward to seeing a number of parents and family members at the event.
Our junior basketball teams represented Riverton in the state championships held at the
Bendat Centre in Floreat Park on Wednesday. Both teams performed really well, with the
students playing enthusiastically and displaying a high level of skills. I was lucky enough to
watch some games and was impressed with all the players’ attempts to do the “team” things
and help each other. It was a long, tiring but enjoyable day and the students can be justly
proud of their efforts. Thank you to those parents who were able to attend and thank you to
Mrs London and her team of coaches who organised and led the teams.

December – Red ball tennis competition
STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Congratulations to both participating teams at the State basketball tournament. It was a huge achievement for Riverton with 2 teams qualifying and both teams performed admirably. We didn’t get our desired result but more importantly it was a great learning opportunity for the students and from speaking to a number of the students, it sounds like they had a great time. REDBALL TENNIS COMPETITION (HOPMAN CUP) - 27/11/18 This week training will be increased for those interested in the Hopman Cup tennis. We urge students, if they want to come, that they need to attend trainings or notify Mrs London or Mr T that they can’t make it for obvious reasons (eg Rivos got talent performers). Students will be selected on participation and attendance then if there are still positions available others may get asked to play. Trainings will be on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday lunch times. The Red ball competition is being held on the 6
December 2018.
Thank you to the students in year 3 and 4, who participated in our first try outs for the Redball Tennis Tournament. I was a little bit disappointed to get 26 students to our first training session when 72 students put forward an expression of interest. Due to the high number of interest students we registered several different teams and will be looking for additional players to make it to the second session to make up the missing numbers. Kane Tomasevich PE Specialist
Finals (if qualified) in the covered assembly area at lunch everyone welcome.

Just like the song words, “I think we’re turning Japanese, turning Japanese I really think so,” Riverton PS and ESC turned Japanese for a day last Friday. Students thoroughly enjoyed a day of Japanese arts, crafts, music, dance, games, costumes and food. 20 teams were created and included several students from each year level. These teams were named after various Japanese cartoon characters or icons, such as Pikachu, Doraemon, karate kids and samurai. The Year 6s blossomed with their responsibility of following a personalised timetable and room locations as well as looking after the younger students. All students enjoyed working with and helping students from other classes, even making new friends along the way, as well as the range of amazing activities. Special guest Sanny Ang, an origami expert, and his offsider conducted Origami Magic workshops with more than 300 students. Whittle Sensei from Yuluma PS teamed up with Hitomi Chong to make friendship folding fans with at least 150 students. Taiko drumming, water calligraphy, kanji playdough, traditional toys, chopstick challenges, pipecleaner karate dolls, sumo wrestling, quiz show challenges, manga drawing, lanterns, onigiri riceballs, kirigami drink coasters, Butoh dancing, lanterns, hachimaki headbands, tamaire and bowling games were some of the popular activities. Sensei would like to express her gratitude to the other teachers and education assistants who supported the activities in each location, the P & C parents who helped with the kakigoori (snow cone) shop at both recess and lunch time as well as all the people who assisted Kyoko Seta in the canteen with the special obento lunch orders. The day would not have been such a success without all of their support. Doumo arigatou gozaimashita
