Returning to School in 2018 It is fast becoming that time of year when we need to start planning our classes for next year. If you know that your child will NOT be returning to our school next year or if you will be taking an extended break over Christmas and not returning before the first day of school, please fill in the attached form. Enjoy your holiday! Kate Pugh Principal

KH REPORT KH have been making excellent progress in many areas

over the past 4 weeks.

When writing, the children are keen to sound out words and remember to spell tricky words in their sentences. We are getting very good at our spelling and dictation too. This is thanks to the great support of reading and jolly phonics activities from the classroom and the work completed at home. Well done KH and thank you to the families for your great support!

Our maths strategies are greatly improving and it is wonderful to see the amount of “light bulb” moments many students have experienced this term.

We are currently enjoying the design and construction of our community for our Critical and Creative Thinking project. Thank you KH parents for donating all the recycled goods for the students to use.

The end of term is near and parents are invited to help with our Term 4 literacy group program on Wednesday and Thursday mornings (9am to 10.15am). Please let me know if you are interested in working with the children. There is an option for a maximum of 2 parents to also read to children in our Wednesday Afternoon reading sessions (2.30pm to 2.55pm). Please let me know if you are interested.

Many parents have been asking about our assembly item. This will be held next Term on Friday, 3 November, Week 4 in the school hall. Please stay tuned. A note will be sent out soon regarding the special item.

A special reminder that all children must bring a school hat each day. If your child has lost their hat, please check in lost property at the school office entrance. We have a “NO hat, NO play” policy here at SHNPS.

3/4H REPORT This term students in 3/4H have been learning about the

similarities and differences between Australia and our neighbouring countries and have recently been comparing the weather and long-term climates of these countries. Our work in this area will continue next term.

Our ‘Friends or Foes’ unit in Science has been very popular and 3/4H students have been engaged in many practical activities related to this topic this term.

We have continued to build on our creative and critical thinking skills this term and continue to use our seven dispositions and six coloured think caps to solve problems and issues, both inside and outside the classroom.

Congratulations to all those students who have moved up levels in our class spelling program this term. Soon we will have students on levels ranging from Year 3 to Year 6 in our classroom!

This week and next week we are involved in the ‘YPEP’ program, led by a representative from the YWCA, where we are focusing on our protective behaviour strategies.

Congratulations to Bethany and Liam, who were successful in our class public speaking competition this term. They will progress to the school finals to be held next Monday here at school.

Good luck to our Spelling Bee finalists, Atilla and Dhruv, who today represented our school at the District Spelling Bee finals.

A reminder that Winter PSSA has now finished and Summer PSSA competitions resume tomorrow, 15 September.

Another reminder that the school Book Week Parade will be held after lunch (1.45pm) next Wednesday 20 September. Students should now be finalising their costumes for the Parade.

This term we are holding a (daytime) disco here at school for Legends Day. This will be held next Thursday 21 September.

Thank you to those parents who have visited and assisted our classroom this term. We appreciate your help and look forward to your continued involvement in term 4.

A reminder that the Scope IT program will operate next term. Permission notes and payment should have been sent in by now.

We wish all our Seven Hills North families a happy and safe school holiday break.

Mr Hilly Assistant Principal

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

Woolworths Earn and Learn ends next week 21 September. Hold on to your stickers over the school holidays and bring them in the first week back so that we can send them in and find out what amazing equipment we might be eligible for. At this stage if your stickers are loose and not on a sheet that is fine just drop them in the box.

3H REPORT We were very lucky to have our student teacher,

Miss Brehoney, working with us for the last 2 weeks and look forward to when she returns for another 4 weeks in Term 4.

All of the speeches for the public speaking competition were wonderful and the children are to be congratulated. This year we have 3 children who will be presenting their speeches in front of Mrs McKewen. These 3 children presented excellent speeches and Peta, Violet and Anna will be representing our class.

After lunch on Wednesday 20 September our school will be holding our book character parade. It is hoped that all children will participate by dressing as a favourite book character. Parents and friends are most welcome.

SHNPS Idol—which is our schools talent quest will be held in the last week of school next term and any child who wishes to enter will need to audition in week 5. Further information will follow. Every year I collect prizes for the Idol winners and am just asking if any parent has freebies they get from their work that would be suitable for these prizes. If you can help with this, the prizes can either be left in the office or can be given straight to me. My room is the last demountable closest to the canteen.

Thanks in advance. Mrs Patteson and Mrs Hollins.

1B REPORT This term, students have been working extremely hard.

Their love for school and attitude towards learning is amazing to see.

1B have been exploring a range of Fairy-tales this term, to help develop their understanding of narrative structure and ‘Intertextuality.’ This unit of work has allowed students to demonstrate their creativity through their writing.

In geography, we are learning about some of the amazing things around us. Students have been looking at weather patterns in Australia and all around the world. We have also been exploring everything that is natural and man-made around us.

Mathematics this term has consisted of lots of Addition and Subtraction based games with larger numbers. It is amazing to see how good we are all getting at these! We have also been learning about Area, Grouping, Capacity and Mass, which has been a lot of fun.

Every second Friday in 1B we do a STEM based activity, which the children absolutely love. It’s so good to see how interested and keen the students are to participate in this type of learning.

Next Wednesday is our annual Book Week Parade. Students are to come to school dressed as their favourite book character and will participate in a parade after lunch.

1B has been working hard this term on our assembly item, which is on Friday 20 October (Term 4, Week 2). We cannot wait to show everyone what we have been working on.

Have a great holiday! Miss Blanch

KG REPORT Thank you to Mrs Fullerton and Mrs Fletcher for teaching

2G so beautifully while I was away. It has been lovely to return to them full of stories about my adventures, knowing they have been well looked after and happy. Thank you. I had a wonderful trip!

Well done to those families who were able to fundraise for our Dance-a-thon. I hear it was a great day!

For the last two weeks, we have been revising our child protection strategies with Donna through the Y-PEP program at school.

Next week we will be rewarding our ‘Legends’ with a special activity. Congratulations to all those children who have earned enough awards to be legends again this term.

Next week on Wednesday, it will be dress up time again for our Book Character Parade. Please think about a favourite book character you could dress up as for next week’s event.

Congratulations to Ava A and Lemar who will be 2G’s finalists in the Public Speaking Competition. Apparently, all of 2G did a great job, so all our weekly topic talk practice has definitely paid off. Well done 2G!

Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who turn up every week for reading groups. You have been so reliable and we certainly appreciate your assistance. If you would still like to volunteer, I have some vacancies available. Just let me know.

Have a good week and wonderful holiday break. Mrs Goodman

4H REPORT Very quickly we have almost come to the end of another

term. Unfortunately we have had a lot of sickness throughout winter but hopefully the new season will bring us all better health for learning. If your child is not well, please consider keeping them home until they recover. When children are unwell, it can affect both their learning and that of their peers.

4H were very pleased to be able to present their assembly item in front of their school and for their parents, friends and families. Thank you to all who came to support them. We have enjoyed learning about Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and developing our drama skills throughout this Term in both History and Creative Arts. Next Term we look forward to investigating further into Australia’s history with our ‘First Contacts’ unit, researching Australian explorers and British settlement.

It would be appreciated if you could please encourage your child to complete the weekly homework and return it each Friday. Homework provides extra spelling and mathematics practice.

Don’t forget Book Week is next week, Wednesday 20

September. I look forward to seeing all these creative costumes.

Mrs Sargeant

1M REPORT

The children have worked exceptionally hard this term, and I can’t believe we are nearly at the end of Term 3. However, we still have a very busy time ahead of us.

We have had the pleasure of Miss Brown over the last two weeks. Miss Brown is in her final year at university and she will be back next term for 4 weeks to work with your children.

I must also mention Mrs Nassar who was with us earlier in the year, gaining practical experience. It was great to have Mrs Nasser work with 1M. Mrs Nasser formed a wonderful relationship with our class and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

1M has been very busy with writing. We have the pleasure of having Mrs McKewen join us during each week to share her wealth of knowledge. Thank you Mrs McKewen. This term we have focussed on narratives and “Intertexuality”

(ask your child about the word), and have been working hard on our creativity.

In Maths we have focussed on Area, Subtraction and Grouping. We are enjoying lots of fun Maths activities to reinforce our knowledge.

Don’t forget Book week Parade next Wednesday. Each student can come to school dressed as a book character. After lunch the whole school will participate in a Book Character Parade. It is always a wonderful, fun day and it is great to see all the different costumes.

Please remember that 1M ASSEMBLY is Friday 22 October. Assembly starts approximately 2pm. Hopefully we see as many parents, siblings, grandparents, Aunties and Uncles as possible. Your children have been working so hard to prepare and they would love for you to be there.

Last but not least, I hope you all have a wonderful break and come back in term 4, fresh and renewed.

Have a great holiday! Ms Mossfield

YEAR 1/2 REPORT We have loved looking at Fairy tales, Fractured Fairy tales

and Folklore for our Literacy Topic. We have written many types of fairy tales and 1/2H have some very vivid imaginations and talented writers.

For Maths we have been studying problems, subtraction in many forms and relating addition to subtraction.

For Geography, we have studied many different landforms and designed symbols to represent these. We have also been looking at the weather and keeping a watch on all the elements.

Donna has visited our class twice to discuss Child Protection for Personal Development.

Thank you very much for all the support we received for 1/2H’s assembly item. I hope we entertained you. I’m sure you will agree that 1/2H has many talented children. I was so proud of all the children from the narrators to the main characters.

Sincerely Sally Hilly

Year 5 prospective leaders should have received a note detailing all the cut off dates.

We are still waiting for some year 6 photos. You should have received an email and letter explaining this further. Please ensure these are in BEFORE the end of term.

Attendance at school is very vital as we have many different projects running and a lot of important information/learning happens EVERY day!

We have been very impressed with Stage 3 as they work to complete their film in drama class titled ‘Determined’. These will be entered into a competition next term. If you have any concerns about your child being filmed/entered into this competition please see either Miss Ricketts or Mrs Otten.

KB REPORT Wow, time flies when you are having fun. Hasn't this term

just flown by. I can't believe just how much the children have grown up and what sponges they have become.

The highlight of the term has definitely been our excursion to the farm, we had a great day.

We will do our final tricky words test next week. Some of the children have worked very hard to learn their words. Thank you to all the wonderful parents who have helped with this.

Also a thank you to the parents who have kept their children home when they have been sick. We've been struck by a couple of pretty vicious bugs this Winter. The only way to stop the spread is to keep sick kids at home.

term 4 will be jam packed. I hope the children have a restful holiday and come back in Term 4 raring to go.

Typing.com

With an increasing need for typing skills we have signed up all the students to Typing.com, an online typing tutor, to teach your child about proper touch-typing techniques and improve their keyboarding skills. Learning to touch type helps students be more productive and better prepares them for success in school and beyond. On Typing.com, your child can practice and master the keyboard one lesson at a time. It allows them to pick up where they left off in the course and displays a keyboard and hand diagram as they type to reinforce proper finger placement. I have set your child up with their own individual account. They can access Typing.com from any computer (with an internet connection and web browser). Each student can log on using their DET logon of firstname.lastname and any numbers that come after their name eg john.smith17. Each student has the password shnps. Given the crowded curriculum at school it is not practical to be giving typing lessons, hence you are encouraged to make use of this access in your own time in the same way as you would access reading eggs or similar educational programs.
