Yes, we're blogging now at anthonyphc.blogspot.com. Not in our spare time, but during our busy work day. Why, you ask? I must admit, at first I was reluctant to spend time behind my desk at the computer. But when I saw that there was a real need to communicate on-line with homeowners about their heating, cooling, or plumbing systems, I quickly changed my mind. It's like a 24-hour Q&A source for anyone who needs to improve their comfort. Of course, you can always reach me during the day by phone; however, sometimes you just have a general question to post. If you don't want to post a question for all to see, then you can e-mail me at [email protected].
At Anthony, we believe in delivering good ol' fashion service. But we offer the latest in hi-tech devices to do our job better and faster. To serve you better, we have loaded lots of information onto our website. You can do any of the following at www.anthonyphc.com....
Provide Service Feedback, A.S.A.P. (Anthony Service Agreement Program) Renewal, Schedule Service, Request Replacement, Read Testimonials, Expert Blog, See Videos, Comfort Tips, Read Newsletters, Case Studies, Order Filters, Finance Pre-Approval, Comfort Terms, Join Our E-mail Newsletters, See Current Promotions, Product & Service Information, and you can even take a Customer Survey. Comfort SurveyThe Results Are In!This summer's on-line poll at www.anthonyphc.com was researching where you set your thermostat and if this summer you raised it a little to offset the high cost of gasoline. By our past experience, we knew that 730 was the most common and that held true in this survey. The findings were 13% at 67-700, 34% at 71-730, 30% at 74-760, and 23% at 770 plus.
Bye Bye R-22 (And what that means to you?) by Cecil Davis, Operations Mgr./Co-Owner
We're counting down the days until 2010 when air conditioner manu-facturers will (by law) stop producing air conditioners and heat pumps which use ozone-depleting R-22 refrigerant (freon). Then new cooling systems will only use R-410A, an environmentally-friendly refrigerant. Almost all older air conditioners in the market today use R-22, which will soon become scarce and pricey. Plus, R-22 is scheduled to be phased out of existence and will no longer be available for service usage in the years to come.
If you have an air conditioner or heat pump with R-22 . . . there is no way to simply replace the old refrigerant with the new refrigerant. A new system is your only option to have the non-ozone-depleting refrigerant.
If you have a known refrigerant leak in your system . . . consider upgrading your system now to save for the future.
If you have an air conditioner with R-410A . . . you have made a smart investment and you are well positioned for the future.
Don't know what refrigerant you have??? Call us and we will send a technician out at no charge to educate you on the type of refrigerant you have and the energy efficiency of your system.

Be Good To Your PianoSeasonal and even daily changes in humidity cause wood parts to swell and shrink, affecting tuning stability and sound. Extreme swings in humidity can eventually cause wood to crack and glue joints to fail. Maintaining the correct environment will preserve your piano investment for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Why are Portable Floor Humidifiers a Bad Idea?
Too much humidity can be as much of a problem as too little humidity. Unlike portable units, a Whole-House Humidifier continually monitors relative humidity levels in your home, then works to deliver the right amount of moisture—never too much or too little. Plus it works in your entire house, not just a single room. Whole-House Humidifiers don't require the daily cleaning and disinfecting that many portable units require and you never need to worry about the risk of microbial organism growth due to standing water.
You should protect your family and home from the unhealthy and damaging effects of over-dry air. If you have a dry nose, cracked, itchy skin, or sore throat when you wake up, these are signs of too little humidity in your home! Other signs include aggravated allergy and asthma symptoms, painful static electricity shocks, chipping paint, plaster splitting or cracked wood floors, furniture, trim and molding. For more on humidifiers, visit www.aprilaire.com, or call Anthony and speak with a Comfort Consultant.
See our Humidifier Special on the inside back page!
Upgrade Your Humidifier Control
Ask your Anthony technician for a digital humidistat so you will have precise control and know exactly what your home's relative humidity is.

Energy Star® Raises the Bar on Water Heaters by Aubrey Wright, 20-Year Anthony Plumbing Technician
On January 1, 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will put into effect a new ENERGY STAR® criteria for water heaters, the first in the history of the program. According to DOE projections on December 31, 2013, (the end of the fifth year in effect) the new water heater criteria is expected to save Americans approximately $780 million in utility costs, avoid 4.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and achieve cumulative energy savings of more than 3.9 billion kilowatt-hours. Water heating currently represents up to 17 percent of national residential energy consumption, making it the third largest energy user in homes, behind heating and cooling, and kitchen appliances.
The new criteria for high-efficiency and high-performance gas-fired storage (tank-type) water heaters will take effect in two phases. The first phase goes into effect January 1, 2009, and requires gas storage water heaters to be 6.9 percent more efficient than the Federal Standard. Effective September 1, 2010, phase two requires them to be 15.5 percent more efficient than the Federal Standard.
Taking effect January 1, 2009, whole-house gas tankless water heaters, which carry the ENERGY STAR® label, must be 41.4 percent more efficient than the current Federal standard. A whole-house gas tankless water heater is expected to achieve a 30 percent reduction in energy use and save a consumer approximately $108 in annual energy costs compared to a typical gas storage water heater.
It's Tradition . . .Every year, we see more garbage disposers fail during prepara-tion for Thanksgiving gatherings than any other time of the year! An Energy-Saving IdeaTIP: It's an unknown fact that different brands of compact fluorescent light bulbs last a significantly different amount of time, regardless of what the printed lifetime is on the box. You'll want to label each bulb by taking a Sharpie and writing the date of installation and the warranty on the lower side. When you go to replace, you'll have the true life span to know if it failed during the warranty period!
New 98% Efficient Furnace Available by Dan House, Comfort Consultant
How many appliances in your home are 98% efficient? I wish my car was that efficient with today's gas prices. Not to give away my age, but I've been a heating and cooling expert for many years and have seen just about everything in this business. Before I talk about the new 98% efficient furnace, let's look at what furnace efficiency means to you...
A furnace is rated for efficiency using an AFUE (Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measurement. Essentially, the AFUE number is a percentage which relates to the amount of energy that is used to heat your home. In other words - how much heat do you get to enjoy inside the house versus heat that escapes out of a chimney or vent pipe? With the new 98% efficient furnace, you only lose 2% of heat out of the vent pipe!
A furnace over 16 years old can have an AFUE rating as low as 50%, meaning you only utilize 50% of the heat created. Modern furnaces have dramatically better AFUE numbers ranging between 80 - (and now) 98%. With price increases in natural gas, this can mean dramatic savings over the course of just a few years. In addition to savings on your heating bill, there is a positive effect on the environment. Reductions in the amount of carbon dioxide that get released into the air by a new furnace are significant.
The best time to install a new furnace is always...now. We say that because the costs of gas is not going down, and the price of metal is skyrocketing. You don't do yourself any favors by waiting until the prices are like your old flue...through the roof!

Customer Focus
Are you getting tired of dealing with the "big box" rack'em stack'em stores? Then we want to introduce you to a new hard-ware store in Kansas City. Nuts and Bolts is locally owned, operated, and will remind you of what we used to call "a hardware store". The first store is at 95th and Nall
in Overland Park, Kansas.
Nuts and Bolts is a new way of doing business with an "old school" philosophy. It's called Customer Service and you can always get the help you want from a home improvement expert. There's one in almost every aisle. Even while we were interviewing the manager (Bill Gibson), he would step aside and make sure customers were finding what they needed. That's something you rarely see these days.
They may feature old-fashioned customer service, but Nuts and Bolts also offers "hi-tech" with touchscreen monitors and kiosks throughout the store. Flatscreen TVs show ad specials and video clips of the store's spokesperson...Toby Tobin from the Toby Tobin Radio Show.
Another recognized expert associated with Nuts and Bolts is Anthony's Comfort Expert, Steve Burbridge. Steve is not only on the Toby Tobin show as an occasional featured guest, but also a resource for Nuts and Bolts customers for heating, cooling and plumbing. Plus, inside the stores you will find a display of an Anthony comfort system with a kiosk to walk you through choices you have when replacing a system.

New Hardware Store goes back to
GOOD Customer Service.
Inside the store, you will also find display cases with antique tools in them. This lets customers know up front that they are in a good old-fashioned hardware store. The aisles are wide, so that you don't have to walk a mile to find everything you need.
Upon entering the store, you will be greeted, and if you need immediate assistance, someone is within reach. As you go down the first aisle, you quickly notice the main feature of the store...the Customer Service Center (shown right). This illustrates that customer service is their primary job, instead of returns or commercial sales.
Even though the Service Center is close, chances are you will see someone who can help before you ever get there. The management's goal is to have enough help at all times, so they can get you what you need as fast as you need it.
There are plans for three stores in the area. The second store is at 39th & Noland Road in Independence. The third store will be located in the Northland. Nuts and Bolts is definitely worth driving to, whether you live near or far.
