Makes about 3 million years. the Hemiauchenia, an
American camelid like the llama emigrated to South
America.
From there he developed the 4 species of South
American camelids, 2 of which are domesticated
(llama and alpaca) and 2 are wild (guanaco and
vicuña).
Approximately 95% of these species are found in
regions of southern Peru. They all live in semiarid
environments and high, Alpacas are bred in altitudes
ranging from 3,500 to over 4,500 meters above sea
level, where they can naturally withstand temperatures
that fluctuate between -20°C to +30°C in a single day,
surviving on a special low-protein diet based on
natural grasses.
Camelids provide various products, among which
are:
- The fiber, which has unique features for the
textile industry.
- Meat, which has a fairly high nutritional value.
- The skins and hides are used for industry and
handicraft.
- The manure, which is used as fertilizer.
Alpacas (lama pacos) are one of the most beautiful
South American Camelids. Related to the Llama,
Guanacos and Vicuña, Alpacas have been prized for
their fibre since Pre-Incan times due to the properties
and quality of their hair. There are two Alpaca types:
Huacayo and Suri.
Alpaca is a silky, soft, durable fibre that has unique
thermal properties due to the microscopic air pockets
found within it. These pockets allow the user to breathe
through the fibres on warm days, and likewise trap
body heat in cold weather. It is also elastic and non-
flammable.
Alpaca hair occurs in over 24 natural shades, which
makes it an attractive alternative for top designers
world-wide. The versatility of the Alpaca fibre allows it to
be transformed into knitted and woven garments,
accessories and crafts.
Huacaya (LAMA PACOS)
Huacayo is the predominant Alpaca type.
Its fine and bulky fleece offers the widest
range of natural shades. Huacayos have a
harmonious shape giving an appearance of
strength and gracefulness. Around 90% of
the Alpaca population in Peru is Huacayo.
Suri (SURI)
Suri is the least predominant Alpaca type.
It has a long, shiny and silky fibre. Its
fleece occurs in a narrow range of natural
shades - white, fawns and light browns.
The Suri shape has a distinctive look due
to its long, curly hair. Around 10% of the
Alpaca population in Peru is Suri.
One of the advantages of alpaca wool is
that it can be used by people with sensitive
skin, this wool does not cause allergies and
itchy skin. Another quality of alpaca hair is
naturally curly that is, making it a highly
elastic and resistant thread. In addition to
being water resistant, also have heating
properties. This implies that although its first
use is to be carried in a cold climate, can
also be worn if the weather is more
forgiving.
The raiding alpacas provide sustainability
and development of the entire population of
the surrounding area who are dedicated to
the care and upbringing of these llamas.
Due to the wilds of their habitat, Camelids have developed over hundreds of
years, special protection, a thin and lightweight fleece does not retain water,
resistant to sunlight. This allows to ensure a permanent and appropriate coat
to combat the extreme changes in temperature. Alpaca fiber contains
microscopic air sacs that make possible the manufacture of lightweight
fabrics. Furthermore, the combing and carding system subject to, enable a
wide variety of tissues from thermal blankets to wools to cool.
Ecologic support
It is important to mention that the breed of
alpacas is made in perfect harmony with the
environment and with its proximity to the
Andes. A long time ago the alpaca has been
considered a sacred animal because of its
fiber, sometimes in a highest level than gold or
jewelry.
Important: The Alpaca is not abused for their
wool. We look after the welfare of our alpacas
as their habitat
Textile Properties:
• Softness and visual texture. The fiber, soft to the
touch, and with excellent appearance and natural
luster, gives garments unsurpassable drape,
elegance and style together with an outstanding
handle.
• Thermal insulation and moisture-absorbing
properties. The fiber is a thermal insulator and
absorbs ambient humidity, thus affording greater
protection and comfort in a variety of climates.
• Non-flammability. The fiber will not burn unless it
is in direct contact with a flame and therefore
affords the wearer greater safety.
• Strength and elasticity. High strength and
elasticity make the fiber particularly durable.
• Felting. The fiber has a reduced tendency to felt
and garments made from it thus maintain their new
appearance and do not lose their shape.

Baby alpaca yarn is yarn spun from alpaca
fiber that is fine enough to be classified as
“baby alpaca.” Alpaca fiber is classified not
by age of the animal, but by the diameter of
the hair. Baby alpaca is the finest, softest
yarn, and it is highly prized for knitting and
other crafts. Tends to have a cost higher.
Of the South American camelids, the
alpaca is the one whose fleece is used in
any number of fabrics for fashion.
The primary purpose of clothing is used in
knitting, but it is also woven into fabrics for
clothing, accessories - such as shawls and
stoles - and tapestries.
Alpaca fiber is Premium breeding, shorn of
young animals and considered lighter,
warmer and softer than cashmere.
To expand the use of alpaca fiber, some
textile producers mix it with wool, cotton
and silk clothes both in knitted to woven
cloth. There is also a growing market for
outdoor sports clothing made of alpaca,
thanks to its light weight and better
insulation in cold weather.

made of alpaca are a range of
coarse to fine gabardine fabric.
