Design Competition Brief

Message from the CEO of Roofing Tile Association of Australia

Since2005,theThinkBrickAwardshavecelebratedclaybrickdesign.

RooftileswereintroducedintotheAwardsin2013withconceptualdesign.FourinnovativeAustralianarchitectswereinvitedtopresentavisionandabuildingproposalforthesuburbanstreetofthefuture.Innovationusingrooftileswasakeyelementofthatstreetandshowcasedtheversatilityofrooftiles.

In2014,theRoofTileExcellencecategorywasintroducedintotheawardswithpositiveresponseandworthywinners.

TheRoofTileExcellenceawardrewardsarchitectswhouseconcreteandterracottarooftilesintheirresidentialorcommercialbuildingdesigns.

Inadditiontothe$15,000prizefortheRobinDodsTerracottaRoofcategory,anda$10,000cashprizeforeachoftheotherfivecategories,andaGrandPrixPrizewillbeawardedtotheoverallbestentryacrossallsixcategories.ThewinnerwillwintwoBusinessClassticketstoVeniceBiennale2018.

In2015,wereceivedover300nominationsacrossallawardcategories.Everyyearwecontinuetobeinspiredbythecreativityandinnovationinarchitecturaldesignsusingbricks,blocks,paversandrooftiles.

Welookforwardtoseeinghowyourprojectshavetranscendedtheirrooftilebeginningstoembodytimelessness.

Who is Roofing Tile Association of Australia?

TheRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliaistherooftileindustry’speakorganisation,representingtheconcernsandinterestsofmembersacrossthecountry,withaparticularfocusontraining(includingapprenticeships)andoccupationalhealthandsafetyissues.TheRTAArepresentsmorethan90percentoftherooftileindustry,includingallmanufacturersofconcreteandterracottarooftiles.

Tiledroofscombinesuperiordurability,colourfastness,strengthwithalonglife.Theyalsohelpreducetheintrusionofexternalnoises,provideprotectionagainstradiantheatinabushfire,havehighlevelsofthermalinsulation,andoffermoreresistancetowindsuctionthanlightweightsheets.

ThosearejustsomeofthereasonswhytiledroofsarepreferredbymorehomeownersandbuildersacrossAustralia.

Theroofisanintegralpartofanybuilding,androoftilingcelebratesaskilledtradetoexecutedesign.

In2013,theRoofingServicesindustrygeneratedatotalof$2.65billioninrevenuewith$875millionvalue-addedservices.

TheRoofTileExcellenceAwardcategoryrewardsinnovationandcraftsmanshipinconcreteandterracottarooftilesandrecognisesthecontributionofarchitects,builders,rooftilersandmanufacturersinthatprocess.

TheRoofTileExcellenceAwardcategoryincludescommercialandresidential,builtprojectsthatexemplifyoutstandingcraftsmanshipandinnovationthroughtheuseofconcreteandterracottarooftiles.

Roof Tile Excellence Award Entry Criteria

General

Nominatedprojectmustmeetthefollowingcriteria:

• Rooftilesmustfeatureindesign.

• CompletedsinceJanuary2014andlocatedinAustralia.

• NotenteredintopreviousThinkBrickawards.

• Mustexemplifyarchitecturalinnovation,collaborationbetweenprojectteam,andshowahighlevelofskillandcraftsmanship.

• Entrymustbesubmittedbythe closing date of 5th May 2016.

• Onlyentriesthataresubmittedinfullandonline through our websitewillbeaccepted.

• Aprojectmaybeenteredinmultiplecategories,providingthatprojectmeetsthecriteriaofthespecificcategoryasoutlinedbelow.EachprojectmayonlybeenteredonceinthesameLandscapecategory.

Prize Theprizeisatrophyandcertificateforthewinningproject.Thewinningarchitectwillalsoreceive$10,000fortheprojectandthechancetowintheGrandPrixprize-twoBusinessClassticketstoVeniceBiennale2018.

Presentation of Awards

ThefinalistsandwinnersoftheRoofTileExcellenceAward2016willbeannouncedandpresentedattheAwardsGalaDinner,whichwillbeheldinSydneyonFriday, 5th August 2016.Allsubmissionswillreceiveaninvitationfortwoforeachpartyinvolvedinthesubmission.Additionalticketstoattendtheeventareavailableforpurchase.

TheAwardsGalaDinnerincorporatestheHorburyHuntResidential,HorburyHuntCommercial,KevinBorlandMasonry-CommercialandResidential,BruceMackenzieLandscape,RoofTileExcellence,andRobinDodsTerracottaRoofcategories.TheGrandPrixprizewillbeawardedtothebestnominationamongstthesixcategories.

Post Competition Promotion

TheprojectswillbefeaturedontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites,socialmedia,publications,industrypresentations,roadshowsandTBA/CMAA/RTAAevents.

Media Demands

Participantsshouldbepreparedtomakethemselvesavailableforallmediaandpublicityrequestsontheirsubmittedprojects,includingbutnotlimitedtophone,emailorface-to-faceinterviewsforbroadcast,online,socialmedia,orprintpublication.

Terms and conditions

Photographssubmittedaspartofthisnominationmaybeexhibited,publishedandusedinmarketingactivitiesinthepromotionoftheAwardsandasacasestudyontheThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliawebsites.

ThewinningprojectandanyreceivingcommendationswillalsobepublishedinThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustralia’spublications.

Pleaseincludeanyphotographycreditsinyoursubmission.ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliacannotbeheldresponsibleforpublicationofphotoswithnocreditifthisisnotprovided.

Latematerialwillnotbeaccepted.

Submissionofanentryimpliesconsentofallmembersoftheprojectteamtoenterthiscompetition.

TheJury’sdecisionisfinalandnocorrespondencewillbeenteredintoregardingthatdecision.

AllbuildingproductsusedinthesubmittedentriesmustcomplywiththeBuildingCodeofAustraliaandrelevantAustralianstandardsasmandatedbylegislation.Ifnecessary,participantswillbeaskedtodemonstrateproofofcompliance.

ThinkBrickAustralia,ConcreteMasonryAssociationofAustraliaandRoofingTileAssociationofAustraliarespectyourprivacyandwillnotshareyourcontactinformationwithanythirdparty.

Assessment

Jury

AjuryconsistingofeminentarchitectsandindustryprofessionalswillbeappointedbyThinkBrickAustraliatojudgethesubmissionsandannounceawinner.The2016jurywillbeannouncedontheThinkBrickAustraliawebsite.

Eachjurorwillberequiredtoacknowledgepersonalorprofessionalconnectionswithanyoftheparticipantsortheiremployees.Inthecaseofsuchconflicts,theCompetitionAdvisorwilloverseeatransparentprocesswherebytheseconflictsarealleviated.AtthediscretionoftheCompetitionAdvisor,jurorswillbeaskedtotakenopartintheassessmentofaffectedentries.Aphotographerwillalsobepresentduringthejudgingtodocumenttheevent.

Submission

Submission Material and Format:

• ProjectStatement–includinginformationonwhatrooftileswereused,theteaminvolved(includingarchitect,rooftilecontractor,rooftilemanufacturerandbuilder).Theprojectstatementmusthaveaminimumof50andamaximumof200words.

• Youmustsubmitfour(4)imagesoftheprojectthatbestrepresenttherooftilework.

• Pleasesupplythesefourimagesashigh-resolutionjpeg,tifforpdffilesataminimumof300dpi,2000x2000pixels.

• Itispreferredthatyousubmitafloorplanoftheproject,but your entry will not be invalid if this is unavailable.

Lodgement

Yoursubmissionisdueby5 pm EST Thursday 5th May 2016,tobeuploadedonline through our website.
