Territory and land use on flood areas: the ’fok’

• ’FOK’ (hung.) is a constuction and technology made by peasants, sg. like a small chanel for diverting the river water arriving too quickly in case of a flood. Interests are defens and use at the same time.

Page 6: From Wedding Shirt To Strip Carpet

Territory and land use on flood areas: the ’fok’

• The fok has to be cleaned very ordinary, otherwise it can not divert the water in emergency or the water can not go back after the inundation in the normal river-branch: and the territory will be a swamp, fish are going to die, the land does not fit anymore for agriculture. The areas surronding the foks in dry time were used for produciton of fruits, planted by different trees and for meadow/pasture-land.

• Demolishing foks by cutting of small river branches. • Result: big innondations, tempo and force of water

is biger, damages in case of flood are huge.• Examples of revitalisations of flood areas: Nagykörű

at the river Tisza – reconstruction of foks with their natural landscape, natural flora and fauna, revival of traditional handycrafts and rural development (in framework of a PHARE pragram)

The renaissance of home made milk and dairiers in Hungary

• Milk is a basic element of Hungarian alimentation. We have a very wide scale of dairies made by using the milk of coat, sheep and goat.

• The rapid industrialisation of agriculture in Hungary eliminated familiar dairy and crowded out lots of different diaries.

• After some milk-scandals people are returning to home made milks. If they have any chance for reviving or surviving – is a question.

the matyó-embroidery• Matyó is a small an ethnographical group in

Hungary, which became famous because of its colourful embroidery in the late 19th century, at the time of national self-construcion the embodiment of the Hungarians.

• The state hold the folkart of the region on the level of the national representation, and in the 20th century the tourism made it worldwide known.

• This trend - ’matyó industry’ - resulted at first a prosperity, but later it ended in a false image of the community, kept only for the sake of tourism.

• The fashion designer group Aquanaute made 2006 a collection titled Pure Source. The clothes were inspired by objectivations of the hungarian rural culture. Nevertheless the old motives have been putted in a new context.

• The aim was -apart from the creation of a special aesthetic and visual experience - to put the tradition in a new and more innovative orbit.
