Summer is a season when many schoolchildren and working adults are able to have vacation time - a break from the responsibilities of school and job - a time of freedom. But what is freedom? Freedom from what? Consider this. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence. One sentence stands out as the heart and soul of this historic document: We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalien- able Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. These simple, clear words are rooted in the writings of the prophets and the teaching of Jesus and are in harmony with the love of God. While there was a committee of five men commissioned to prepare the Declaration of Independence, it was Thomas Jefferson who personally hand wrote that historic document. How could a brilliant man like Jefferson be a slave owner and write about the self-evident truth that God created all men equal and everyone has the undeniable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness? In my eyes, Jefferson was a normal human being. We all are capable of praying, Our Father . . . Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, while we are ignoring the whispers and nudges of the Holy Spirit calling us to thoughts, words and actions rooted in love. I believe that if Jefferson had truly wanted to do Gods will, he would have given his slaves their freedom and lost his wealth. But, as it is, Jefferson remained enslaved by his own self interest. Do we? If we are fortunate enough to have vacation time, please remember that God doesnt stop loving you absolutely, unconditionally and eternally. Whether you travel on vacation, or have a stay-cation, here is a way to keep God in your daily life. Read the gospel according to Mark. Read one chapter a day and invest a few minutes into quietly reflecting on what you have read. If you have children with you, read that chapter aloud as a family, and if the Holy Spirit moves you, talk with each other about what you have just read. Remember, God loves you and wants to bless you. Grace and peace be with you, David

Summer is a season when many schoolchildren and working adults are able to have vacation time - a break from the responsibilities of school and job - a time of freedom. But what is freedom? Freedom from what? Consider this. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence. One sentence stands out as the heart and soul of this historic document:

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalien-able Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

In my eyes, J efferson was a normal human being. We all are capable of praying, “Our Father . . . Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,” while we are ignoring the whispers and nudges of the Holy Spirit calling us to thoughts, words and actions rooted in love. I believe that if Jefferson had truly wanted to do God’s will, he would have given his slaves their freedom and lost his wealth. But, as it is, Jefferson remained enslaved by his own self interest. Do we? If we are fortunate enough to have vacation time, please remember that God doesn’t stop loving you absolutely, unconditionally and eternally. Whether you travel on vacation, or have a stay-cation, here is a way to keep God in your daily life. Read the gospel according to Mark. Read one chapter a day and invest a few minutes into quietly reflecting on what you have read. If you have children with you, read that chapter aloud as a family, and if the Holy Spirit moves you, talk with each other about what you have just read. ...Music Notes….

The Spirit of God at Old Stone Church

By the time you read this, you will know that, during worship on June 23, Rev. Colton’s sermon closed by our singing, three times with building intensity, the brief but powerful “Spirit of the Living God.”

The song’s words are worth quoting in full: “Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.”

In my “day job”, prior to becoming an assistant superintendent of schools, I was a high school English teacher for 19 years, and from that perspective a particularly powerful line to me is “Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me,” with the four single-syllable verbs—“melt, mold, fill, use” —having their own increasing intensity.

In the spirit of God, we are first melted, then molded; like any mold, we will maintain the same important essence, but in a newly-formed shape for a newly-formed purpose. From that point, the mold becomes filled, confirming that our new shape will not be solitary, but will be powerfully imbued with the spirit of God. Then comes the use: our mold, with the spirit’s giving energy within, has a purpose beyond itself.

Those four simple words — “melt, mold, fill, use”—help me consider the action of the Spirit upon each of us. They also capture a powerful essence of our worship each Sunday: not solitary, but together with others in God’s presence, each of us becomes more than we individually were before. We become shaped, and energized, for a higher purpose in which spirit is the driving force!

Our 2018-2019 school year came to an end on June 12th. The children performed for their family and friends in the parlor, featuring poems, instruments and dances. They enjoyed refreshments and received a well-deserved certificate for their hard work and participation this past year from their teachers. Our teachers are creative and dedicated to enhancing their student’s lives. We would like to announce the retirement of our Director, Karen Goodale, who gave the ELC three wonderful years. As well as, two of our dedicated teachers, Joan Rizzo and Karen Bell, who have been at ELC for over 30 years. We would like to wish them good luck on their retirement, they will surely be missed. The Summer Enrichment Program began on June 17th and we have 15 students in the first session. Over the summer the teachers have been planning new activities that incorporate readiness skills in reading, math, social studies and science. Our ages range from 3 to 7, so we are charged with the task of making their experiences meaningful and fun! Some of the units of study will include “creating and performing in a play “Hansel and Gretel”, lazy days of summer, using non-traditional art supplies to create their own art gallery and more. We will be visiting the Hagaman Library to take part in their summer activities such as “Christine’s Critters”, “NASA: Space Place”, and “Read to Samantha”. The children always look forward in taking full advantage of our playground this summer season. We are taking fall registrations for our 2019-2020 school year. As always, we thank the church members for supporting our program in so many ways.

Have a wonderful summer and be safe!!
