Pete Doherty is the musician who is on the front cover for this magazine. Pete Doherty is well known for being the lead singer of ‘The Libertines’, this meaning when people see the magazine if they are fans it will attract them into purchasing the magazine. There is a full length shot of Pete jumping in the air, which means we are able to recognise him almost straight away. He is also holding a guitar in the shot, this shows off his personality and his love for music. There is some negative space around Pete this makes him the centre of attention of the magazine, which could draw the reader in.

The name of the magazine ‘Rolling Stone’ is hidden behind Pete, this gives a sense that he is more important than the magazine itself. However, if someone didn't know the magazine name they may have some difficulty trying to work it out.

Some of the magazines name is hidden by Pete, this again shows that the magazine think he should be the main importance on the front cover, therefore he should not be covered by any writing on the front. Rolling Stone is known for displaying the artists in front of the text, so this layout is always expected when reading one of their magazines.

The main colours used on this magazine cover are, red, black and a light grey. Pete Doherty’s guitar and the masthead are both a similar colour which presents them both to stand out significantly compared to the rest of the cover. By using a light grey background Pete Doherty automatically ‘jumps off the page’ as he is wearing all black which makes the image of him really grab your attention.

In the main image Pete Doherty is shown jumping in air whilst looking at his guitar. By using this image and not one of him straight on or looking directly at the camera it could show that Pete’s main focus is on his music. This image also gives the magazine cover a personality boost making it more appealing to readers, therefore leading them into purchasing the magazine. The magazine also has a more exciting and interesting look to it as this is not an image that would usually be used for a magazine cover.

\

The price of the magazine is displayed above the barcode and is in a small size. This is usually where prices are placed on magazines, meaning people have to find the barcode first before finding out the price. However, for people who do not know that this is where the price is it may be hard for them to find it only takes up a tiny amount of space on the page. If someone where to struggle to find the price it may put them off purchasing the magazine.

The text on the magazine gives the reader an insight to what is in the magazine. This can encourage people to buy the magazine as they are able to find out whats inside to magazine without having to look through it. This will attract readers as if they see something they are interested in they will want to purchase the magazine to find out more, especially if there are a fan of the featured musicians.

The majority of the text on the front cover is black which makes the text stand out on the light grey background. It also means that none of text will be too in your face. By having the text black readers are more likely to have their attention drawn into what else the magazine has to offer. Furthermore, by having most of the text the same colour the reader is not drawn to a specific piece of writing.

Page 2: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

The front page of this magazine has a lot going on, therefore the pages itself looks busy. This may attract people to the magazine as there is many different things for them to look at. However, all of the content within in the page is organised, which makes the magazine look tidy. This conveys a sense of professionalism of it presents that the magazine wants to give off a good impression.

The name of this magazine ‘NME’ takes up the upper left hand corner of the page, this makes the name stand out to readers and also makes it clear to read. The colour of the masthead which has a red background and white font, really grabs the readers attention as it stands out from the text of this text. By using these colours it will engage the reader, which could lead to them wanting to purchase the magazine. By using the same colour masthead on all of their magazines, people who frequently purchase this will be able to regencies the magazine at first glance.

The band on the front of this magazine ‘Led Zeppelin’ take up the whole magazine with 4 separate images, by doing this readers are automatically drawn into the images leading them onto reading the magazines itself. People who are a fan of Led Zeppelin will be very likely to buy this magazine if they see the front cover. This means that for the magazine to catch the readers eye the images must stand out in order for the magazine to jump out amongst others. All four images have been edited to have the same tone of colour, this gives the sense that all of the images can be conveyed as one. In the middle of the images there is a quote with says ‘Whole Lotta Led’ this could potentially be a pun as Led Zeppelin have a song called ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by replacing the word ‘love’ with ‘Led’ it could grab the readers attention as it gives of a sense of humour.

On certain parts of the magazine there are splashes of fellow which makes those parts stand out significantly compared to the rest of the front cover. The magazine may have done this because they want to readers attention to be attracted to specific parts of the magazine. The quote ‘Whole Lotta Led’ stands out as this piece of text is much larger than the rest of the text. This means people who enjoy Led Zeppelin’s music will find it easy to realise that from the intended pun the magazine will feature Led Zeppelin. However, if someone didn't know who the band this magazine would stand out less as it does not show the bands actual name within the front cover.

On the bottom right hand corner of the page there is a section titled ‘Their greatest riffs as chosen by..’ by doing a section on this and listing some other bands that have chosen Led Zeppelins greatest riffs, this may intrigued the reader as it shows the magazine features other artists. This may encourage the reader to purchase the magazine to find out more information on the band.

From looking at this magazine it is clear i has a lot going on on it, this means that people will spend more time looking at the different images on the front and also reading the different sections. This may encourage them to purchase the magazine as the more they read cover the more they find out about what the magazine includes.

By having the name of the magazine at the top left it stands out very well, meaning people will naturally look at this first. By having this here it makes it easier for the reader to recognise the magazine almost instantly, this then saving time instead of actually having to look in dept for it.

All of the text around and on the images are formatted in a way which grabs your attention yet they do not draw any attention away from the main images themselves. By laying the magazine out like this none of the text or images are restricted from standing out. From looking at the layout it shows a sense of professionalism as it is clear how and where the text is positioned has been well thought about.

The main colours used on this magazine cover are, red white and yellow. By keeping the colours to a minimum it makes the magazine look more eye catching and co-ordinate. In the upper right there is a use on the colour blue, this is the only part of the magazine with blue which makes it stand out the most, thus drawing the readers attention to it.

Page 3: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

The front page of this magazine is somewhat busy yet presents a sense of formality. This could potentially attract people to the magazine as they may be intrigued as to what the magazine holds. As all of the information on the cover is organised, the magazine looks tidy. This shows that the magazine has a form of professionalism and that it wants to grasp the readers attention.

The name of this magazine ‘MOJO’ takes up the majority of the top of the page, this makes the name stand out and it also clear for readers to see. By having the masthead where it is readers will be able to locate it quickly and also the size of it grabs their attention.

The band on the cover of this magazine ‘The Beatles’ cover almost the whole of the magazine, this attracts the readers attention as they are the main subject on the page. Readers whole are a fan of The Beatles will be likely to buy this magazine if they see that they are the front cover. This then means the image must be eye catching in order to stand out significantly. The image itself is a cartoon image which gives the magazine a friendly feel to it. This could also attract people into purchasing the magazine as you rarely see magazines with band members in cartoon style. If somewhere to be a fan of The Beatles and saw this magazine there is a fair chance they could purchase it.

There are a variety of colours used on this magazine front cover which, makes it stand out and also shows a sense that the magazine is interesting. The colours that are used are colours that are seen to be vibrant, this gives the image on this page a sort of ‘psychedelic’ feel. The audience of this magazine could be drawn in by these colours as they are eye catching and fun.

Usually on magazines the price is displayed above the barcode, but not on this magazine the price is shown above the masthead. By having it here it can be easy to locate as when someone reads the name of the magazine they will also see the price clearly. However, if someone were used to seeing the price above the barcode they may find it hard to see the price as it is in a small font and isn't very eye catching.

By having a busy front cover people will have to spend more time looking at the magazine. This may encourage them to purchase the magazine as they will have to spend more time reading the cover, to find out what the magazine includes. They could use a short and subtle cover line to boost the chance of the reader buying the magazine.

All of the text that is included on the magazines front cover is surrounding the main image and it also makes sure that none of the text covers the bands faces. The layout for this is clearly thought as none of the text overlaps or draws away the attention of anything else on the page. If the faces where to covered it would give a sense of unprofessionalism and will put people off. However, you can see the band members clearly. By showing the magazines professional side it shows the reader that the magazine is well thought about.

The text on the magazine gives the reader an insight to what is in the magazine. This can encourage people to buy the magazine as they are able to find out whats inside to magazine without having to look through it. Also by having different band names at the top of the magazine, readers will be able to know what other bands will be featured within the magazine. This could also draw people into purchasing the magazine.

Some of the magazines name is hidden by the main image, this shows that the magazine think The Beatles should be the main importance on the front cover, therefore they should not be covered by any writing on the front.

Page 4: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

There is a mid shot of Pete Doherty holding two beers with ‘In good health’ written across the image, which kind of contradicts the image of Pete as he looks a little rough. this takes up one page of this double page spread. it really grabs the attention of people reading or looking through the magazine. Pete is looking directly into the camera which makes the reader feel as though he is making eye contact with them. By using an image of Pete looking straight into the camera it may encourage readers to read the page out him. The colours used for this image are all fairly similar. By having similar colours throughout the photo it doesn't draw any attention away from Pete himself. The fact that the picture of him takes up one whole side of the double page spread it conveys that the he is meant to be the main attraction on the page.

At the start of the initial text there is a large ‘A’ which stands out very dramatically on the page. By using this readers are drawn to it straight away as it really grabs your attention. Also the A is in a somewhat bright orange colour which makes it jump off the page even more. From having this here it guides the reader to where they need to start reading the text. Also, in the middle of the page there is quote saying “People say, ‘Oh Peter used to be your singer’. I’m like, ‘What are you talking about used to be?! this quote has its own section of all the other text. It is directly in the middle, which makes it the centre of attention. From it being here people will automatically read it before they read anything else. By adding a quote in the middle of the text it makes it look more interesting and makes you feel more intrigued into reading the text surrounding it.

The text itself is split into three columns, which presents a sort of newspaper feel to it. This may be set out like this out it makes the text easier to follow and clearer for people to read. If the text were not be set out like this people may think that it is too much for them to read, therefore they wouldn't be interested in the page. However, because it is split up like this, it makes the text look more organised and readable. each column is is neat and presentable, which shows there has been thought put into who the text will be lay out. this shows the company like to portray a sense of professionalism.

Throughout the text there is one point where once again the first letter of the text is enlarged. this may have been used to show people that something within the text may be changing. it also makes the columns look more presentable and also makes it look a little more interesting.

Once again in the image Pete is holding two beers, which could show that be may be in a pub. He is also wearing a red jumper and a large necklace. This image would attract the likes of teenagers and adults that are likely to drink. The fact that the image of Pete has been taken in this way, which looks like a normal environment allows the reader to feel more in touch with Pete. Also at the bottom on the image in white text there is some writing, which attracts the reader as within the text it is talking about Petes past band he was in. This would grab the attention more of the people who like Petes music and also ones who are interested in finding out about what type of music he is into making.

In the bottom right hand corner it says ‘NME’ in a small font which if someone wanted to know where the article was from they would know.

Page 5: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

On this double page spread there are various images of Led Zeppelin, which makes the page seem interesting as there is more to look at. In on of the images it is the whole band playing, this image is the centre photo used on the double page. By using this certain image it can show off the character of each band member when they're playing. In all of the images none of the members are making a direct contact with the camera which gives the magazine a less formal feel to it. Three of the images are in black and white which gives the magazine an ‘old’ feel to it, which also links into the band as they themselves are kind of old. The fact that there are four different images shows the magazine really wanted to show the different sides of the band. By doing this people will also be more intrigued into reading the text surrounding the images.

In the top right hand corner of the page it says ‘One night in Paris’ in a fairly large font. this straight away grabs your attention as it is the biggest text on the page. By using this it could be a potential pun for their album ‘One night stand in paris’, this would grab the attention of people who are fans of the band as they would recognise the name. This title also leads onto the text below talking about the bands time within France. This then makes the magazine look more organised as the title flows perfectly into the text.

The text on both pages are placed around the images of led zeppelin. This is a good layout which makes the page look interesting. On one of the images there is a space between in the image itself and the text which creates an outline. This means no text will overlap the image and drown it out. This shows that the whole double page is based around Led Zeppelin, showing that they are the main attention of this article.

On this double page spread there is a minimum amount of text. On the left side of the page, there is one paragraph talking about Led Zeppelins experience in France. All other pieces of text are quotes made by the bands. This is quite an effective way of setting the page out as the reader is not bombarded by information, the page is short and snappy. However, this could end in people being disinterested in the page as there isn't that much to read. This shows the page off to be somewhat empty and there are quite a lot of negative spaces.

The background for this page is white, which means it doesn't draw any attention away from the text and images on the page. The background helps the images and text to be shown more vigorously. This could draw in peoples attention and the page looks simple and interesting.

In three of the images the band have musical instruments with them, this can show that they are dedicated to their music. This may also get the attention of readers as usually bands have photos taken of them where they are stood together looking directly at the camera. Therefore, having images of the band playing adds a personality boost to the page.

Page 6: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

The image which is on the right hand side of the page takes up the whole righthand side page and some of the left, which draws the readers attention here. The church and the dark looking clouds in the background adds an eery feel to the article, as usually you would associate these types of things with ‘spooky’ films. On this image the man on the photo looks as though he’s looking directly into the camera. this could show that he is trying to connect with the readers. For people who like American Gothic, they may be interested in reading this as it haves information about the band on the left side.

The diagonal divide on the left hand side of the page draws the readers attention to the text. By using a background for the white text it makes the words stand out much more. This still maintains the eery feel to the magazine. Th text on this page is matched with the rest of the entire page which makes the double page look very organised co-ordinate.

This whole double page spread is black and white, which relates to the title ‘American gothic’. The title has been put into two different fonts ‘American’ being blocked and ‘gothic’ in a font which in fact looks gothic.

At the start of the text the first letter is enlarged. This may have been used so people see it and straight away know that the text is going to start there. By having the ‘i’ this big it is certain that it will be one of the first things people see when they look at the page.

From looking at this page is it clear that there isn't much information on it. This gives it a simplistic look and also an organised feel. There is also a sense of professionalism was there isn't so much information that its right up in your face. As well only a small amount of text covers the image, so none of the attention the image is getting is hidden by too much text. By having minimum text it makes the magazine short and snappy. However, this could be a negative thing as readers may have expected there to be more within the page, so when they see it they may feel let down.

Page 7: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

At the top of this page ‘MOJO’ is shown central, large and very bold. This makes the titles of the page very noticeable and also it makes it stand out. This means people are more likely to see the name of the magazine and know where the information within the page is from. By having the masthead there it can show people that they are prude of their name and want it to stand out to their viewers eyes.

On the page there is an image on the right hand side. This is a half length angle which has been taken at a sideways view. This allows the readers to see some of what he is wearing and his face as well. In the photo he is wearing quite a formal wear, which gives the impression that the magazine want to have a formal and well presented magazine. In the photo he is not making direct eye contact but it looking off the side. This means the reader isn't drawn in by direct address.

The majority of this page is in a black and white tone, apart from the page numbers, which are in red. By using the red it makes them parts of the text stand out a lot more than the other texts. From having the page numbers in read it makes it simple for readers to see what page numbers are where and also helps draw their attention to the text next to the numbers.

The name of the page is made so that it is big and bold. This is so that readers are able to see the page as soon as they take a glance in the magazine, this also means that they do not have to spend a long time reading the magazine to find out what the page is about. Underneath the title there is a section with page numbers and a subtitle and under that sub title there is a little description as to what the page is about. The descriptions font is a lot smaller than the page title and does not stand out as much. This shows that the they are not as important as the page title itself.

On this page all of the writing is on the left hand side of the page, whereas the image is only on the right. The image does not overlap any of the text, showing the layout has been thought about and organised in a clear layout. The text fits perfectly next to them image conveying that the magazine has professionalism. On this contents page all information usually found on a contents page is here. The page itself does not look busy or overcrowded.

Within the image there is quote which has been taken from one of the interviews which is included in the magazine. This is used to persuade people into reading the page as the magazine thinks that this is an interesting touch to add to the page. Underneath the quote in red it says who the quote is by and what interview it has been taken from. This is used to furthermore persuade people to go to the page with the interview.

Underneath the title there are two parallel dashed lines which contain text between them. The text in the middle of them is the date and issue number, the date being on the left and the issue number on the right. By including the date people purchasing the magazine will clearly be able to remember when that magazine was released and also when they purchased it. The issue number allows people to count how many issues of the magazine they have and also helps the keep in order with what magazine they have and what ones they dont.

Page 8: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

The heading for this page is ‘Contents’ this lets people know what the page is about and what the page will include, before they even need to read the rest of the page. This makes it easier for the reader and they will not get confused as to where the contents page is. If someone were to be looking through the magazine it will be easy for them to find the contents because the title stands out so much. The black banner with runs behind the title makes the white text more vivid. The font is bold which again makes it pretty noticeable. The font creates a sense that the page is important and should be read, it does does by using capitalisation to name it jump off the page.

On the page there is a column named ‘features’ which includes things such a page numbers and the titles of the other pages within the magazine. this allows people to find certain information within the magazine and they are able to find there certain pages are if they want to read them. this does not include all pages, only the pages in which the magazine think will interest their readers the most. The colour of the page numbers is different to the initial description that goes along with it. This makes them stand out and draws in your attention to the numbers. By doing this people will not get confused as to where the page numbers are. beside the numbers there are titles of each page, this gives the reader an insight as to what the pages main focus will be about. under this there is a description as well which gives more information abut the pages.

In the lower left hand side of the page there is a section named ‘every month’ meaning that there are certain pages in the magazine which are updated but, are always there. This adds some interest to the magazine as it shows that people who regularly buy the magazine will be used to this. It makes the magazine seem more fun as there are things to do within it rather than just reading through it. This may also make people look forward to purchasing the next copy of the magazine.

In the top right of the page there is the date in which the magazine was released. This is useful for the magazine as magazines which may come out weekly can keep on top of which magazine was released when. This also ensures that there is no confusion between the magazines that are being put out. This allows people to know when the magazine was published if they were to keep a collection of the magazines.

‘The Courteeners’ take up quite a bit of the contents page. They may have been featured on the front cover on the magazine and therefore have been continued through to the contents. The image breaks up the text and does not make the page as full as it might do if it were text in the place of the image. This image may also be used to show off or advertise the band, this allows people to see the band if they do not know them and also the name of them. If you were to know them to would recognise the image instantly and therefore you may end up reading the contents page.

In the top left hand corner of the page there is a ‘Q’. The Q is the logo for the magazine, by having the logo continued through the magazine people will end up learning it and recognising it whenever seen. This also ensures that people know that all the pages were made by Q magazine, this can also show they are proud of their magazine.

Page 9: Front Cover Analysis -2-22

The magazine masthead is big and central making is stand out to the reader. This is the masthead that also appears on the front cover, this shows that throughout the magazine they like the masthead to be continued throughout. The red writing on the black background really makes the masthead obvious and noticeable. The word ‘Contents’ is then placed next to the masthead. The font size of both masthead and title straight away draw in your attention. Under this there are various sections named. for example ‘news’ which has different types of new that has being going on in the music industry yet also that is relevant to the magazine.

The whole page is well laid out, ensuring that there is enough space for everything that needs to be included within the page. The page does not look busy or unorganised, there is the right amount of information that is needed on the page. The layout looks professional, this gives a good impression of the magazine. The images included on the page go well with the layout, they are seen straight away and add more personality to the page. It looks as though time has been put into positioning everything.

The main image on this page is of Alex Turner from ‘Arctic Monkeys’ holding a guitar whilst singing into mic. Alex is not making any direct eye contact with the camera but instead his microphone. This can portray a sense that he is deep into his music and that his music is his main attention. Underneath this image there is a description on Arctic Monkeys and an event that had happened at one of their gigs. this may draw in the attention of Arctic Monkey fans.

Within this magazine there are many extras added which gives the reader a better insight into what information the magazine has. You can find these extras down the right hand side of the page. Each of them has a white font and a black background, by doing this they automatically stand out on the page. Also the capitalisation of the words makes them big and bold, meaning they will catch your eye.

On this particular magazine there is no reference as to which issue number the magazine is. However, this may be presented on the front cover and not the contents page. Even though the issue number is not on here, the date is. By having the date on the page it helps people to keep up to date with what magazine came out when and also even when the next issue will be coming out.

The colour scheme for this magazine contents page is mainly, black, white and red. By sticking to a colour scheme it keeps the magazine looking organised and professional. if a magazine were to have random colours that didn't co-ordinate the magazine wouldn't look professional. It look look messy and it would ut across a message that the people making the magazine advent put any thought into what they're doing.
