As reported last week, a delegation o concerned rate-payers appeared beore town council at its May 8thmeeting. What ollows is part two o what took place atthat meeting.

Te delegation, including Herman Klassen, Neil

Cameron, Jim Fossum and Eric Neueld (who was unableto attend uesdays meeting) explained to Council theirconcerns regarding the Minnedosa Regional Events Cen-tre (MREC) proposal.

Klassen, as spokesperson or the delegation, indi-cated that his group would l ike council to gather more in-ormation and cost estimates on the needed upgrades tothe present arena rather than just writing it of and ocus-sing solely on building a new costly acility. Back in June2007, Minnedosa Minor came to council asking them toconsider a major upgrade or the arena. At the time, theupgrade was estimated at approximately $1 million. It

was at that time, the council o the day, began pursuingthe possibility o a new arena which has developed intothe multi-use MREC.So what i it costs $2, 3 or 4 million? (to upgrade the

present arena)? Tat is still a ar cry rom $22 million (ornew acility), mentioned Klassen. Council has alreadyspent close to $1 million on MREC. Tis money couldhave made big improvements on the present arena. Teold arena has served this community or over 50 years.Dont mess with success! Tere does not appear to be anyexcess demand or ice time and the school enrollmenthas been declining or years.

Te mayor responded to this by explaining the situ-ation in the community o Russell, where it was decidedto redo their current acility rather than building new.Tey are currently at around $10 million. Teyre notnished yet, and they will still have an old building, saidOrr. our current arena was an older building beore itcame here rom Portage, and its been here 65 plus years. It is well past its best beore date.
