As I sit at my desk looking over the calendar for the year, I can’t help but think over the tough times. If you knew of all the years, of hopes and dreams and tears, you would know it didn’t happen over night. I was born in a trunk at the Princess Theatre in Pocatella, Idaho. This summer saw many noteworthy news topics, but the most important of these topics was undoubtedly the fi rst credit downgrade in United States history. On the 2nd of August the nation’s debt interest payment was due, but due to the previous debt ceiling the government could not acquire the funds needed to repay the debts. A bipartisan bill was passed to increase the federal debt limit to $14.6 trillion on the morning of the 2nd, but it did not prevent the credit downgrade from AAA to AA+ that our nation experienced this summer.

In other news, the GOP and the Tea Party are gaining momentum towards the 2012 elections, with Texas governor Rick Perry joining in the race a little later than most other candidates but managing to sweep himself up to the frontrunner position, closely followed by Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann. Each of the presidential candidates

from these two parties is promising change from Obama’s term, but due to a very high number of votes that are to be split, there is a high chance of president Obama being reelected.

As you may know, this summer saw the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the day this country was attacked by the Islamic extremists. The offi cial 9/11 memorial at ground zero opened on the eleventh, despite the protests of some Islamic and Atheistic groups that found the cross to be a specifi cally Christian symbol which showed a lack of respect to the people who died when the towers fell that did not hold Christian beliefs. Another memorial is in planning in Pennsylvania where United-93 crashed, but the government failed to approve an additional $10 million for the project.

The former director of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Khan, was accused of sexual harassment and rape of one of the maids in the hotel where he stayed. The French

politician found himself being interviewed about the matter on a live broadcast that is reported to have had thirteen million French viewers.

President Obama, outlining strategies that are to reduce unemployment and help pay back the national debt, proposed the American Jobs Act recently. The plan to put thousands of teachers back to work is also included in the bill, and what’s more, the bill calls for no tax increases whatsoever, which makes it semi-surprising that the republican side of congress has had numerous complaints about the bill’s legitimacy.

The NASA space shuttle program launched its fi nal shuttle before closing this summer, posing as a landmark of our innovation and perseverance, 42 years after the fi rst American shuttle launch.

Facebook started a campaign of heavy changes to the user interface that left many users discontent with the changes. Some changes include an enlargement of friends’ picture in the news feed, a constant update of all friend activity in the chat section, and several other minor changes that cumulatively slow the performance of older computers.
