SEATTLE TIMES NEWS SERVICES AND STAFF REPORTS NEW YORK — Terrorists hi- jacked two airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center today in coordinated attacks that brought down the twin 110-story towers. Within an hour, the Penta- gon outside Washington, D.C., also took a direct, devastat- ing hit from an aircraft. The fiery crash collapsed one side of the five-sided struc- ture, raising fears that the seat of government itself was under at- tack. Authorities were trying to evac- uate those who work in the twin towers. Thousands could be dead or trapped and injured, said a high- ranking police official. About 50,000 people work at the Trade Center. More than 20,000 people work at the Pentagon. American Airlines said its two aircraft were carrying a total of 156 people. United Airlines said two of its aircraft were hijacked and crashed, with a total of 110 aboard. The networks reported that hundreds of burn victims have been brought to New York hospi- tals and said victims covered in white sheets were lined up outside one hospital. About 10,000 emer- gency workers were at the scene. As many as 200 firefighters were reported missing, ABC reported.
