NEW YORK — Terrorists hi-jacked two airliners and crashedthem into the World Trade Centertoday in coordinated attacks thatbrought down the twin 110-story
towers.Within an
hour, the Penta-gon outsideWashington,D.C., also took adirect, devastat-ing hit from anaircraft. The fierycrash collapsedone side of thefive-sided struc-
ture, raising fears that the seat ofgovernment itself was under at-tack.
Authorities were trying to evac-uate those who work in the twin
towers. Thousands could be deador trapped and injured, said a high-ranking police official.
About 50,000 people work atthe Trade Center.
More than 20,000 people workat the Pentagon.
American Airlines said its twoaircraft were carrying a total of 156people.
United Airlines said two of itsaircraft were hijacked and crashed,with a total of 110 aboard.
The networks reported thathundreds of burn victims havebeen brought to New York hospi-tals and said victims covered inwhite sheets were lined up outsideone hospital. About 10,000 emer-gency workers were at the scene.As many as 200 firefighters werereported missing, ABC reported.
