Have you ever wondered if there is any special meaning associated with the colors and design of the

American flag?

On June 14, 1777, Congress adopted a resolution calling for a flag with thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, and with a blue canton or “union”, with thirteen white stars. The resolution defined the significance of the colors: “White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue, Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.”

The thirteen stripes and the thirteen stars, of course, represented the original thirteen colonies. The five pointed stars used as a symbol in the flag design was relatively rare until its incorporation into the American flag. They have since been used in many state flags and foreign flags. Based on the American usage, the star has come to be associated with unity, independence, or to represent the constituent parts of a nation.

Until 1818, an additional star and stripe was added as each new state was admitted to the Union. By 1816, it had become evident that the practice was not practical, and on April 4, 1816, a new scheme was made official. The Flag of the United States would have thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, and a blue canton on which a white star would be added for each state. Each star would be added to the flag on the July 4th following the admission of the new state to the Union.

move more

Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs, walk your dog, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it’s a stress buster. It doesn’t have to be in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class. But that’s great when you’re up to it. Meanwhile, move more.

Cut Fat

Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise.

Keep a positive mental outlook

There’s a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. You can’t be unhappy when you’re smiling or singing.

Essential Health Tips (The Basics to Practice Every Day)

*Contact your state regulatory agency for guidance. Manufacturers and regulators endorse recycling as the preferred method of disposal.

Compact Fluorescent

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are the most significant lighting advance developed in recent years. They combine the efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the convenience and popularity of incandescent fixtures. CFLs can replace incandescents that are roughly 3 to 4 times their wattage, saving up to 75% of the initial lighting energy. Although CFLs cost from 10 to 20 times more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they last 10 to 15 times as long. This energy savings and superior longevity make CFLs one of the best energy efficiency investments available. When introduced in the early- to mid-1980s, CFLs were bulky, heavy, and too big for many incandescent fixtures. However, newer models with lighter electronic ballasts are only slightly larger than the incandescent lamps they replace. CFLs come in integral and modular designs. Integral CFLs have a ballast and a lamp in a single disposable unit. Modular designs feature a separate ballast that serves about five lamp replacements before it wears out.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) come in a variety of sizes and shapes including (a) twin-tube integral, (b and c) triple-tube integral, (d) integral model with casing that reduces glare, (e) modular circline and ballast, and (f) modular quad-tube and ballast. CFLs can be installed in regular incandescent fixtures, and they consume less than one-third as much electricity as incandescent lamps do.
