The Northeast Harris County Chapter is planning an outstanding conference this year to be held in Spring, TX, at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites-Houston North Intercontinental, April 11-13, 2014. At the AAMA 57th Annual Educational Conference, held in Atlanta, GA, September 27-30, 2013, TSMA won an Excel Award for website development. Congratulations go out to Sherry Bogar, CMA, as TSMA website developer, for her hard work in maintaining the website. TSMA, also, was recognized for membership recruitment. TSMA has hosted two great meetings over the last year. “Wanted in Waco” meeting was hosted July 26-28, 2013. We kicked off our meeting with lunch at Waco’s famous Buzzard Billy’s and then we headed to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame for a tour of the Ranger museum. After the tour Ranger Patrick Pena gave us an amazing presentation on “Protecting Children Against Crime”. Members then went back to our host hotel La Quinta Inn & Suites, Waco South to finish up a great day of education with our very own Ann Naegele, CMA presenting on Heart Health. All in attendance were then treated to BBQ Baked Potatoes that was followed by the Research and Development Committee presenting the AAMA’s Key to Membership PowerPoint.

The TSMA Winter meeting took place in Dallas the weekend of January 25-26, 2014 at El Centro Community College. We were presented with three great CEU topics, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety and the Medical Assistant presented by Joan Becker, MBA; Engaging Students in the Classroom presented by Denise Griffin, MS and Ryan Walther, MHA and AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation and Thank you) presented by our very own Sally McGoldrick, CMA. Each topic was interactive making it a great experience for those in attendance. After lunch we took a tour of the “Sixth Floor: JFK Museum”. Not only did this give us the opportunity to walk around Dallas a little, but it gave us a glimpse at one of the great leaders of our nation. The tour was followed by a Research & Development committee meeting. Several of the items that were discussed included the new ARB recognition now offered by the AAMA, reaching out to TMA and local medical society to offer volunteers at their events as a way to get information about TSMA and AAMA distributed. We ended our day with a team building event at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. Everyone had a great time!

The TSMA Board received the following note from Ann Naegele, CMA after the TSMA Winter Meeting:

What a special thrill I experienced during the TSMA Winter meeting in Dallas. Not only were all the education sessions excellent but seeing everyone again makes me feel “glad to be back” with TSMA. Thank you, Sandra Alexander for obtaining the speakers, and opening the doors of El Centro College to hold our

meeting in. How do you thank someone for the special treatment received during our team

building excursion to The Medieval Times entertainment? To have everyone there celebrate my SURPRISE 70th birthday will not be forgotten.

I want to personally thank Sherry Bogar for the extra arrangements she made for me to be “Knighted and Crowned Birthday Queen”. Also, thank you Sherry for

arranging the front row seating for all of us. Even though our Green Knight didn’t do so well, we were the Winners.

Looking forward to visiting with more of you during our TSMA Conference in April. Don’t forget to make your arrangements early.

This is a summary of reports from the Delegates and Alternates attending the AAMA 57th Annual Educational Conference and House of Delegates

Delegates and alternates to the AAMA House of Delegates are determined by the number of active and associate members or a fraction thereof plus one delegate for each additional 400 active and associate members or fraction thereof. Delegates and alternates shall be active or life members in good standing with AAMA. The number of delegates to the House of Delegates is determined by those active and associate members (membership expiration date 12/31/13) whose dues were paid between 5/1/12 and 8/31/13. New and associate members who pay dues between 5/1/13 and 8/31/14 have a membership expiration date of 12/31/14 and are counted in the 2014 membership year for the 2015 House of Delegates. Last year TSMA was allowed 3 delegates to the AAMA House of Delegates and that will be again the number of record for the AAMA 57th HOD. Due to unfortunate employer obligations last year, the delegates and alternates changed prior to the HOD. The following members represented TSMA at the 57th Annual Educational Conference and HOD in Atlanta, GA, September 27-30, 2014: the first alternate, Sandra Alexander, MPA, CMA (AAMA), third delegate, Sally McGoldrick, CMA (AAMA), second delegate, Sherry Bogar, CMA (AAMA),TSMA, Vice President and first delegate, TSMA President, Cyndee Lundgren, BS, CMA (AAMA), PBT (ASCP).

All delegates/alternates attended the leadership meeting (CORE Curriculum), the Delegates/Alternates Orientation, credentials check-in, HOD Opening, Meet the Candidates and Reference Committees for report, bylaws and resolutions. The delegates participated in voting on bylaws, resolutions, AAMA Board of Trustees and AAMA Officers. This was the first year that HOD was done electronically by Turning Point. Voting electronically allowed the HOD to finish up the polling process in record time. During the HOD, Don Balasa, AAMA Executive Director and Legal Counsel lead the presentation from Robert Anthony, Deputy Director, HIT Initiative Group from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, CMS). Mr. Anthony addressed the AAMA HOD regarding the CMS Rule for Meaningful Use Order Entry (CPOE) and the credentialed medical assistants (for more information on the CMS Rule subscribe to “Legal Eye on Medical Assisting” through www.aama-ntl.org). A memorial, in honor of Darcy Atwood, CMA, Arizona Society of Medical Assistants member and honorary member of the New Mexico State Society of Medical Assistants was conducted by Ann Naegele, CMA at the opening of the AAMA HOD (you may remember Darcy for she attended the TSMA 56th Annual Educational Conference at South Shore Harbor in April last year). The HOD elected officers and trustees. There were four bylaw amendments approved and one resolution. One of the new bylaw amendments require that student members be enrolled in an ABHES or CAAHEP medical assisting school and limited to a onetime enrollment, selecting either a one year or a two year membership. The resolution passed establishes a discount to students for a two year membership for only $45, beginning in 2015 membership year. Other bylaw changes addressed active membership and dues policies.

There were over 644 members in attendance at the AAMA 57th Educational Conference from all over the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. At the Welcome and Awards Celebration, TSMA won an Excel Award for website development and Sherry Bogar, CMA (AAMA), TSMA Vice President, was recognized as the website chair! TSMA is proud of this achievement and congratulate Sherry! TSMA also won a certificate of achievement for membership. The delegates and alternate were able to attend educational sessions, the Awards Celebration, the Publisher’s Showcase and the President’s Installation Banquet.

On behalf of the delegates and alternate, we thank you, the TSMA membership, for your support and allowing us to represent you at the 57th AAMA Annual Educational Conference and HOD.
