Once again, when people are in need, the entire Field – Stevenson community came together to provide help. In a little over two weeks, the students, staff and parents of Field – Stevenson raised $865.00 to assist the people of Haiti.

In the past, the Field community has provided support for the aftermath of 9/11, the victims of the Pacific Ocean tsunami, and the people in New Orleans who were left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

Most of the money raised in this most recent effort was in the form of

Ryan O’Conner, a fifth grade student, has been selected as Field-Stevenon’s “School Citizen of the Year.”  Ryan was selected by the members of the fifth grade staff..

District 91, along with another 35 or so Districts in western Cook County, from an educational cooperative known as WEST 40.  Every year, each school in the co-op is asked to select one person to honor as their school Citizen of the Year. This is the most prestigious honor we can bestow upon any student.  And the choice is always difficult because there are so many qualified students. Ryan will be honored at a program that will take place on March 17th at the Mannheim Middle School.  At that time, each winner will cross the stage to

 The staff at Field Stevenson is pleased to announce the return of the At Home Tutor program due to the fact that it was a huge success last year.  It is a comprehensive teaching program that gives parents the opportunity to work 1-on-1 with their children to build academic skills. It

consists of 3 evening workshops from 6-7:30 pm.  Childcare is provided by the Middle School Junior Honor Society members and Mrs. Hibbitts.

  Comments from last year parent participants included:  “I think it was outstanding”, “I loved it, and it motivated me to become more involved in my children’s education.”   These were some of the reasons that the program returned this year.  There is also a new aspect of this program.  The workshops are also given in Spanish. One session has been held, on January 25th.  Two more sessions will be held on February 8th and 22nd to complete the program.  Other staff members instrumental in bringing At Home Tutor to Forest Park are Mrs. Rose Gronko and Mrs. Margie Gamboney. 

The choir had a very successful winter concert in January. The have already started their spring session and will be featured at the South Side Festival of the Arts on April 22, 2010 at Field-Stevenson. Any fourth or fifth grade students that are interested in joining the spring choir should talk to Ms. Dooley. Our fourth grade classes will be traveling to Betsy Ross Elementary school in March to celebrate “Music in Our Schools Month.” They will be performing for the students and showing off their musical skills through singing, dancing and playing instruments. Our third grade classes are well on their way

GREEN TEAM UPDATE

Mrs. Boucek’s third grade and Ms. Petrey’s fourth grade tied for the most cans collected in February. They voted to “symbolically” adopt a bottlenose dolphin from the National Wildlife Federation. $20 was also donated to the Haiti relief effort. We will now save our can recycling money until the end of the year. We will use the funds collected to purchase livestock from Heifer International. This organization “provides livestock and training so that families can improve nutrition and earn income for health care, shelter, and education for children. Each gift multiplies

On Wednesday, January 27, in recognition of a great second quarter, Field Stevenson hosted a Wheel of Wisdom celebration where teams of students and teachers competed to answer age appropriate questions.

Some students were called upon to spin a huge wheel which determined the questions.  The third grade was represented by teams Julio Luna-Pina and Renya Carrera, Sumeja Hodzic and Yessica Garcia, and Ryan Mintz and Jackson Steger.

Fourth graders included Essence Chambers and Olivia Mallett, Miles Guillen and Ranen Maddi, and Gerardo Garcia and Charlie Valdez.  On the fifth grade teams were Natalie Carrera and Sumayyah Singletary, Taviana Dunlap and Jessica Zwolen, and Kevin Wilson and Anthony Morris.

During the games, children sat in front of a huge prize board.  Several students won large inflatable microphones, and some students were given the chance to join a team to help answer questions.

Finally, teachers were invited to play.  Mr. Becker and Ms. Broecker were pitted against Mrs. Bogdan and Mrs. Perry,  Mrs. Uhlmann and Ms. Petrey.   And the winners were…

Mr. Becker and Ms. Broecker.  The PBIS team sends congratulations to all who participated and thanks to all students who exhibited enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.  Here’s to an even better THIRD QUARTER!
