stands for Early Learning Goal and children are expected to achieve most of these by the end of the year.

The number at the end of the objective denotes which bullet point within the age band it is.

If your child is struggling with the objectives given look at the objectives in the band below. If you feel that your child needs additional

-With your child write the sentence (you modelling writing each word and they copy – by the end of the week your child should be

writing most of the words without your support) :

-Once a man grew an enormous turnip. He tried to pull it out. The boy pulled. The girl pulled. The dog pulled. The turnip shot out.

The end.

-The words in red are words which must be learnt and cannot be sounded out. Look at the part of the word which is ‘tricky’ e.g. To – ‘t’ can

be sounded out but it is the ‘o’ sounds like an ‘u’.

-The words in green can be sounded out using ‘Fred Fingers’. This means you sound out the word and show how many sounds are in the word

e.g. g-ir-l needs 3 ‘Fred Fingers’. Show your child 3 fingers, ask them to do the same and then pinch each finger as the word is sounded out.

Repeat this several times before writing the word

-Add in a full stop

-Read the sentence back to check it makes sense before moving onto the next

Objective: w.40.7 Uses some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in

sequence.

w.ELG.2 They also write some irregular common words.

Maths -Warm up activities – count from 1-20 (see YouTube link)

-Counting in 2s (see YouTube link)

-Gather together 20 objects from around your home – all the objects need to be the same e.g. Lego bricks or grapes or 1p coins

-Demonstrate to your child placing the objects in order and touch counting them.

-Place the objects back together in a group and ask your child to place them in a line and touch count them – address any misconceptions like

counting too quickly, missing out an object, or missing out a number when counting.

-Place out a small quantity of the objects (up to 10 to begin with), count them and say – “I wonder how many I would have if I took (say a

number) away?”

-Demonstrate taking away the number you said and then counting what is left.

-Say “.. take away.. equals..”

-Give your child a number of objects and ask them to work out how many they would have if they took away a second amount.

-Repeat until your child understands what take away means.

Objective: n.ELG.2 Using quantities and objects, they subtract two single-digit numbers and count back to find the answer

children)

-State that you are going to have a discussion where there are no right and wrong answers.

-State they must use full sentences when speaking and use the word ‘because’ to justify their answers.

-Encourage your child to say whether they agree or disagree with your thinking.

-Watch the video of the elephant painting www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sfRMSpgbps

-Ask your child to discuss with you - What is art?

-You could demonstrate the answer “I think art is… because…”

then pinch each finger as the word is sounded out. Repeat this several times before writing the word
