the capital of the US State of Florida.

It has a population esti-mated at 181,400.

It covers a land area of 103 sq miles.

It is the 128th largest city in the United States.

It was awarded the All-America City Award by the National Civic League in 1999.

We are very pleased that you are coming to Florida State University (FSU). During your stay, we hope that the Center for Global Engagement, located in the The Globe Building (shown here) at the heart of the beautiful FSU campus, will be your home away from home.

This pre-arrival newsletter, from the FSU Center for Global Engagement’s Special Programs office, can help answer the questions that you may have about what you need to know before you get here.

Kimberly Kaiser

Is an International Affairs Master’s degree student.

Spent the first 5 years of her life in England

Has lived all over the US—from California to Florida

Speaks Spanish and has traveled throughout Europe.

Loves sports and animals - soccer, water polo, basketball, watching movies, and her little, white, fluffy puppy, Rue.

Shauna Gillooly

Is a 2nd year FSU student double majoring in International Affairs and Spanish, with minors in Communication and Economics.

Is originally from Clearwater, Florida, and grew up loving the beach.

Enjoys music, reading and running.

FSU Quick Facts

FSU is a comprehensive, national graduate research university that puts re-search into action for the benefit of our students and society.

The university is home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, funded by the National Science Foundation. These labs, among others, place Florida State University at the cutting edge of research and its application to industry.

Located in Tallahassee, Florida FSU has over 40,000 students that come from over 130 countries, all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

With approximately 41,000 students enrolled in Fall 2013, the student body is comprised of 76% undergraduate, 21% graduate and 3% unclassified. Women account for 55% of the enrollment, and minorities and international students comprise 32% of total enrollment.

In your carry-on (hand) luggage, pack your passport, any internal travel documents needed for travel in your home country, visa, DS-2019, SEVIS receipt and proof of insurance form — DO NOT put these documents in your suitcases that will be checked into the cargo hold!!!!

If you miss a flight, or your flight is cancelled, or you have

problems at the U.S. airport, please call the Special Programs staff :

If you do not have a working cell phone, don’t worry. Follow these steps:

Go to a pay phone and dial this toll-free (free call) number: 1.800.487.7646.

Enter the following pin number: 5241 4520 0810. Then dial either of the phone numbers for Meg Brodeur or

Dr. Robert Hughes, exactly as they are written above. We cannot help you if we do not know what is happening to you! Keep

us informed of any changes to your flight itinerary.

When you get to Immigration or Border Patrol at your first United States airport, make sure that your DS-2019 and passport are stamped J-1 D/S by the immigration officer. (If it is stamped F, B-1 or B-2, you will need to politely point this out to the officer at once since that is the WRONG visa category and can cause issues with your documentation).

Tips for Trouble-Free Travel to FSU

For the health and wellness of the campus community, the FSU campus is entirely tobacco-free. Please note that any smoking or tobacco products are strictly prohibited on the entire FSU campus.

Preparing for Your Trip

THINGS TO PACK

A laptop computer and an ethernet cable so that you can connect your laptop to the internet while at FSU and the Walt Disney World Resort®

An alarm clock Power adapters/converters Comfortable shoes for walking, and raingear including an

umbrella (useful on sunny or rainy days…) One set of clothing appropriate for business attire A few sets of clothing appropriate for business casual attire,

including summer outdoor golf attire (A polo shirt, shorts or slacks, recommended.)

Extra eyeglasses and contacts (Both of these are fairly expensive in the U.S.)

Any needed prescription medicines AND the prescription from the doctor

Pack in your carry-on:

Your immigration documents: passport and any internal travel documents needed for travel in your home country; visa, DS2019, SEVIS receipt, and proof of insurance form.
