Welcome

Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing your copy of FTX AUSTRALIA SP4, or installing this SP4 Update.

First released as a four-part series of regions from March 2008, it has proved to be Orbx's best selling addon

so far and was the first product for FSX that introduced hand-crafted landclass, vector data, and textures for

an entire continent.

This February 2011 Service Pack 4 (SP4) edition adds even more enhancements, landclass refinements and

customer reported fixes from the past eighteen months. Orbx's policy is that we will continue to refine and

improve all our products and many of these incremental service packs are no-cost upgrades.

So What Area Does FTX AUSTRALIA Cover?

In simple terms, FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 combines the separate regions (AU BLUE, GOLD, GREEN and RED) into a

single downloadable or DVD product covering the whole continent of Australia. You can explore any part of

the country without needing to switch between the regions shown in the map below - they all seamlessly

blend together and you'll actually see the landscape change from the temperate south to the lush northern

tropics to the red central desert as you fly around the country.

Page 4: Ftx Australia User Guide

IMPORTANT NOTICE

FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 is not a stand-alone program, but an addon pack for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

To use the terrain enhancements contained in this Orbx product, you must have first installed

your own purchased copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Service Packs

Microsoft released two service packs for the original Flight Simulator X, which were primarly designed to fix

bugs and enhance the original release. These were called SP1 and SP2. You can download these free service

packs from Microsoft’s FSInsider website: http://www.fsinsider.com/downloads/Pages/default.aspx

Please note that if you purchased the Acceleration addon or the Gold Edition (recommended) they have

already had the SP1 and SP2 service packs applied and no further updates are required.

Whilst installing these service packs from Microsoft is not mandatory for operation of the Orbx FTX addon, we

do highly recommend them since there are many bug fixes and performance improvements.

Windows 7 64-bit

Although not mandatory, for the best operation of Flight Simulator X, Orbx highly recommends that Windows

7 64-bit be installed, with at least 4GB of main memory, preferably 6GB. Our lab testing has shown that using

Windows 7 64-bit provides the smoothest and most trouble-free platform for FSX.

Quick Installation Guide

Whether you are installing Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 from the downloaded FlightSimStore wrapper installer or

the DVD purchased from an Orbx Reseller, the procedure is very similar.

DOWNLOADED FSS WRAPPER EDITION

STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Unzip the FlightSimStore.com (FSS) downloaded ZIP file. You should end up with multiple

SETUP_AUSP4.x data files, this PDF user guide and the FSS installer application

OrbxFTXAUSP4.exe

2 Run OrbxFTXAUSP4.exe

3 Fill in the Order Number, Date and Key when requested. This information would have been

emailed to you when you purchased the download version of FTX AU SP4 from FSS.

4 The wrapper will unwrap the Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening

installation screen. Please acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a

destination folder, since all Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder

5 Once the Orbx installer has completed, you will be prompted to run FTX Central. When you

do so, FTX Central runs its AU SP4 file management routines, which can take a little time.

6 When the main FTX Central screen is shown, simply select the [Australia] region and click the

[Apply] button. You will hear a confirmation 'ding' and you are ready to fly!

ORBX RESELLER DVD EDITION

STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Insert the FTX AU SP4 DVD into your PC's DVD drive. If you have autorun enabled, the

installer will start automatically, or prompt you to run setup_AUSP4.exe

If you don't have autorun enabled, please use Windows Explorer to open the DVD contents

then run the Setup_AUSP4.exe application

2 The Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening installation screen. Please

acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a destination folder, since all

Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder

3 Once the Orbx installer has completed, you will be prompted to run FTX Central. When you

do so, FTX Central runs its AU SP4 file management routines, which can take a little time.

4 When the main FTX Central screen is shown, simply select the [Australia] region and click the

[Apply] button. You will hear a confirmation 'ding' and you are ready to fly!

FTX Central Explained

FTX Central is the one-stop application which controls all aspects of Orbx's FTX regions and airports as you

purchase and install them for FSX. It's an easy to use tool that provides convenient access to the user manuals

and any Control Panels that come with FTX airports, plus other utilities in the Tools menu.

After running the FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 installer, there will be a shortcut to the FTX Central application in your

Windows Start Menu, under the Orbx program group.

When FTX Central is first run after the installer has completed, simply select Australia and then Apply.

From the main screen you can also view any PDF user guide document of Orbx products that are installed or

that you may purchase and install at a later time.

TIPS ON USING 'DEFAULT FSX'

• To restore your FSX to how it was before you installed FTX, simply select the Default FSX region.

• We recommend to always select Default FSX when installing non-Orbx addons

• If you are not sure about FTX working with another addon, simply select Default FSX before installing

Page 8: Ftx Australia User Guide

Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4.002 User Guide – May 2011 Page 8

FTX Central has other functions in its menus. From the Tools menu you can access the following:

Scenery Library Configuraton

This is a useful tool which allows you to control the 'insertion' point at which all the Orbx FTX entries are

placed in your FSX Scenery Library. We've added this function because in some case other scenery addons

need to be placed above FTX (for example, OZx)

If you select FTX Scenery Library Insertion Points option, you'll be presented with another window like the

one below which allows you to scroll through your FSX scenery library entries. You simply select the entry at

which all FTX scenery library entries are inserted above, and click on the 'Set Insertion Point' button.

Page 9: Ftx Australia User Guide

Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4.002 User Guide – May 2011 Page 9

The other function here is Validate Scenery.cfg - this should only be used when instructed by Orbx support

staff to validate that your scenery.cfg file is in the correct condition.

Reports

The reports tool simply scans the ORBX folders to report back on what products are installed. The other

function Validate Region Files is another debug tool which should only be used when instructed by Orbx

staff.

On selecting FTX Products Installed, you will see a pop-up window listing all the Orbx products installed and

their version numbers. The resulting window will look similar to the one below, but of course will vary

depending on which Orbx products you have installed. *

FTX Aero

The FTX Aero Tools menu item will only be displayed if you have purchased an Orbx FTX airport which came

bundled with the FTX Aero tool, a unique addon which adds custom textures to an airport's environment for

added realism. For more information about FTX Aero and how to use it, please consult the User Guide which

comes with the Orbx FTX Airports which have Aero bundled.

* Actual screens shown on the preceding pages may vary depending on Orbx products installed

FTX Lights Tweaker

This is a shortcut to the tool used to change the types and size of the 3D lights in FTX. See page 20 for more

information about this tool.

Flush Scenery Indexes

This is a tool which should only be used when instructed by Orbx support staff. It will force a flush of the

scenery indexes cache and generally it is not required to be used for general FSX use with FTX.

What is Custom Landclass?

Landclass are special files which reside in the scenery layer “pie”, and their role is to tell FSX what type of

ground texture to place in any given square kilometer cell. In other words, landclass files tell the simulator to

place a field here, a township there, forest here, and a railway yard there, and so on.

As far as we are aware, FTX is the first flight simulation product to feature totally hand-crafted landclass on

such a large scale. Many global or country-specific addon landclass products for FSX are created using various

data sources and compiled using automated scripts and then manually rectified for obvious errors.

Not so with FTX. The diagram below gives you an idea of the custom landclass which was shipped with FTX

AUSTRALIA SP4 . Every single square mile in the green highlighted areas was hand placed by expert landclass

developers, using a combination of many sources, including street maps, aerial photos, and topography charts

to name a few. Clockwise from top left; coverage for AU GREEN, AU GOLD, AU BLUE and AU RED regions.

The result is nothing like you have ever experienced before, with an almost photoreal feel to all areas which

have been edited, but with the added benefit of faster loading times, full five seasons’ support and hand-

placed custom autogen and library objects in every single kilometer of the region.

Eventually, like FTX Australia, entire countries will be covered completely with the FTX custom landclass, and

photoreal scenery products consuming thousands of gigabytes of your hard drives will be a thing of the past.

Quick Reference FSX Settings

The table below lists in a handy reference the minimum recommended settings required in FSX to enjoy FTX

AUSTRALIA SP4 the way Orbx designed it. These settings run well on most PCs and take particular advantage

of the custom mesh and photoreal imagery used in the scenery area.

If you use the settings below you will enjoy a high fidelity experience and good performance.

Setting Value Why?

Level of detail radius Large Reduces blurring of textures

Global Texture Resolution Max Best displays photoreal textures

Mesh Complexity 100 Better terrain definition

Mesh Resolution 10m 10m is recommended for best terrain results and also if you

have Orbx airports installed

Texture Resolution 7cm Sharpest roads and freeways

Scenery Complexity Extremely Dense How Orbx designed FTX AUSTRALIA SP4

Autogen Density Normal Best FPS versus detail

More discussion on this on page 19

Aircraft AI Traffic 16% Best balance

Road Vehicles 16% No need to set higher for AUSTRALIA SP4

Recommended FSX Slider Settings

Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with today’s modern hardware, will for most

people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of FTX

AUSTRALIA SP4 using the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable,

you can move certain sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to

gauge the effect.

The most critical slider in FSX is the Autogen Density slider. With the way FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 has been

designed, it has the single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for

this slider later.

So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX sliders to what is shown on the following pages.

You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the AUSTRALIA SP4 BASE SETTINGS

which is the recommended settings for medium spec PCs.

Page 14: Ftx Australia User Guide

Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4.002 User Guide – May 2011 Page 14

* Mesh resolution even though the mesh available for Australia is only 76m, we recommend a setting of 10m

so that you don't need to change this setting if switching between FTX Australia and FTX North America.

* Please refer to the Autogen Density Table further in this user guide for specific information about this slider

Page 15: Ftx Australia User Guide

Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4.002 User Guide – May 2011 Page 15

Page 16: Ftx Australia User Guide

Orbx FTX AUSTRALIA SP4.002 User Guide – May 2011 Page 16

The Autogen Density Slider

Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to

Extemely Dense in large cities like Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne will bring even the most powerful PC to its

knees. We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed.

The key thing to remember is that FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 is designed to be used both today and in the FUTURE,

meaning that we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a

standard which will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up.

Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed

to PCs as at January 2011, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'High End'

spec PC to be the Entry Level by early 2012, so of course as FSX gets older, your PCs are likely to get faster.

That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 you will get a good balance between

visuals and performance.

The 3D Lighting System

FTX uses a new 3D lighting system developed by Orbx and exclusive to our products. This system creates

multi-colored lighting for all roads in urban areas and major roads in towns. The lighting system is also

implemented as autogen in the textures themselves, so you will find cities are depicted very accurately and

you can actually see towns approaching during night flights over remote areas.

To provide you with the most flexibility, we decided to create a special little program called the FTX Lights

Tweaker, which will allow you to tune both the halo style and the effect size for the lights.

To access this application, from FTX Central, select the Tools | FTX Lights Tweaker option. The interface looks

like the screenshot below.

There’s not a lot to it. You select one of six “halo” effects (each has a description and a summary of its pros

and cons), and then select the size of the effect. Out of the box, FTX is set to the “REX1” halo, with a size of 11.

We found this to be the best balance between size and visibility range. You can play with the application as

much as you want until you find the right balance. FSX cannot be running while you run it however. A special

thanks to Tim Fuchs, developer of Real Environment Xtreme and Mark Poole for their contributions to the

halos in FTX.

Custom Orbx Weather Themes

We've included six custom weather themes with FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 . If you've used our previous FTX

Australia series, you will be familiar with Orbx Weather 1 through 4.

New to FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 are Orbx Weather 5 and 6 (originally shipped with Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest),

which are designed to create brooding, moody weatherscapes that hardened bush pilots revel in. In other

words, if you don't want to dial up real world weather and need a challenge for some outback adventures, dial

up Orbx Weather 5 or 6 for some real fun!

You can select these themes anytime before or during a flight and we've included a brief description of what

you can expect from the theme in the description text below the screenshot.

Product Technical Support

Orbx has a very simple support policy: “No question unanswered”. That means, should you have any questions

about FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 or its use, please feel free to register on the forums at fullterrain.com and then

log a support question in the FTX Payware Support Forum section. Orbx FTX experts will be available to review

your support questions and you will usually get a reply on the forums within 12 hours, often much sooner

than that.

To visit the our support forums, click on the button shown above from the fullterrain.com front page

or click on Help | Orbx FTX Support Forums from FTX Central

Please do NOT email support requests

Orbx provides world-class support on our forums, and it's the only way in which you can receive support for

FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 . Provided you adhere to the forum terms of use and have a legitimate copy of FTX

AUSTRALIA SP4 , you will always be offered our support at no cost as we work toward a problem resolution

each time.

However, if you email Orbx asking for support or have product queries, you will most likely not receive an

answer at all, since our policy is that all support is provided through our forums only.

Use the forum ‘Search’ function

Before you post a question, please try searching for the answer first, using the forum’s built-in search function

located on the forum menu bar.

What to Include in Your Support Forum Requests

If at all possible, this is what we’d like to see provided for each request you log:

• A separate post on the FTX support forums for each issue (don't tag new issue reports onto others)

• Include your ORDER NUMBER from your FTX AUSTRALIA SP4 purchase in your post or forum

signature section

• A screenshot to highlight what you are talking about

• A descriptive post title which clearly states what the issue is

• Detailed comments in your post about what you are reporting on

The Orbx support team is always on standby to assist you with any problems you may have, or will comment

on your issue reports. Please remember, our priority is fixing any urgent issues first, and addressing bug

reports second. Clearly though, any “show stopper” bugs will be given top priority though.
