W h O W e a r eThe Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China is the first academic institution established by a major Chinese university in cooperation with a leading north American university. The center serves to connect all 10 campuses of the University of California (UC) system with Fudan University in Shanghai. It brings together leading research scholars from both universities for academic events and facilitates cooperative research. The center promotes deeper mutual understanding between the U.S. and China.

Berkeley, brought together leading experts on this topic from four continents. Finally, we helped initiate the California-Shanghai Innovation Dialogue, which

brings together researchers, government officials, entrepreneurs and investors from both sides of the Pacific to share lessons on building the social ecology for an innovative society. All of these activities have furthered the goal of fostering a

mutually beneficial relationship between UC and Fudan University and, ultimately, a mutually beneficial relationship between China and the U.S.”

All schools advocate the importance of cross-pollination and collaboration, but rarely do such efforts succeed. Indeed, they often fizzle out soon after they begin. The workshops at the center are a clear exception. The program has attracted a consistent and diverse group of faculty, graduate students and visiting speakers from a wide range of fields, including economics, political science and sociology.

I have personally taken advantage of the workshops on multiple occasions to present my own research as well as to stay tuned in to what others are working on. having recently transitioned from being a doctoral student at UC San Diego to a faculty position at Syracuse University, I hope to reproduce some of this same spirit and energy offered by the workshops for the benefit of the local China research community here in upstate New York.

A professor of political science, LIN is a well-known scholar of political issues in contemporary China. he has published more than 10 books on politics and more than 100 articles in various journals and magazines.

fudan-teC de mOnterrey reSearCh Centeron May 18, 2015, the Fudan-Tec de Monterrey research Center for Studies of China and Latin America was officially inaugurated at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico. President of ITeSM Guadalajara campus, Mario Adrian FLoreS, and Fudan University Vice President LIn Shangli presided over the inauguration ceremony. na Chen of Fudan Development Institute gave a speech titled “education as the Backbone: An overview of higher education in China.”

Shanghai fOrum The international economic forum is hosted annually by Fudan University and sponsored by the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies. held on May 23-25, 2015, this year’s theme was economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia. The Fudan-UC Center and the Fudan-european Centre for China Studies at the nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen co-organized the panel on “european and American Perspectives on China’s Politics and Development.” The panel brought together a range of American and european perspectives to identify the multifaceted dynamics and challenges of Chinese development in the global context.

Politics of Stability Maintenance in China Workshop | Aug. 21-22, 2014 Leading sociologists and political scientists from China, hong Kong, Taiwan and the U.S. presented their latest original research at the workshop.

End of the Chinese Economic Miracle?Debate and live streaming online | Oct. 23, 2014 renowned China scholars Barry nAUGhTon and Victor ShIh led teams of student debaters to argue for and against the motion that the house believes that the Chinese economy will collapse in five years. ShIh’s team—the “proposition”—defended the motion, while naughton and his “opposition” team argued against it. By adopting an oxford style debate, the audience was asked to take its own stance before and after the event.

Conference on Religion in China Today: Resurgence and Challenge Conference | Nov. 3, 2014This conference brought together distinguished Chinese and American scholars for a dialogue about the causes and political consequences of the development of a remarkable resurgence of religious belief and practice in China over the last three decades. Zhuo Xinping, director of Institute of World religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, gave a public talk on “religion in China Today: Challenge and hope” with his observations on these and other recent developments.

The Field of Guanxi (关系) StudiesConference | March 6 - 7, 2015This conference brought together more than a dozen experts from around the world to share their recent research about guanxi, including its historical and cultural foundations and contemporary evolution along with China’s reform and globalization. It was held at UC Berkeley.

Governance in China: Fudan-UC Young Scholars WorkshopWorkshop | May 14 - 15, 2015 Fifteen young scholars from the UC system and Fudan University took part in this workshop. Panels ranged from public health and the environment to finance and regulation as well as media, political culture and resistance and accommodation.

China’s New Agenda: National Governance and DevelopmentDialogue | May 19, 2015 This special event was featured as a dialogue between Susan ShIrK and LIn Shangli—two of the most experienced observers of Chinese politics. Their discussion explored the new paradigm of XI Jinping’s governance model as well as the future of U.S.-China relations.

CalifOrnia-Shanghai innOVatiOn dialOgueConference | Feb. 5 - 6, 2015 For its inaugural forum, the California-Shanghai Innovation Dialogue gathered high-level business, political and academic leaders from California and Shanghai at UC San Diego for conversations on topics crucial to the development of both regions. Participants explored growth opportunities in light of each region’s innovation ecosystem alongside their distinct—and parallel—challenges. The two-day event included a public panel on “how innovation works in California and Shanghai,” featuring Jin LI, Fudan University vice president, and Jim WUnDerMAn, Bay Area Council president and Ceo. In summary, more than 45 speakers and panelists participated in the conference, which focused on three different facets of California and Shanghai’s relationship in innovation: innovation excellence alliance, innovation ecosystems and lessons of entrepreneurship. The next dialogue is scheduled to take place in Shanghai in 2016.

China Town Hall: Issues in U.S.-China Relations Oct. 16, 2014 The program opened with a webcast featuring U.S. President Jimmy CArTer discussing 35 years of U.S.-China relations in conversation with national Committee on U.S.-China relations President Steve orLInS. Local speakers included Lyle MorrIS, project associate for rAnD Corp., and Susan ShIrK.

Spotlight on Hong Kong | Oct. 19, 2014richard MADSen, Susan ShIrK and Victor ShIh held an informal discussion on the core issues affecting Hong Kong-mainland China relations.

How High Is Too High? Investment Share and the Chinese Economy | Nov. 18, 2014ZhAnG Jun, of Fudan University and Barry nAUGhTon explained why China’s investment share is most likely to be overestimated by the China national Bureau of Statistics.

The Rule of Law in China: Prospects and ChallengesJan. 14, 2015 The resolution that emerged from october 2014’s Fourth Plenary session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee promised aggressive and far-reaching legal reforms. The panelists discussed the realistic situation of the rule of law in China. Panelists included Susan ShIrK, WAnG Zhiqiang of Fudan University Law School and Benjamin VAn rooI of UC Irvine.

Hukou Reform and Rural Dispossession in ChinaJan. 20, 2015Joel AnDreAS, associate professor of sociology of Johns hopkins University, reexamined the evolution of the hukou system, focusing on access to rural land and considering the implications for the rural population of the current shift from hukou-based to market-based land rights.

The Rule of Law Under Xi Jinping | Feb. 24, 2015Jerome Cohen, professor of law at new York University School of Law, discussed recent developments in China’s legal system as well as the fallout from the ZhoU Yongkang corruption case and the recently announced decisions following the Fourth Plenum.

U.S.-China Economic Relationship: Opportunities and Prospects | March 2, 2015robert horMATS, vice chair of Kissinger Associates Inc. and former secretary of state for economic, energy and environmental Affairs, discussed China’s foreign policy under XI Jinping, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by the U.S. as China’s influence abroad continues to expand.

China’s Economic Strategy in the Midst of the ‘New Normal’ | April 28, 2015ZhAnG Xiaojing, professor and head of the macro-economics department at the Institute of economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, discussed how the economic growth rates in China have slowed such that many are wondering if the country will be able to maintain the stability it has achieved over the past two decades.

China’s Powerful Patriots: Nationalist Protest in China’s Foreign Relations | May 20, 2015Jessica Chen WeISS, Yale University assistant professor and MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies fellow, discussed how that nationalist street demonstrations can provide diplomatic leverage for authoritarian governments that are not electorally accountable to public opinion, enabling Chinese and other authoritarian leaders to signal their intentions and tie their hands in international negotiations.

China’s Coming Water Crisis | May 27, 2015Dai QInG, activist and journalist, explored how China’s upcoming water crisis will affect its economic and political future—a dilemma shared by both China and California is the increased scarcity of water owing to poor resource management and climate change.

Economic Impact of Mobile Technologies in China and India | June 2, 2015nate TIBBITS, senior vice president of government affairs at Qualcomm, Inc., and David MIChAeL, senior partner at Boston Consulting Group, discussed their research on how mobile technology has had an enormous impact on the global economy, putting a spotlight on China and India as two case study markets.

C h i n a r e S e a r C h W O r k S h O P SThis interdisciplinary workshop series features current research by faculty, visiting scholars and advanced graduate students at the dissertation-writing stage. It is co-sponsored by the 21st Century China Program, and 17 workshops were held during the academic year.
