Dear Parents and Carers,

We are now three weeks into the Term and have had a very settled start. Thank you to everyone who has spoken to either Kristian or myself regarding the changes to school leadership this Term, your support and that of our students and staff has been greatly appreciated and has had an enormous impact on just how positive a start to the Term we have had. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome John Corbett to our staff for this Term. John is teaching PE while Kristian is in the role of Deputy Principal.

This Term we have a number of celebrations that we will be involved in. The first of them, National Science Week, is this week. Many of children will be involved in a number of Science based activities throughout this week and coming weeks to celebrate all things Science. In week 5 (22-26 August) we will celebrate Book Week. This year’s Book Week theme is Australia! Story Country. The highlight of Book Week will be our Book Week assembly on Thursday 25/8 at 2:15pm. On this day students are also encouraged to come to school dressed in an Australiana theme. Later

this Term our Year 6/7 students will also be showcasing all of the wonderful work that they have been doing in Genius Hour through our Genius Hour Expo. On Friday 19 August we will be attempting to head to the beach as a whole school for the World Ocean Day photo shoot that was postponed from last Term. Hopefully the weather will be in our favour this time around.

Student Absences If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please contact the school, in person or by phone on the morning to notify us of a reason. Regular attendance at school is vital for your child’s learning; however we know that there are times when students are unable to attend school for various reasons. Families are able to apply for an exemption for extended family holidays and this needs to be done to prior to your holiday. It is a DECD requirement that we follow up all student absences to ascertain the reason for the absence and support families to develop good attendance habits.

Bikes Over the past couple of weeks we have had a few instances where students who ride their bikes to school have had them tampered with or damaged once they have been locked in the bike racks. I have spoken to all of students about treating other people’s bikes with respect at last week’s assembly but I would also ask that you speak with your children about the same thing and also to report any incidents that they may see of bikes and scooters being tampered with to a staff member.

Year 6/7 Football Huge congratulations to our Year 6/7 Football team who played on Adelaide Oval last Saturday night in the final of the Premier’s Cup. We are very proud of the team’s efforts in this competition and the sportsmanship displayed by the boys was outstanding.

Open Morning Last Friday we hosted our third Open morning for the year. The morning was attended by 45 parents who are looking to send their children to send to Fulham North from 2017. Kristian and I talked to them about all of the great programs and events that we run here at Fulham North. Feedback from those that attended was very positive and we look forward to many of these families joining our community in the future. Our final Open Morning for 2016 will be held on Friday 28 October.

Father’s Day Stall On Thursday 1

st September we will be holding our annual

Father’s Day stall. Students will have the opportunity to visit the stall with their class to purchase a gift for their Dad or Grandpa. Gifts will start from $2.

Kind regards, Russell Barwell

FATHERS’ DAY STALL The Fathers’ Day stall will be our next fundraiser for the year. We have lots of little gifts for your child to select from, ranging in price from $2 to $6. The stall will be held on Thursday, 1

st September from 9.00am until

Classes harvested their garden plots and washed the produce in preparation. There was a bumper crop of broccoli, celery, carrots, beans, cauliflower, leeks etc. This was topped up with some other soup vegetables such as pumpkin and onions to make 4 delicious varieties - pumpkin, minestrone, sweetcorn and bacon and a surprising hit, 'Shrek Soup'. Many students tried some of the soups for the first time and commented favourably on the taste and filling nature. Many thanks to the parents who supplied cooking utensils and especially Tonia Camporeale, Jo Burns, Nicola McGranaghan, Nicky Parkinson and Monica Kotlarski who assisted in the cooking of the soups. Well done also to the Enviro Kids who did a lot of the preparation. We look forward to Giant Salad Day in Term 4. Enviro Committee

SPORTS NEWS

FOOTBALL Year 6/7 6/8/16 Fulham North 2.1.13 defeated by Flagstaff Hill 4.5.29. Goal scorers – 1 each to Chris Campbell and Jack Hawke. A terreific opportunity for the boys to play on the Adelaide Oval as a curtain raiser to the Adelaide Crows game on Saturday night. A night the boys and their parents will never forget. The boys put in a gallant effort kicking the first goal of the game and played with courage, grit and determination. With tears in the mums’ eyes and a lump in the throat of the dads our boys came second, but did Fulham North proud with their game and sportsmanship. The Premiers Cup was not be ours this year. Check out www.sanfl.com.au for photos of the day. Year 6/7 30/7/16 Fulham North 8.11.59 defeated Norwood zone 4.8.32. Goal scorers – Henry Mapleson 3, Bailey Durant 2 and 1 each to Marco Grelli, Billy Hawke and Timothy Good. Fulham North represented Woodville West Torrens zone and played against the Norwood zone to make the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval for Premiers Cup 2016. Well done Owls and good luck for the Grand Final. Year 4/5 6/8/16 Fulham North 5.6.36 defeated Star of the Sea 2.2.14. Best Players – Manning Cleland, Luka Dobrovolski and Zak Hitch. Goal scorers – 1 each to Kody Hansen, Peter Garuccio, Luka Dobrovolski, Zak Hitch and Jack Richardson. FNPS got off to a slow start in slippery conditions. They were down by a goal at half time. The team worked really hard against a strong Star of the Sea and turned the game around by winning the contested ball, keeping position, hard tackling and leading into place. Selfless team work produced fantastic third and fourth quarters to run out winners at the final siren. Year 4/5 30/7/16 Fulham North 13.9.87 defeated White Friars 2.5.17. Best players – Manning Cleland, Peter Garuccio and Jacob Hill. Goal scorers – Luka Dobrovolski, Jevan Phillipou and Jack Richardson all 2 each and 1 each to Manning Cleland, Brady Smith, Luke Pope, Jacob Hill, Thomas Brown, Charlie Croft-Speake and Jacyb Paris-Hewitt. Another win by the undefeated Year 4/5 team. Good sportsmanship showed by all players. Year 2/3 6/8/16 Fulham North 7.0.42 defeated by Star of the Sea Gold 8.5.53 Best Players – Ethan Hansen, Dylan Turner, Zak Fox and Raja Jamal.

Goal Scorers – Jamie Hitch and Zak Fox with 2 goals, Ethan Hansen, Toby Clogg, Dylan Turner all with 1 goal. Star of the Sea had a large physical presence, as they took to the field and lined up next to the young owls. The first quarter was one way traffic as the Owls appeared intimidated by some large opposition. To the young Owls credit they responded in the second quarter and went in hard for the ball. Raja Jamal emerged from the bottom of several packs of players. Kicking and running to space the Owls got out of the back to kick straight and score. The game continued to be a very even affair for the rest of the game. Dylan Turner took several marks to put Fulham back into attack. Ethan Hansen dominated the ruck duel. Archie Rawlings was making his presence felt in the mid field. Zak Fox and Jamie Hitch were dangerous up forward. The Owls fought out to the final siren for a narrow loss. Year 2/3 30/7/16 Fulham North 13.4.82 defeated Woodville Green 5.2.32 Best players – Archie Rawlings, Marley Hansen, Jamie Hitch and Toby Clogg Goal Scorers – Archie Rawlings 3, Jamie Hitch, Ella Clogg and Zac Fox all with 2; Lucas Worden, Ethan Hansen, Marley Hansen, Bailey Forrest, Jack Trotter and Toby Clogg all with 1. Archie and Jamie both scored a goal for Woodville. This week Fulham North played Woodville Green. They were short of players, with up to 7 owls playing each quarter for Woodville. The key message for the game was to share the football. Archie Rawlings displayed unselfish sharing when playing for both teams. Jamie Hitch and Toby Clogg passed off to a team member mate at every opportunity. Marley Hansen hand balled every time she got the ball. Bailey Forrest ran to space all game. Nate Tredrea’s marking and kicking have improved greatly. Lucas Worden’s fend off, show he is growing in confidence with every game. A great game by the young owls, whose team work continues to improve. Excellent work! SOCCER 2/7/16 U6 Blue Fulham North vs Alberton Another great win from our little owls against Alberton. Great scoring by Leo. Fantastic teamwork by Logan. Nathan and Denny working hard in defence. Great footwork improvement by Julian and Gabriel. U6 White Fulham North vs North Adelaide Great team work on display with fantastic defence by Vivaan, Ruby and Shilah, accurate passing to team mates to set up goals by Mackenzie and goals to Louis and 5 goals to Jude. Well done all! 30/7/16 U6 Blue Fulham North vs Torrensville Gold Fantastic win by our little Owls defeating Torrensville. Leo kicking all the goals! Great teamwork by all!

U6 White Fulham North vs Alberton Great to see some fantastic footwork and passages of play by all. Great defence by Mackenzie, Ruby, Shilah and Vivaan with goals to Louis and Jude. U7 Fulham North def Prospect Black 7-0 Goal scorers Kobe 1, Matthew Ross 2 and Jack Allcock 4 Another good game with lots of team effort. U8 Blue team Fulham Nth def St Francis Lockleys Red 1-0 The team was up to the challenge and Toby Clogg slotted the only goal of the day with a cracking left foot into the corner. Great running from Caelan Turner and the defensive work from Cohen Stephens, Jordi Thomas and our sweeper Nicky Romeo made it difficult for their forwards. Some great saves in goal by Sam Parkinson made sure we got the win. Thanks to Toby King who filled in from the other team who showed plenty of determination and had plenty of skills on show. Well done boys keep going and listen to your coach. U8 White team Fulham North def St Josephs Hindmarsh 4-2 Goal scorers Jacquyn 2 and Caelan 2 Great team work and passing between the teammates to support the goal kickers. Some great work in defence by Toby and Holly. U10 Our Lady of Mount Carmel def Fulham North 3-0 Exciting game, evenly matched good overall game, well done team! 6/8/16 U6 Blue Fulham North vs Torrensville Blue Great win once again by our little owls. Fantastic effort by all our boys, Leo kicking goals, Denny guarding the ball, long kicks by Nathan, attacking by Logan, Gabriel and Julian defending. Go the owls! U6 White Fulham North vs Torrensville Gold Fantastic to see everyone working hard on putting pressure on the opposition. Fantastic defence by Ruby and Mackenzie, great clearances by Vivaan, chasing down by Shilah and Jude and accurate passing and positional awareness shown by Louis. Goals to Louis, Jude, Ruby and fantastic first goad for Mackenzie, well done team! U7 Fulham North def Lockleys North Blue 2-1 Goal scorer Kobe Curness 2 Under pressure from strong opposition the team worked hard for a deserved win. U8 Blue team Fulham North def St Francis Lockleys Blue 2-0

Exciting game against another strong team from St Francis. It was a very tight first half and with some great teamwork Cohen Stephens scored the first goal of the match with a cracking shot past the goalie. We were unlucky with some chances and the twins Luke and Lachlan Stock provided plenty of help up front and were unlucky not to get a goal today. Nicky Romeo and Sam Parkinson were rocks in the back lines with big clearance kicks saving us many times with Jordi Thomas one of our most courageous players. After being Goalie in the first half Caelan Turner came on and provided plenty of drive scoring the second goal getting past a few players on the way. Well done boys U8 White team Fulham North vs St Francis Lockleys Red 1-1 Jacquyn was the goal scorer, assisted by Toby. Great teamwork, across both defence and attack from the whole team. U10 Nazareth def Fulham North 3-1 Great goal from Riley Turner over the head of the keeper. Good team work, with players passing ball and looking for leads, good defence by William P and Phil Ivanovic. Proud of the girls in the team Terran, Marni, Ruby, Narissa, and Rachel who do not shy away from tackling the opposition and more than often winning the ball.

Theme: ‘Australia: Story Country

This year at Fulham North Primary, we are celebrating Book Week during week 5, August 22nd– 26th.

The theme for Book Week is, ‘Australia: Story Country’.

Book Fair

During Book Week, a Book Fair will be held in the Library/Resource Centre from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th,

August. Students will be able to add to their personal libraries by buying quality books from our Scholastic

Book Fair. The school receives a generous commission based on the number of books sold. Last year we were

able to purchase over $1500 worth of books for the school Library/Resource Centre. On Monday, students will

visit the Library/Resource Centre to complete a ‘wish list’. After that, books will be on sale before school from

8:30am and after school for the rest of the week.

Book Week Event / Assembly

As part of our Book Week celebrations, students are asked to dress up in an Aussie story theme. This might

include characters from Australian novels, cork hats, bush dancing costumes, green and gold etc. Costumes

need to be organised at home by students and their parents.

A special Book Week event / assembly will be held in the gym on Thursday at 2:15pm.

Room 12 will run the Book Week assembly with an Aussie book flavour. There will be no formal awards,

announcements etc. during this event/assembly.

In Performing Arts Room 5 and Year 3, 4 and 5 students have been working on a bush dance unit. These

students will perform bush dances they have been learning during their Performing Arts lessons.

Parents and Caregivers are welcome to attend.

Class activities for Book Week

As part of Book Week, classes will be engaging in special literature based activities to celebrate books and

reading.

Tuesday 23rd August

Rooms 1-5 Foundation and Year One students will rotate across the five classes between 9:25 and 3:10 to take

part in different literature based activities that focus on the shortlisted books or the Book Week theme.

Rooms 22 and 23 will celebrate books and reading with three group activities based on Australian books and

Book Week books. Junior Primary students in Rooms 1-5 and Room 23 will also engage in Book Week activities

during their library lesson on Friday.

Wednesday 24th August

Year 5 students in Rooms 16 and 17 will have the opportunity to particulate in sharing literature and Book Week

activities during the afternoon.

On Friday 26th August students in Year 3 and 4 will engage in a Book Week activities program.

Our Year 6 and 7 students are planning and organising lessons based on the story they wrote for their Mayoral

Make-a-Book entry. They will read their story to their buddies and follow up their reading and discussions with

a fun activity based on the book they have created.

Mayoral Make-a-Book competition

Many of our students enter the Mayoral make a book competition conducted by the Charles Sturt Library. In

the past we have had many successful students winning prizes for their efforts. Entries are due at Charles

Sturt on Library Friday 26 August which is the end of Book Week. This year, our Year 6/7 students are writing

stories for their Junior Primary buddy classes.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Just a reminder, the Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes on the 9th of September. It is an expectation that

all students complete the challenge.
