Learning at Christ’s

Our core purpose is to provide all members o our community

with the skills necessary to become outstanding learners both

whilst they remain at our school and also throughout their lives.

We encourage everyone to develop independent learning skills

and to support each other in achieving this important goal.Progress is requently monitored, and parents and carers are

kept up to date with inormation to assist their learning.

In year 7 students study English, Mathematics, Science, R.E, ICT, Technology,

a Modern Foreign Language, Drama, Music and Art and combined humanities

delivered by our Personalised Alternative Curriculum Experience (P.A.C.E.)

P.A.C.E. is a skills based initiative that aims to build on the excellent practice at

primary school in order to help our students move into secondary education and

equip them with the ability to learn more effectively. Ofsted have rated P.A.C.E.

as an outstanding aspect of the curriculum in the last two inspections, June 2008

and January 2011.

In years 8/9 students follow all the above subjects as well as History, Geography,

Religious Education and Citizenship. We aim to ensure a broad and balanced

curriculum so that students are equipped for future success at Key Stage 4.

The Key stage 4 curriculum has been designed to ensure that students, where

appropriate, can study the core components of the new English Baccalaureate;

English, Mathematics, Science, a Modern Foreign Language and either History or

Geography. As a Church school all students study R.E. (full course) to GCSE as

well as 2 other options taken from Design Technology, Music, Food Technology,

Textiles, P.E, Art, ICT, ASDAN, a second language, Citizenship or a second

humanity subject (either History or Geography.)

Every student has a personal email address and access to the internet throughtheir own user space on the school network. We have four dedicated ICT suites

and numerous other access points around the school. In addition all classrooms

have interactive whiteboards. Our recently updated website also allows parents

and students to access our Virtual Learning Environment (V.L.E.)

At Christ’s we use the V.L.E. platform to enhance the learning of our students

outside the classroom. It allows pupils and parents access to learning materials

from home including lessons and homework, in addition to parents having access

to their son/daughter’s attendance and behaviour record.

Through our excellent Learning Support Department, students with special

educational needs are supported throughout the curriculum in a variety of ways

with individual support from our Learning Support Teachers and Assistants.

In many areas our classroom facilities are rst class. We have state of the art

science and technology suites which include laboratories, specialist technology

rooms, preparation rooms and a food technology lab. Our separate music block

houses an enviable central performance studio and numerous practice rooms. The

music block also incorporates a purpose built drama studio and there are regular

school productions which are performed in our drama hall.

Our students enjoy a wide variety of sports both onsite and at other sporting

venues in the Borough. Our well equipped Sports Hall and outdoor facilities which

include tennis courts, netball courts, football and rugby pitches, cricket nets and a

new climbing wall are enjoyed by both our students and the wider community.

Life at Christ’s

For young people to develop and thrive it is essential they have

an environment in which they eel happy, sae and secure.

Our ‘Behaviour or Learning’ procedures set out clearly our

expectations regarding students’ conduct at school and are

a ramework within which we provide a caring and riendlyatmosphere where learning can develop. In addition, we believe

that the quality o the experience or students is as important as

academic attainment. To this end, we create many opportunities

or personal, spiritual and social development as well as

oering students leadership opportunities and responsibilities.

Our facilities for Music and Drama are excellent and the many performances and

productions that we put on are very successful, they provide satisfaction and an

enormous sense of achievement for all who take part.

At Christ’s we also aim to widen young people’s experience and aspirations

by creating opportunities to learn across ten broad areas of activity, inside andoutside school, in areas such as sports, the arts or through voluntary activities.

Prayer and worship are an integral part of our lives at Christ’s. We appreciate that

as young people grow and develop, they sometimes need to be quiet and stand

apart from their busy lives at school. We try and make sure that time and space

for spiritual development is built into these formative years; and from September

2011 we have created a ‘sacred space’ area where students can take ‘time out’

for personal reection from their busy lives.

The school offers students a wide range of opportunities for extra curricular

activities covering a variety of interests such as ski trips, theatre outings, French

exchange trips, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, singing in our school choir

and many more.

All students are allocated to one of four houses: Anne, Bentley, Edward and

Magdalene. There are a number of inter-house activities during the year which provide

opportunities for healthy competition that give a sense of belonging to a ‘family’.

Christ’s School 9

“At Christ’s School our aim is to equip students

with appropriate and transerable InormationComputer Technology (ICT) skills needed in

today’s ever changing world.”

Christ’s School, a Healthy School

At Christ’s we are acutely aware o the need or us all to be

healthy, and to lead and encourage a healthy liestyle. We want

all our students to be healthy and achieve at school and in

lie. We believe that by providing opportunities or enhancing

emotional and physical health, we will improve long term health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise

achievement or all.

Students are encouraged to take part in many healthy extra-curricular activities

that go on at lunch time or after school. Our sporting facilities are rst class, with

a sports hall good enough to be used by the New Zealand All Blacks when they

visit, and acres of sports elds for outdoor activities. Other activities include Art

and Technology clubs, Science and Mathematics competitions, ICT, dance as well

as many others.

Full use is made of expert coaching, and the link with our Schools Sports

Coordinator has had a dramatic impact upon both competitive opportunities andthe breadth of activities available to students.

There is a full commitment to encouraging students to have a balanced lifestyle

by undertaking sporting activities and eating a healthy and balanced diet. This

approach is supported throughout the school, but particularly within PE, Food

Technology, Science and in the food served in our newly refurbished canteen.

The Uniqueness of the Individual

In all the world there is nobody like you. Since the beginning

o time there has never been another person like you. Nobody

has your smile, your hands, and your hair. Nobody owns your

handwriting, your voice. You’re special.

Nobody can paint your brush strokes. Nobody has your taste for food or music or

dance or art. Nobody in the universe sees things as you do. In all time has never

been anyone who laughs in exactly your way.

You’re different from any other person who has ever lived in the history of the

universe. You are the only one in the whole of creation who has your particular

set of abilities. Nobody in the universe can reach the quality of the combination of

your talents, your feelings.

Through all eternity no one will ever walk, talk, think or do exactly like you. You’re

special. You’re rare and in all rarity there is enormous value and because of your

great value the need for you to imitate anyone else is absolutely wrong. You’re

special, and it is no accident you are. Please realise that God made you for a

special purpose. He has a job for you to do that nobody else can do as well as

you can. Out of the bill ions of applicants, only one qualied. Only one has the

unique and right combination of what it takes and that one is you.

You are special.
