In discussion with Julian Gallant, Robert will explain how he rediscovered the excitement of the silent movie era where movie scores were instant creations. He is a Professor at UWL and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, and specialises in matching music to film and other live action activities

Robert will improvise music to two of James Sibley Watson’s earliest experimental silent films:

� The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), made with Melville Webber, based on the short story of Edgar Allen Poe, and

� Lot in Sodom (1932), based on the biblical story from Genesis 19

The film recalls the experiences of an unnamed Jewish musician trapped in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. He begins the war as a member of a happy family, living with his father, mother and two sisters; by the end, he has not only lost all of them, but has been forced to live like an animal, stuck in an attic and living on scraps, for fear of discovery.

The Studios rarely open their doors to the public owing to their production and film schedules, but are keen to be involved in our festival. The tours will show what life in a very busy production complex is like. Subject to the day’s schedules, the Studio Management aims to take in as much of the historic site as possible, including some of the sound stages, props area and sets under construction that are used in the making of film and TV productions

As a preface to our concert in St Barnabas Church, Tamsin will be in conversation with our Artistic Director, Julian Gallant, discussing the Sibelius Violin Concerto and her life as an internationally acclaimed soloist at the forefront of classical music

(to about 9.30pm) Orchestral Concert Ealing Youth Orchestra Soloist: Tasmin Little (violin) Conductor: Leon Gee The orchestra is being led in a masterclass workshop by Tasmin Little on 6th February as part of the festival’s continuing outreach programme

Ealing’s finest young musicians play big-hearted, Romantic music. Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is one of the most popular pieces of all time. Dvorak’s New World Symphony has that great “Hovis” tune. Mieczyslaw Karlowicz was a mature master from Poland whose music we are only now beginning to discover:

This modern Ealing film is one of the highest grossing independent British films of all time

St Trinian's, a school for "young ladies" with its anarchic doctrine of free expression, brings together a motley crew of ungovernable girls who, using their wit and ingenuity, save the school from bankruptcy. The film stars Talulah Riley, Rupert Everett, Gemma Arterton, Colin Firth, Russell Brand, Lena Headly - to name but a few - and is a reboot of the earlier series of five films (1954 to 1980) based on the works of Ronald Searle.

(to about 9.30pm) Orchestral Concert Ealing Symphony Orchestra Soloist: Kristine Balanas (violin) Conductor: John Gibbons

Ealing’s very own orchestra will be performing once again, marking the anniversaries of Agincourt and Waterloo as well as performing a UK première

The ESO is reckoned to be one of the finest volunteer orchestras in the country. Tonight they play Roy Douglas’ 1936 orchestration of Chopin’s piano pieces for ballet, followed by the UK premiere of an early 20th century Violin Concerto. They then play Elgar’s rarely heard Polonia and close by marking the anniversaries of Agincourt and Waterloo with Walton’s shimmeringly brilliant music for cinema:

The choir will be performing very well known songs that cover a variety of styles including Big Band, Pop, Traditional Choral and Musical Theatre Pieces. An English/Polish Jazz Fest

Polish vocalist Sylvia Bialas and drummer Asaf Sirkis have toured the world, blending Polish song with an incredible array of jazz idiom. Their quartet is joined by their close friend Tim Garland, Britain’s No.1 reeds player

This will be our first jazz event in any of our festival programmes. We are sure that the combination of the very best of English and Polis jazz performers will prove to be a highlight of our 2015 festival and will be bringing it to a truly enjoyable close
