I chose Telford College to study at because it was easier for me to get to and I had heard some good reviews.

My personal tutor helped me to gain my confi dence and gave me guidance when I most needed it.

Working for a cruise line is something I have always wanted to do so when the Steiner presentation was done at the College it gave me the perfect opportunity to apply.”

I had to go through a thorough interview process which involved presentation, public speaking and practical sessions.

Student Life

Alex was working as a chef and was feeling a lack of job satisfaction. He started to look for alternative employment and came into Telford College. As part of his research for alternative employment he saw a talk on nursing and midwifery.

The talk inspired him to take it further. He enrolled on a nursing and midwifery course, initially wanting to be a nurse, then changed to midwifery in the early stages of the course. This enabled him to complete a four-day placement at the PRH in midwifery suite through College.

The successful end to the course led to university course in Midwifery at Birmingham City University. He plans over the next ten years to become qualified and hopefully to work in Australia.

UCAS Points

Your route to UniversityIf you complete one of our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas, this is a great route to university. Graded at Distinction, Merit or Pass these qualifications are equivalent to two or three A levels.

The UCAS points table shows how a triple Distinction in a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent

to three A grades at A level. Both are worth 360 UCAS points. The entry requirements for a university level course vary by institution and by subject study. Courses are available at all levels from 120 UCAS points (three pass grades on a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma) through to 420. So it really is possible to get to university without doing A levels.

Learners wanting to go to university should do the Extended Diploma at Level 3.

You don’t need A levels to go to University

Daniel’s employer says he applies a professional approach to any task he is asked to undertake and has been congratulated on many occasions for his outstanding work and technical abilities by his System Testing colleagues.

Daniel has taken on sole responsibility and ownership for the design and development of the software systems documentation within the company intranet.

Robyn Edwards – an Advanced Business and Administration Apprentice at Festival DraytonWe placed Robyn in 2012 as an apprentice and Robyn’s personal development and learning journey to date has been outstanding.

She assists the Centre Manager in providing 120+ volunteers with essential support and 137,000+ visitors per annum with a high quality experience.

Geoff Vernon MBE, Chair at Festival Drayton, tells us that she has become an invaluable asset to their business and effectively enhances many areas of their business operations with outstanding results. Her positive attitude is infectious.

Melissa Sayers - an Intermediate Retail Apprentice at Donnington PharmacyMelissa was placed in 2013

Melissa also completed the Pharmacy Counter Assistant qualifi cation which is required within the fi rst 6 months of starting in just 6 weeks! This, coupled with her apprenticeship, has helped Melissa to apply and have the confi dence in her skills to secure a trainee dispenser role at the branch. Melissa’s employer, Nigel Dugmore, says Melissa is a reliable and hardworking member of staff and is an inspiration to all other apprentices.

Dionne Edwards – an Intermediate Hospitality Apprentice at the University of WolverhamptonDionne decided to have a complete change of career from the banking sector to catering. The apprenticeship has helped Dionne to improve her skills and academic studies to succeed in the hospitality sector. She has fully used the University’s training programmes to help support her skills further. Dionne has shown many skills during her apprenticeship including anticipating problems as well as having a great “can do” attitude by fi nding solutions to problems. She has contributed to the development of the fl avoured coffees list in the Coffee shop and has also introduced a fresh smoothies drinks menu which has generated praise through her promotion of healthier drinks options as well as increasing income.

Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport took on their fi rst apprentices in September 2013, with Telford College of Arts and Technology supporting the recruitment and apprenticeship training.

Director, Mark Freeman said “Both girls have been a breath of fresh air for our company and have a “let’s do it” attitude. I think that apprenticeships are a brilliant way for people to get on the job training and earn a living at the same time.”

Before Laura became an apprentice she had completed AS Levels and said “I just wanted to get into work and start earning.”

“I think the main difference between an apprenticeship and College is that you gain more practical experience, I would recommend apprenticeships to anyone who is undecided about their future. You get hands on experience, get paid a wage and study a qualifi cation, maybe even a permanent job.”

“This apprenticeship has been great because it has given me the opportunity to develop my people skills, telephone skills and my confi dence in general. I was so nervous at talking to people on the phone at the beginning but now it has become second nature.”

Lucy had completed A-Levels before she became

an apprentice and decided she didn’t want to go to University, so looked for an apprenticeship saying “I think that I learn better with on the job practical experience. For this reason an apprenticeship was the right path for me. If anyone is unsure about what to do after leaving school, I would defi nitely recommend doing an apprenticeship. I have learnt so much during my time here.”

The girls saw the apprenticeship vacancy on the National Apprenticeship Service website and found the application process easy as they were able to search for vacancies to suit their needs. They said “The apprenticeship team at Telford College were very helpful, offering advice and guidance on the application process. “

Since starting at Henshalls their career prospects are growing. Mark said “I would recommend any company to take on an apprentice; it has been a very positive experience for us. We realised we needed support from the younger generation to help us progress as a company and the girls have grown so much in confi dence during their time here. On a day to day basis, they are mixing with so many talented people who work here, picking up key skills from everyone’s strengths. There are defi nitely opportunities for future development if they wish to pursue their future career here.”

“ I was at a bit of a crossroads. For one reason or another, I left school without any qualifications and had been in a series of dead end jobs leading nowhere. I was determined to change this but didn’t really know how.

I met with a college careers adviser and we had a long chat about my aspirations. I’d always had an interest in computers but had never really considered it as a career option. We discussed the networking course and it sounded really exciting.

If you told me eight months ago that I would be able to install a local area network, maintain a computer system and build in security I would not have believed you.

The support from teachers and other students at the college has been outstanding. It is a course for everyone and it provides openings to careers, higher education and in my case an apprenticeship.”Sammy Mitchell

The course has made a massive difference to my technical skills as I have undertaken different modules that involve the use of programming languages.”Chris Simmons
