Real-life Skills

Coming to College is all about your future career aims. As a Gazelle College our courses are designed to give you the skills and qualifications that employers are looking for, so whatever career path you decide to follow, you can be guaranteed that you will leave College with the essential skills needed out there in the real world of work.

Don’t just take it from us! Here are some of our students who have had that extra bit of support to help them along the way to their chosen careers.

Case StudyJasmine Matthews, who is studying vehicle maintenance and repair, had the opportunity to take part in The Institution of Engineering and Technology Formula Goblin Project, which aims to inspire young people aged nine to 11 into engineering by using basic mechanic skills to build a fully functional car.

“I really enjoyed taking part in this project. I found it really interesting putting what I have learnt in the classroom into practice and it felt really good passing my knowledge and experience on. It was really fun helping the children, they really enjoyed it and it was nice to see them so excited!”

Case StudyA Level student, Jamie Stewart, was appointed as a work experience student as part of the local Chamber’s commitment to the 1000 Club - a local scheme designed to support the city’s young people.

“As well as doing the small admin jobs, I was given opportunities to go along to networking events which gave me a good idea of what types of businesses the Chamber can benefit. All in all it has been a positive experience and has led to me applying for a paid Apprenticeship with the Chamber.”

“I joined the painting and decorating course at the College as I really enjoyed art at school but wanted to try something a bit different. After the course I managed to get an Apprenticeship with the National Trust, during which I have had a lot of great experiences, including working in France and taking part in a BBC project.

“My Apprenticeship training is still with the College and they have entered me for three regional competitions. I came third in ‘Skillbuild 2012’ and first in ‘Skillbuild 2013’ and the South West heat of the ‘Dulux Decorator Centres’ 2013 Apprentice of the Year competition. I’m now going on to the national Skillbuild final for 2013 - watch this space!

“My time at the College has been very enjoyable and rewarding - the staff are helpful, supportive and they make sure that I get the most out of the course - pushing my aspirations.”

Case Study Public Services

“My passion and desire to pursue a career in the Royal Navy started when I was very young. My dad would return home, after being away with the Navy for months at a time. When home, he would tell me stories of exotic places he had been, people he had met, combat situations he had been in and the medals he had been awarded. This all sparked my desire to have a successful career within the Royal Navy.

“I enrolled on a two year BTEC Diploma in Public Services at the College and progressed to the foundation degree. The foundation degree has been one of the best experiences of my life! Over the past two years, it has taught me to see both sides of an argument. I have a new found confidence and I have gained knowledge and skills for employment in the delivery, management and evaluation of public services.

“I will graduate this summer, and will join HMS Raleigh as an able seaman to begin my career in the Royal Navy, where I hope to use all the knowledge and skills I have learnt over the past four years at the College.”

Case Study Travel and Tourism

“I applied to do a travel and tourism course at the College as I had a personal interest in the travel industry and the location of the College was really convenient for me.

“The College was quite big, but all of the staff were friendly and treated students like adults in comparison to being at school. After the course I decided to go on to a Foundation Degree in Hospitality at the College, which I then topped up to an honours degree.

“I am currently working at Wembley Stadium arranging events and I also work in live music production, which I hope to pursue a career in.”
